The day started pretty much the same as any other Thursday - my alarm went off at 6:15 and I lay in bed listening to the radio for a while - but there was something special about this particular Thursday, it was the day that we were going on holiday! :cool1:

I got up just after 7:30 and after a wash and shave I finished off the last bits of my packing and sat browsing the Internet for a while. There was one other job I had to do and that was to go up to the Post Office to send off an item that I had sold on EBay on Tuesday night. I went out to the Post Office about 9:00 and as it was virtually deserted I was back home soon after. Other than fielding a few phone calls from work - they managed to last a whole 2 hours without me :sad2: - there was nothing left to do but wait until it was time to do online check in. At 11:25 online check in opened and I got us checked in but I was disappointed that I couldn't change our seats, which were in the row of 4 in the middle of the plane - they were the only ones available when we decided to pay to reserve but at least we hadn't ended up in the middle 2 seats of the row of 4.

Bang on 2:00 the taxi driver telephoned to let us know he was outside, albeit he was outside the wrong house, but we soon put that right and we were on our way. It was one of those journeys where the traffic lights turn from green to amber when you are just a few feet too far away to get through before they turn red but despite that we made good progress as the traffic was quite light and we arrived at Gatwick just before 3:00.

We found our way to the Hilton, which doesn't seem to be quite as convenient for the terminals as the Sofitel, but we were soon checked in and in room 1271 on the ground floor, which was handy.

It was too early for us to go over to the North Terminal and drop our bags so there was only one thing to do - go to the bar and have a drink. I had a half of shandy, Dad had a pint of shandy and we sat toasting the start of our holiday.

By the time we had finished our drinks it was just after 4:00 so we went back to the room to collect our suitcases and made our way over to the North Terminal where we used one of the kiosks to print off our boarding passes and luggage labels and then dropped our cases at the bag drop desk.

We had a quick walk around the terminal and then went back over to the South Terminal where we went into the Wetherspoons pub. We had a coke each then Dad had beef and ale pie and I had a BBQ chicken melt which we sat and ate at a table by the window overlooking the arrivals area.

After eating it was back to the room to relax for a couple of hours before going back to the bar for a nightcap.

We went back to the bar where I had a pint of shandy and Dad had a pint of cider, then (party animals that we are) we were in bed by 9:30 ready for a day of travelling tomorrow.

Day 2

I don't believe it - somebody left the seat of your toilet up ;)

Great start David - hope you and 'Dad' had a lovely time. It was all I could think about that Thursday morning - I'm sure you would have died of shock if I'd turned up on your doorstep to hold you to our agreement :rotfl2:

Cannot wait to read all about the Fantasy as we are just about to transfer our Panama Canal cruise to a Western Caribbean on the Fantasy.

:rotfl: I certainly would. We did spare a thought for you when the taxi arrived and I decided that as you stood me up Dad would have to come along after all. ;)

 I was going to shout "Not fair" but I'm pretty sure Dad was in there before I started taking photos so it probably was us and not the cleaner! ;)

I stayed in that Hilton couple of times when I was having an overnight stop in London/Gatwick. It's a nice place to relax after a long flight and get ready for next-day's trip ;)

I don't think I have seen the rooms there before looks good... too funny about the toilet seat!
