Fastpass vs Fastpass+

We've only visited once before, in 2011, with the old Fastpass system. It seemed to be working really well. We were quite happy with it.

What are the benefits to the Fastpass+? Why did they do away with the old system?

I read through the first thread. It didn't exactly answer my question. So I'm clarifying my question:

I think I meant What are the benefits to Disney? Why did they do away with the old system? Was it being abused like the DAS passes? Or was it something else?
