We are just back from a week on the Fantasy. This was our 9th Disney cruise (1 Wonder, 5 Magic, 2 Dream and 1 Fantasy). Overall we had a great time. We are at Disney's Vero Beach Resort now, but I wanted to share info for those cruising soon.

Pre-paid Tips – On Day 5 we received a letter in our room with our completed tip tickets (the standard pre-charged) and envelopes. If you are planning to change your tips in any way, know that your stateroom host will see the amount you are leaving them on this day when they deliver the letter and actual tickets and envelopes. The tickets were stapled to the letter. Because we did some room shuffling, I had to go to Guest Services to change amounts. I was asked if all the service so far had been excellent. Just so you know.

Weather – this was the worst weather of any cruise I have done (and 5 of our cruises were done during active hurricanes!). We had some sunshine on our sea days and a little on Costa Maya (between showers). Not a great cruise for lots of fabulous sunshine. It was mostly overcast. There were plenty of inside activities however, so no lack of things to do!

The unusual – On our 1st sea day we stopped to pick up some people stranded at sea on a raft. Rumor was they were from Cuba and had been out at sea for 3 days. There were a lot of cheers as they were rescued. They were dropped off in Grand Cayman. On Day 5, we lost power for about 15 minutes in the late afternoon. No reason was given, but they were obviously working on the ship that day; there was a lot of banging going on at Port. On Day 6, we again stopped after viewing a raft, but there was no one on the raft or located in the surrounding water. They stated the raft had been reported to the Coast Guard.

The Food – Palo was very good. We had great service from Michael. The dining room food was mostly good. Probably having Palo later in the cruise would be good (then you wouldn’t have that to compare to the regular dining). The best dinner I had in the dining room was the Captain’s Gala dinner on semi-formal night. Cabanas food was good with several choices.

The rooms – we had two, one an 8 (forward-7012) with porthole and one a 6 (aft-7682) with verandah. I used my verandah a lot this trip since there was no sunshine on the upper decks. The porthole room seemed large as it had a Murphy bed and the regular verandah area was “inside” the room. This room also has a rainfall shower head and slightly different configuration, not really a bathtub. Overall the location forward is great if you are an adult and want quick access to the adult areas. The aft location was convenient to Cabanas. However, the room we had was very far aft and was loud with engine noise and constant vibration (sometimes much worse than others). We can sleep almost anywhere, so it was no issue to us, but others would perhaps have a problem with the vibration. We had an aft room on the Dream (10142) and while we felt and heard noise arriving and leaving ports, we never had these vibrations.

Service - Our stateroom hostess was not so great. She kept her cart parked at our door and was always in our face when we were coming in or leaving our room, which we didn’t like. She was trying to be friendly. She would open our door just before we got to the room and would “help” bring in FE gifts. I know it was her way of providing great service, but it was just a little too helpful for me.

The people from room service were great. Very fast and efficient!

We requested our dining wait and he was very friendly and efficient. His assistant is new and it showed. I am sure he will improve with time. Around the ship everyone was friendly and very helpful.

Activities – we didn’t participate in many onboard activities, so I have no idea how those were overall. The ones we did attend were great. We did have issues the first couple of days in that so many things we wanted to do overlapped. We missed two big things, DVC member celebration (ran over the allotted time and so I missed the giveaways and drawings) and Castaway Club reception due to brunch. If these particular events are important to you, be sure to schedule brunch later in the week.

Teen Clubs – Vibe has a smaller group this cruise it seems. They were off track from the schedule a couple of days, which really frustrated my son, but seemed to get back on track by Day 4. He went to the club on a regular basis, but didn’t spend as much time in there as my dd did in the past (he is 14).

Club 18*21 was much more active on this cruise. They met the first night and had a group of about 20. There were actual activities on the Navigator for them each day. They also met every evening and Mattie (the CM) was sure to stop and chat with our girls (both 18) every time he saw them. So for those who have commented, I would say you ARE being heard! It seems about ½ the group is showing up for the activities outside of the evening stuff. My dd thought this was her best cruise ever and she ALWAYS loves the cruises.

