Fat Acceptance...

This is like me saying to a fat person - you must eat two gallons of ice cream a day. That would be just as rude as your grain of rice comment.

Fat PEOPLE are not disgusting and I would never make a comment about anyones weight - it is none of my business.

But fat in our society is not attractive.

IMO it is your business when it impacts your comfort and personal space.

I have traveled in a situation where I was in a middle seat with a very large person on either side. Bottom line, no arm rests for me, and being squeezed from either side not to mention legs spilling over into what was supposed to be my leg room.
Fair? I don't think so.....

To top it off I have DVT & PEs so I have to get up and stretch often on flights and the one person that had the aisle was so annoyed that I had to get up because it was such an effort for them to get in and out of the seats.

Hello! Get 2 seats!

Everyone has a choice. I just think the hard work is overwhelming to some people.

One of my SILs comes to mind. She always comments to me, "you loose weight so easily, or you are able to keep your weight off". Does she really think its easy? I can go to the gym everyday for two weeks and lose a half a pound. Sure its frustrating but I still go. Her kids would starve at our house. I have no chips, no snack cakes, no cookies, no crackers, no potatoes, brownies, etc. Her DD is not overweight, but every time she gains a pound, she nags her. Her 11 year old DS is definitely overweight but she doesn't limit what he eats by just not buying junk.

Just a thought about the people being overweight hurthing others point.

Say that there is a mother who has teenage kids. And the mother takes all her stress about being a single mother on eating. She than becomes overweight and dies. All this happens within a year and the teenage kids have to live through/watch their mother eating so much that she ends up dieing. The teenagers than become depressed.

Is that not affecting the teenagers health or...??????

again this is just a thought no flames please :goodvibes

Some have already established that obesity doesn't contribute to any early death.

You're absolutely right -- it will affect the children, as would (substitute any of the following): alcohol, drugs, smoking, undiagnosed or non-medicated depression, medical conditions for which the mom is not seeing a doctor because she can't afford the visits, abusive relationships w/husbands/boyfriends, anorexia, bullemia, etc., etc.) Everything that anyone does in the world affects others, why should overweight people be singled out? How far into someone else's life are you willing to intrude before you've gone too far? No flames, just wondering where it stops.

I gather this was after you lost those 3 dress sizes?

I have a few questions, because I honestly don't know the answers, since I travel very infrequently. My TA never mentioned about having to buy a second seat. When would that be decided? At the airport by the carrier personnel? What if there weren't an extra seat available? Also, if I had to purchase two seats, would that entitle me to two carryons, and 2 suitcases?

Well in your estimation, shouldn't you have paid for an aisle seat since your DVT & PEs have now impacted someone else's comfort and personal space? You don't think that's annoying for other passengers, whether heavy or not, to have to continually get up and move so you can stretch? Funny how you didn't acknowledge how this might make someone else uncomfortable.

I'm sorry that it makes you sad to see your mom overweight and unhealthy. But your argument still does not make the comparison between smoking and being overweight a valid one. Your mom's weight might make you sad, and it may be difficult for you to see her that way. But ultimately, it's only HER health that she is affecting. Not yours. Her weight has no physical affect on you or your health. If she were a smoker on the other hand, blowing smoke in your face, then she WOULD be placing your health at risk. Still no comparison.

that was the point i was trying to make, and i dont think overweight individuals should be singled out

That's a good question, when is that decided? Do they eyeball you at the gate, or do the flight attendants come through the plane to look? And if that is the case and they decide you need a second seat, how is that handled? They can't even give you change if you get one of those stupid snack boxes, how do they process a credit card for another seat? What if you don't have the money, do they just leave you there? That seems like a very hard rule to enforce. Maybe they scope people out in the waiting area.

My BIL is a big man, about 6'2" and at least 340 pounds. Doesn't really look bigger in any one area but just a big guy if you understand what I'm saying. We were boarding a flight on United a couple years ago and they called him over to the check-in area and told him he needed to buy another seat. On our return flight they never said a word. We decided they must of needed a few extra bucks to fuel up the plane on the first leg:rotfl: Both flights were about 3/4 full by the way.

In truth he really couldn't fit in a single seat without moving the armrest so I guess they were just looking out for the guy sitting next to him (me) and at 6' 190 I fill up those seats pretty well on my own.

Wow, snappy comeback. Care to show me where in any of my post on this subject I said this, 'cause I've gone back and looked through the entire thread twice and I don't see it anywhere. How about having a discussion about what's in my posts and not acting so childish. :rolleyes1

Actually, no.
Nobody thought I needed to loose the weight. I felt being almost middle age it was time to really become slim because it is so much easier on your joints, has allowed me more movement in dance & pilates class and lowers your risk for so many diseases.

Will I ever be a size 2 again...most likely no but being close makes me feel really great!

I would happily pay for that aisle seat.
The person was annoyed because I did have to get up once every hour as many do whether it's for blood clots or use of the restroom.
They clearly had a very tough time with ambulation, that is a weight issue and something you allow to happen to your physical being.
Something I will never understand or allow to happen to my body.

You have GOT to be kidding me. So you knew this person and knew that his weight caused his mobility and not the other way around?

I hope you never have to find out the things that *could* happen to your body whether you allow it or not. You might be in for a reality you're not ready for.

Kidding about what?

And you knew this just by looking at him? Poor ambulation couldn't possibly have been caused by a bad back, bad knees, arthritis or any number of other issues? Perhaps he was fat because he was taking prednisone for something, or bloated from chemo? In my case it was laziness that got me the body that I have, but I don't assume that everyone is large because they're lazy. Just like I don't look down my nose at those who smoke, because I managed to kick a 2 pack a day habit 15 years ago. I try to empathize and give support and assistance WHEN IT'S ASKED FOR. I'm sure you wouldn't understand or allow that to happen to you, even though you felt the need, for whatever reason, to drop 3 dress sizes? (Which, BTW is a wonderful accomplishment and you should be applauded for that, but it just seems a little hypocritical to say you'd never allow that to happen, when it obviously did.)
