I didn't get a chance to explore this while I was there last week, but as we were being ushered past the RBT during F!, I saw people sitting outside (presumably eating... I didn't stop to look) and I wondered if this was a viable option to watch F! from that location?

It depends on where you were looking. The tables closest to the PotC entrance (to the right of the entrance as you approach) are reserved for the RBT restaurant (it's a table service location in the afternoon/evening and serves the F! dining packages). The tables to the left (at least the ones closest to the Stage Door Cafe) are available on a first-come-first-serve basis, so if you're lucky enough to snag one of those, you can view F! from them. They're an off-center view with some obstructions (they do not take the umbrellas down), but it's nice to be able to sit down and have a snack while watching F!.

Thanks, figment... I was coming from Adventureland, and so the tables I am thinking of were closest to POTC. But we COULD have dinner at RBT and eat outside, then? There were lots of empty tables in that area. I shall have to check out their menu and see if that might be worth it. I'd rather sit in a chair than on the ground!

You can find the menu here. http://allears.net/dlr/din/menu/men_rbf.htm It is $41.99 per adult.

Yes, it is my understanding that guests that have reservations that overlap with the show can watch from their table. However, it is worth noting that RBT only has the F! Dining Packages (no a la carte options) and generally are fully booked, so reservations are highly recommended.

My question would be, why would you want to get dinner at RBT to watch Fantasmic from there, when you could be sitting front and center to the main show with the special pass you get for eating dinner at RBT? I suppose you could see Fantasmic twice in one night this way: watch the early show while you eat dinner from the restaurant and then use the pass for the central viewing area to watch the second.