AquaDuck – If you want photos, they are only taken on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. It is not as daunting as it seems – everyone should try it once!

Ports – From my personal opinion:
Grand Cayman – go on an excursion, to the beach or stay on the ship. There was free wi-fi advertised in a couple of restaurants.

Costa Maya – Prices for most things will be cheaper in Cozumel. The dolphin excursion here was one of the cheaper ones, but yet very good. Plus observers can watch here for free! I will post some pics in another thread. We have taken the taxi to the local beach in the past and have enjoyed that (both on hurricane cruises when this wasn’t a planned port).

Cozumel – some cheap shopping if you need little souvenirs. I hate the constant approaches and haggling though, so again here – go an excursion if you don’t want to shop or haggle.

Castaway Cay - the island was beautiful as always, though we didn’t have a single bit of sun all day. We saw a small stingray at Serenity Bay before the winds ran us off. I also saw the cat (some call him Casey) on our way off the island.

The Fantasy vs. the Dream – I love the changes they have made. They have definitely improved the adult area with the addition of Satellite Falls. The AquaLab looked like so much fun, but the few times I was that way, there was no one playing in there. The more centrally located drink stations make sense and seemed to work well. They have converted part of the art gallery (where the auctions were on the Dream) to be viewing stations for Shutters, that does seem to help traffic congestion in that area. The adult district seems more inviting overall. We were also told that some crew areas were also improved from the Dream to the Fantasy and those who had been on both seemed to really like the changes.

It was a fabulous cruise and we can’t wait to go back! Feel free to ask any questions. I will post some pics in this thread later too.

Thank you so much for posting such a detailed list. :thumbsup2 We'll be on the Western this summer - tonight is my 75 day mark and I was wondering which day would be better for Palo brunch. You've convinced me to try for our second sea day. And last night we were wondering how the shopping would be in Cozumel. Perfect post at the perfect time for me! :flower3:

The cubans didn't get off the ship like was told to everyone by Ray at the show that night. They went to hand them off to the authorities but these 4 persons had been picked up before a couple times and taken to authorities in GC and they wouldn't take them anymore so the 4 persons stayed on with us for the rest of the cruise and were taken into custody in PC yesterday by US coast guard

The Magic's cruise that returned to NYC yesterday stopped to inspect a large black raft that was adrift. the ship passed it and an announcement was made that they did not get a good look at it so they were turning around to take a closer look. the ship stopped and it was a large black, foruntately empty raft. The ship brought the raft onboard so no other ships would have to do the same thing.

Here is a pic of the raft that was picked up....

Thanks for the report!! Why did you switch rooms and how?? :)

I'm very curious as to how you handled the FE issue? I would NOT be happy with someone else getting our gifts out for us! I would put us stop to it right away?
Also, if this is too personal a question please just say so, but I'm also curious how much you tipped for your room attendant? I have always wondered how you figure that out if ur not happy?

Thanks for that update - very interesting. I think this whole thing is sad in so many ways. I won't start a debate, but I can see this becoming more and more of an issue for the cruise lines.

I am sorry for the confusion. We had two staterooms the whole cruise, one I stayed in with dh, one my kiddos were in.

I'm very curious as to how you handled the FE issue? I would NOT be happy with someone else getting our gifts out for us! I would put us stop to it right away?

The FE thing was difficult, because she grabbed them and mixed them, so we didn't know who the gifts were designated for. I just started going to the door and checking every so often and pulling them out as soon as I could without leaving the room. However, if we were walking down the hall, she stepped up and grabbed gifts and opened our door every single time, even when my card was in my hands. I didn't even complain to her about our room issues until Day 4, so I never mentioned the FE thing, I just dealt with it. I knew her intention was to be very helpful. However, if I had her again, I think I would have just let her know everyone likes to get their own gifts out, so she could just leave them in there. We left her the standard tip, though we typically leave 50-100% more (they have the most difficult job of those who serve us, in my opinion). I hate that this sounds so negative, but really it was a minor irritation, and I realize that she is newer employee and needs time. This was only the 9th official cruise and they are doing very well I think. Your stateroom host does have a lot of influence on how you feel about your cruise, so despite how I reacted, I would just try to be up front with your expectations, and I know they will do what they can to accommodate you. I know they would rather make you happy!

