Is Fantasmic the same in DL as it is in WDW?

We are WDW veterans and are looking to do things in DL that are different from WDW. We will only have two park days and are going July 5th and 6th, so I want to make the most of our time there.

I would really appreciate input on what to not miss while at DL. I have only been there twice, and one of those times I was only 6 years old. It will be myself, DH, AND THREE BOYS AGES 9-17. We are DVC members and will be staying at VGC. :yay:

Thanks!

HydroGuy has a great thread for WDW vets. You should head over there, for sure! Lots of great tips.

Having seen Disney World's Fantasmic for the first time this year, it is similar, but is Much Much less in quality than Disneyland.
Disney World has stadium dedicated to just Fantasmic with twice the viewing area and seating.

In Disneyland you are much closer, the show is better and Spectular, where DW is just dull.

Examples:

The Dragon in Disneyworld is a just a Dragon Head on a telephone poll.
In Disneyland it is a Huge full anamatronic (Murphy).

Disneyland has a Pirate Ship and in the Finale the large Mark Twain Steamboat has nearly every Disney Character, not a small tugboat with a few Cartoon Characters.

First, visit California Adventure. The Cars Land area is the big thing you want to catch. Tower of Terror and Screamin' are pretty similar to their counterparts at WDW (I would say the WDW versions are slightly better).

You definitely want to catch Indiana Jones ride. It's a lot of fun. Also, Pirates and Big Thunder are much better at DL. Matterhorn is not that great - especially if you compare it to ExEv over at the AK. Definitely catch Space Mt as it's waaaayyyy better than the one at WDW.

As for Fantasmic!, yes it's a better version than they have at WDW. However, If you have to pick between that and fireworks, I go with the fireworks. Even though it's better, it's still the same show that you can catch every night of the week at DHS.

There are MANY rides and shows that are even better at DL than they are at WDW. People often say that disney world has quantity, disneyland has quality. I so agree, especially in terms of Fantasmic. It truely is better at DL, and since it is around the rivers of America, it gives it a more real feel. There are many different scenes, the dragon (Murphy) is better, and it is more action-packed overall. The only thing that they could do better is the seating! Nope, no amphitheater seating here in DL!

The SuperThread and Disneyland 1951 have great information about F! at DL and the differences to WDW. DL is currently in the process of implementing FP and Dining Packages for F!, which impacts the viewing area. Regardless of what happens with FP, there is no stadium seating for F! at DL and that is probably most folks biggest complaint with DL's version of F!. In terms of the show itself, DL has several elements that are markedly different (and I'd say, better) than WDW version.

Some elements are the same, but there are three major differences:
  • Peter Pan versus Pocahontas - DL uses the Columbia Sailing Ship to double as Captain Hook's pirate ship. It has a very impressive entrance. There is no Pocahontas sequence at DL.
  • Maleficent as a Dragon - Both shows feature a climatic battle between Mickey and Maleficent as a dragon. The DL version used to have the same dragon as DHS, but the dragon was completely overhauled. It how is much more substantial and quite impressive.
  • Finale - Both show feature a steamboat at the end of the show, with Steamboat Mickey and friends. DL's version uses the Mark Twain (the equivalent to the Liberty Belle), so it is much more impressive to see.

There are other minor variations, but those are the major ones that come to mind.

In terms of differences, I'm surprised HydroGuy didn't link you to his "DLR Guide for WDW Vets". It's worth checking it out.
