Fantasmic theme...yikes

I guess I must be lost...how does "the Earth is millions of years old" and evolution equate to evil? :confused3

Some fundamentalist christians believe that the earth is only about 20,000 years old b/c that is all the time actually accounted for in the bible. They alos belive that evolution is contrary to the bible. As a scientist that just happens to also be a Christian I disagee. The passage that says that a thousand years is but the blink of an eye to God tells me that creation did not happen is Seven of our days.

:rotfl: :rotfl: true true...that's so funny...I mean I realize there was an evil witch of course in Snow White and lots of the princess movies... but good always wins. But in Fantasmic, Mickey himself was indulging in the evil...big difference. Disney appears to be glorifying it. And poor Bambi...I just watched that a few weeks ago. At least the "father" steps up to the plate and it turns out alright. In any case, I just feel like Fantasmic is completely out of line with the typical Disney movie theme. And now stepping back, isn't the Sorceror Hat the theme of HS? :scared1: I don't know, maybe I am just different from the mainstream...I really try to avoid evil and all that.

I don't see it as indulging in evil at all. I see it as teaching a valuble lesson about the pitfalls of temptation and abuse of power.

I agree!

I wouldn't try and read too much into it. Hopefully it isn't the whole "magic" thing causing you concern, because Disney World is full of magic!:wizard:
Oh no there is fun make believe magic ....and then there is evil satanic kind of magic... I love the former!!!! :goodvibes I was just making sure that was all it was!

I guess I must be lost...how does "the Earth is millions of years old" and evolution equate to evil? :confused3
OH sorry, I didn't mean that evolution was evil exactly....I dont believe in evolution and old earth stuff...so to me it was disturbing to see after the whole sorcerer scene in Fantasia.

*********************************************************

As an aside, I am so glad to hear that Fantasia and Fantasmic aren't exactly related. So, continue on folks....I am just learning all of the details here.

Crisi do you have any good Disney history or trivia books or websites you recommend??? Thanks! :goodvibes

Hmm.. I don't have any problems with darker themes in Disney movies. As another posted stated, Grimms Fairytales are well, grim at times. And a Chrsitian science teacher, I have no problems with evolution as means for God creating our wolrd.

What I am bothered by is princess movies. In the end, the princess can never be "complete" or happy without her prince charming. Blah. My little girl won't need a man to make her a strong queen, and she won't need a man for a happy ever after. Maybe it's the feminist in me.

BTW, my toddler loves Fantasia 2000. I like it better too! Very cute stuff.

The movie is "Fantasia" and the show at DHS is "Fantasmic" and they are not the same.

Walt's mother died due to a faulty heater in the house that he bought his parents as a gift once he made lots of money. People have theorized that his movies have loss (usually of the mother) because he never got over his own mother's death.

The Earth IS billions of years old, so I'm not sure why you find that disturbing.

I've seen the film many times, and Mickey never turns evil in my copy. He breaks the rules and puts on the hat to use magic to clean up, which gets out of hand. Since magic hats, walking brooms, etc. aren't real, I'm not sure how you get evil out of that. It does teach kids the lesson that if they don't do what their parents/teachers tell them, things might go wrong and get them into trouble.

If you really didn't like the movie, though, you might not like the conflict of good vs evil in "Fantasmic".

OP Fantasmic! is truly a not-to-be-missed show. Mickey Mouse basically has a dream, and in his dream the good, and the villains, come out in a projection of lasers bounced off water (really cool and has to be seen to be believed). The special effects are amazing. And of course the end is happy (I don't want to actually give it away if you have never seen it.) Just know that it is NOT Fantasia. Watch it on You tube to determine if it will work for your kids. It was DGS's (4 at the time) and DGD's (2 1/2 at the time) favorite night time show. They wanted to see it again.

Ok I feel kinda "lost" (for lack of better/more colorful words). I NEVER realized the connection between Fantasmic and Fantasia! DUH!!!

I'm glad you said that. It makes me feel less stupid because I didn't realize it either.

As a classical music buff, I love Fantasia, and so does DS --that's due probably more to the fact that he's always heard those pieces at home, though. I will say that while I watch it on occasion, DS is always choosing that for movie night. As a Christian, I am not bothered at all by themes of evolution in the film.

:smickey:Fantasmic! is my can't-miss show. I absolutely adore it. The CD is in my car right now --Don't judge me! I need my pixie dust, LOL!pixiedust: . My family used to laugh at me for my devotion to seeing it, but they'll actually remind me about getting to MGM in time. As if I needed reminding...

