Fast pass option question

Forgive me if this is either the wrong area or answered elsewhere, but hopefully someone can shed some light.
So I am brand new to scheduling fast pass on the Disney website for my upcoming trip.

For Epcot, they list Illuminations: Reflections in Light as an option to fastpass.

So my question is this, is this event now a reservation only event? In the past, each time we have gone, we just walked up, found a spot and enjoyed.
If it isn't a reservation thing, is it worthwhile to fastpass it? Like maybe a prime viewing spot?

Any help in getting me to understand this would truly be appreciated it!

60 days out! Just checked in for All Star Music!! :)

In my opinion, it is not a worthwhile FP.

The FastPass gives you a view from a reserved prime location - in between the two big gift shops in the World Showcase. We used it last trip just to give it a try - it was a good view. (we had viewed it from there on a previous trip without FastPass)
You can still stake out any spot you like- no FastPass necessary.

With an Illuminations FP, you will not be able to get any additional fastpasses at the kiosks during the day. You have to use all 3 first or let the times pass.

I appreciate all the replies and excellent information!
Mesaboy, outstanding thread!
