Party of five: me (30), DW (29), DD (3), mom (68), dad (68) - our planned visit (no hopping) to MGM is Jan 4, 2007 - all Fantasmic Packages are fully booked.

Wondering how bad is the wait for Fantasmic (without Fantasmic Dinner Package)? Would you suggest us to take DD3 for Fantasmic? Would she be scared?

There are two sessions: 6pm & 8pm...which would be less crowded?

I would take your DD who is 3. its not that bad. And she can see all ther princesses. They are both very crowded shows. they tell you to get there 30 mins before the show. Which is good, and you want to set with all your family. I would go at 6 IMO, because then you could go and see the obsorne lights (if you are going at christmas time) without the overwhelming crowd. Have fun. :)

The line will get started 90 minutes before and the show will be mostly packed by 30 minutes prior. Get there early, early, early.

The line could be very very long (waits up to 2 hours at busy times). I'd line up an hour in advance (but these will only get you ok seats). Take your child. Only a few kids get scared during some parts. If there are 2 shows scheduled, see the later one if you think your child can stay up that late. You can show up about 40 minutes in advance. Crowds are much smaller. If its an EMH evening, be prepared for long waits for the 2nd show too.

We always get dinner at the Sunset market(pizza and burger type stuff) then we carry it in and eat while we are waiting in our seats. It helps to pass the time, we try to walk in the arena right at 60 min. prior to the show, we have always been very happy with our seats. We usually go in October, I assume the Christmas crowds would be gone by Jan. 4, so 1 hr. would give you plenty of time.

I totally agree.
The previous posters may not have taken into account the date you are going (which is past the "prime" holiday time by a few days).

No one can predict EXACTLY how large the crowds will be or how early you should go to find a seat for Fantasmic! on any given day.
It has totally to do with the whim of the crowd at MGM on that day, and the general crowd LEVELS.
How much time you wish to "invest" in waiting is a personal decision. We never do the formal Dinner Package, and have always seen the show (dozens of times).

(Take all of these as "average" numbers, sometimes the crowd will be MUCH greater and the theater can fill up much sooner.)

VERY Busy days:
If you go to the first show of the evening (or "only" show that evening), if you arrive about 75-120 minutes before show-time, you can sit just about anywhere.
45-60 minutes before: Good seats
20-40 Minutes: will vary between seats at edges and rear of theater to SRO or even "closed" to further guests.

Busy days:
If you go to the first show of the evening (or "only" show that evening), if you arrive about 50-60 minutes before show-time, you can sit just about anywhere.
40 minutes before: Good seats
25-35 Minutes: will vary between seats at edges and rear of theater to SRO or even "closed" to further guests. (The crowd of "last-minute" arrivals can be slow to get seated before show-time.)

Off-Season (not busy days):
You should be OK to enter by 10-20 minutes before, but you'll likely be seated to the outer edges, and/or way at the back.

If you do the Fantasmic! Dinner Pkg. you still SHOULD enter by AT LEAST 35 minutes (much "safer" at 45 minutes) before show-time and still be guaranteed "pretty good" seats (not my "first choice" area, but fine), regardless of crowd-levels. Remember, the DP is only valid for the first show of the evening, if there are 2 or more. If you do have DP and you spy some seats outside the DP "reserved" area, you are free to choose to sit anywhere outside that area you like, no problem.

If there are TWO Fantasmic! shows in one evening, the second one will have lower crowd level than the first one. You can arrive a bit later and still find a seat.

Be aware that the second show waiting area will LOOK like the show is "too crowded".
That's because they HOLD the 2nd crowd outside the theater while the CMs CLEAN it after the first crowd has exited.

Then, they will let those waiting together in that big group IN... all at once, and there will be PLENTY of room.

(The theater holds 10,000 guests!)

We like to eat our evening meal while waiting for Fantasmic! to start.
You can bring in items from the counter-service places in MGM, or they DO have concession stands at the rear of the theater serving "baseball stadium-type" food and drinks. Yes, even beer, sold strictly ONE-at-a-time, one-only-to-a-person, so a single person can't go and buy beer for other members of a group... all guests wanting to buy a beer must be present in-person at the counter.

At that time of year you should only have to arrive 20-30 minutes prior to get good seats.

I am sure you can walk right up at the second show and get good seats, no problem. As an example we were at the second show on Christmas night in 2005 and I was amazed to see that only about 1/3 of the seats in the entire theater were taken.

Just wanted to chime in on taking a 3 year old.... I think it depends on your child's temperament. I took my DD to Fantasmic right after she turned 3 and she got scared, but it was manageable. I ended up holding her on my lap for most of the show and telling her it was going to be ok, but given the choice to do it over again, I would have waited until she was a bit older.

A stupid question - what should we expect from the Fantasmic show? I always read that is the best show in WDW (but with some frightening scene which may scare pre-schoolers). Which characters are in the show (and how long is the show)? Would it be too loud for a toddler?

It stars Mickey and it has most all of the characters from the most popular and classic Disney films.

It is also the single loudest show in all of Disney.

Music, "live" fire, fireworks, water effects, a giant snake, an immense dragon, plus much more, all combine for 27 minutes of AMAZING theater.

If you'd like a pre-view, here are links to a video presentation I shot and edited of the entire show.

I go every year at the same time the OP is going (the first week in Jan.). The theatre has always been packed 30 minutes prior to showtime. Even if you don't think that there are many people in the park, they all come out of the woodwork for Fantasmic.

I would say your wait time depends on when you get in line. I have seen it start generally about 90 minutes before each time....unless it is off season.