OT...one of my most memorable times was walking up the small path to the left of the castle, towards fantasy land. Cinderella music playing, dd, 7 at the time, says, "Yeah yeah, get over it already, go to college, get a job and take care of yourself. But then we are in faaaannnntttaassy land, eyes rolling." And I look over to this little toddler twirling in a cindy dress and her mom (I guess, or aunt, or stepmom...) was just :scared1: . The little girl had no idea what dd was saying, so I don't feel bad, she just kept on twirling and smiling, but it was a good jump point for a conversation on being aware of little ears and what you do can influence a child.

Back to Fantasia, I agree that I think it was just showing that there is evil, not really glorifying it. And Mickey was just having fun with it, not using the magic for evil, actually I think he was just feeling lazy that day and wanted someone else to do the chores :rotfl:

ITA! By the way, you may like "The Paper Bag Princess" by Robert Munsch. I love reading it to my DD as well as all the children I take care of.

As far as Fantasmic, my daughter just didn't like it, because she was afraid of Maleficent and all the bad guys. She's more of a good guy type of girl. :)

Geishagirl:you should listen to Sara Barielles' song "Fairy Tale" I think you may enjoy it!

I always have a problem with what exactly a princess does all day....hahahaha....besides getting dressed in pretty clothes...:rotfl:

I am a whole hearted believer in micro-evolution!!! :teacher:

Oh my goodness....poor Walt....how tragic about his mother! I would imagine that had an influence on his movies too.

I will definately have to go back and rewatch the movie. I was watching and sewing at the same time and it just seemed so crazy...perhaps I didn't give it a thorough watching. I would say that the lesson is a valuable one though!

Yes, I will have to check out utube....Kristina mentioned that too! I don't doubt that the show is amazing...I have heard good things about it too!

I'm glad you said that. It makes me feel less stupid because I didn't realize it either.
Well, aparently, there is not much of a connection...I just assumed there was actually.

Awwww, your DD is cute! I agree it is very important to teach little ones that they will need to be self-sufficient when they are adults...something I think may be lacking in our current society!

Oh thanks, I am always on the search for good books. I will try to find it tomorrow at the library!

cute, thanks!

I just thought Disney was all cuteness and charm and princesses and goodness.

Can't help but suggest that you watch the movies again. And then read the fairy tales the old ones are based on, to find out how much he lightened up those very dark stories!

I have a friend who always like to say that Walt must have really hated his mom because many of the movies have the moms die and the kids are raised alone, with dad or an evil step mom.

Fairy tales.

Also, as a person approaching 9 years without her mom, losing a parent sends even an adult (I was 30 when she died) on a journey of self-discovery that is like nothing else. I can absolutely, totally understand why so many stories start off with parent death or separation from parents (Dumbo...and Madagascar 2 even though it isn't Disney, but we just watched it today), because the story that follows is very very different from the story that would have been if everyone had been a happy nuclear family.

In fact, when Disneyland first opened, he didn't even allow blatant Satanists into the park.

So...just how many blatant satanists WERE there in the mid-50s, trying to get into Disneyland? :confused3 There aren't even many nowadays...and I know many people who are Wicca (no belief in satan = not satanists) and pagan...so you'd think with all the alternatively religious people I've known I'd know ONE satanist, but I don't...not sure they are all that many.

I guess I must be lost...how does "the Earth is millions of years old" and evolution equate to evil? :confused3

My stepdad would think so. Any, ANY, "magic" is evil to him, and one is not allowed to talk "evolution" in his home. He won't even read Harry Potter to SEE if it's OK for his grandkids...seems that even "alohamora", a made up "spell" to open a door is just too evil for him...:confused3 All very confusing since HP is an incredibly moral series (to be open, I haven't finished the last book yet so maybe it takes an awful unforseen turn), but stepdad's the example of it in my life.

LOL, when you said that you looked at the Fantasmic movie, the first thing that came to my mind was that you might have rented Fantasm -- THAT would have been a surprise, all right. (Fantasm is a sex comedy -- soft-core porn. It has absolutely no connection to Disney.)

As to Fantasia, the only connection is to the Sorceror's Apprentice piece, insofar as Mickey is dressed as his "Sorceror Mickey" character during the show, and if memory serves, the marching broomsticks do make a brief cartoon appearance on the water projection.

If you want to avoid the attraction that is most closely based on Fantasia, you need to be wary in a different park entirely: Epcot. The dinosaurs in the Universe of Energy ride *are* the dinosaurs from Fantasia.