Since she obviously thought she was doing you a favor by bringing in the FE gifts and mistakenly might have thought her actions would bring her an even better tip, you should have spoken to her about it the very first time it happened. Many guests have particular preferences and room hosts are sometimes clueless. Their aim is to please you because it hopefully benefits them, but they are not mind readers. I am glad to hear you would promptly correct such issues in the future, for the sake of your family and of the room host. :)

We were on 4th paid sailung of the Fantasy (our 23rd DCL) We were in 7681 and had Brenda our stateroom host-
Worst stateroom host ever as we "fired"her on our 1st nite and she was replaced by Tyrone who did an excellent job!
Brenda was replaced for us because of numerous cleaning issues and service!

Wow. What happened there? You already had "numerous cleaning issues and service" by the very first night?

Stateroom not clean when 1st entering dust, dirt, crumbs on floor surounding desk/bed. The room should have been free of built up dust as it is a new ship. Brenda came in to re-vacume and dust/dirt still there. Her vacume (Dyson) canister was overflowing with carpet pillage.
Came back from 2nd seating dinning- room was not turned down , no Navigater, dirty bath towels in bathtub,no ice as requested, no towel animal(although not a given on 1st nite), and---dust.
She met us at our door that nite handed us the Navigater looked in our room, looked in our dirty bathroom and said everything looked great and left!

Needless to say we were on the phone to get a deck housekeeping room superviser.
Brenda was never to be found in our hallway within a hallway part of the ship!

Yipe. That's impressive.

o.k., you got me freaking out right now. we cruise in 3 weeks. WE ALSO HAVE ROOM 7682! Your review of the room seems less than stellar. I knew when booking that there was the chance, being aft, of engine noise. The engine vibrations probably won't be a big deal for us, but the stateroom host has me concerned. Good to know we can request someone different, it would be a last resort but will do it if we have to. Do you know if it was Brenda that you had?
Thanks for the reviews of the ports. We were thinking of doing the island tour at Grand Cayman. Should we pre-book or are there options for finding something on our own?

I wouldnt be to concerned they do move stateroom hosts around the ship but Brenda was "one of a kind" and not good at that even.

We are not picky people but do tend to keep our vacaction surroundings neat and tidy not to over tax our stateroom host. But really as tidy we are all they need to do is vacume and wipe down the bath and replentish towels.
We've seen a lot of "Trashed" rooms walking the decks.
We have cruised loonnngg enough too know the standards of DCL. The rest of the Fantasy seemed "polished" enough even the 4th paid sailing to stand up to the DCL heritage that it is.
We often remarked during our cruise that the Fantasy was a "new and improved" larger version of the Disney Magic!- (16 of our sailings are on our "home" ship).

Wondering time of Castaway Cay Gold/Plat member reception? :)

Sunday at 11am. We were on this same cruise. :)

our stateroom attendant Onin was great. we were in 8060/8061. We too had a fabulous time. The only complaint we had was they changed the crepes on Pirate night.. now are lemon flavored....and the kids club misplaced on our son. ( he was there the whole time, they had him as being checked out.)

Yikes Scott! I really wish we had done the same. I will say she has obviously improved, but there are still issues. Anyone going and staying in this room, please do not be like me, please correct it on the front end - you will have a much happier cruise as a result.

It was at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.

Definitely give her a chance. Just let her know right away if you have any concerns/issues. I talked to her and then talked to guest services also. The only way things are going to improve for everyone is to let the person know and also guest services if the results are not satisfactory.

The room doesn't get a lot of foot traffic and has a fabulous view at CC, so just relax and enjoy!

I know many people do independent tours in Grand Cayman, but honestly, I am not familiar enough to recommend anything specific. I am sure someone will jump in and help though!

Sorry, it took some time to upload the pics. Here we go!
