fastpass planning tips please

So I am a compulsive planner (when it comes to fun stuff) usually i have an extensive plan of action for each park but being that we are going at a busy time of year I would like to try to use the fastpasses. I am having a hard time planning to where we wont be walking back and forth (even if just i go get the fastpasses). Any tips from people have used the fastpasses would be wonderful. Thanks
