My DS is trying to research our family tree. There used to be ancestry.com for info, but now everything is for a fee.

Anyone know of any free websites to do the research on?

Try www.familysearch.org. It's the Mormon site, I believe.

these days, if you want to do any kind of serious genealogy research online (as opposed to in libraries), you have to pay. the stuff that is free will only get you so far.

I use the surname message boards on www.rootsweb.com and genforum.genealogy.com.

There used to be a great site called Cyndislist.com??
She had free and fee links...
Also, try the Social Security site (official),
we found out what NO ONE could tell us for years,
(where/when my mother's father had died).
