Woke up this morning with a flat air mattress and it was very, very cold in the tent. I'd brought extra blankets but the children needed them and there were no extras. The showers at Nahalem were free if you were camping at the park so I had a nice, hot shower...lovely!

We packed up the van and went for once last run on the beach before heading out for our drive down the Oregon Coast to Sunset Beach State Park in southern Oregon.

We finally left the camp at 9:45am and drove for a few hours to Newport where we had a picnic on the beach for lunch. The views of the oregon coast are amazing.

Our second stop of the day was at the Sea Lion Caves. The kids loved it although Gabe was a bit worried about the cave collapsing (he would prove to be the child that was frightened of a lot of the rides at Disneyland too).

We had to stop a the sand dunes so my DH and kids could run, jump and play! We left the dunes at about 4pm and headed to our campsite. It was a nice spot but didn't come close to the beauty of Nahalem. We had a huge, private, corner campsite and it was only a short walk to the beach.

Beware of the raccoons, they managed to get into our tote and take most of our dry-goods food!! No worries though...from then on we put all our food into the van at night.

I have to mention the kids and the drive. I was prepared for the worst as my three had never been on a long drive before. They were amazing. They played imaginative games, watched DVD's and played Gameboy and not once did a fight or argument occur! Amazing!

Today we left Sunset Beach and would travel to Humbolt State Park to see the redwoods and camp. It was another long driving day and we didn't find it as interesting or as beautiful as the oregon coast. The campsite I had in mind was full as there was going to be a marathon the next day. The ranger directed us to another site a little further on and sure enough, there was lots of space. After dinner we went for a walk in the forest and upon returning to camp we noticed Tasha had a tick on her! DH got it out and I spent a sleepless night wondering if she was going to be okay! She was her perky self in the morning but for the rest of the trip I was a bit worried about her. As soon as we got home we went to the Dr. where he said she was just fine!

Today we drove from Northern California to San Francisco over the Golden Gate Bridge. The kids were not as impressed as my DH and I about the bridge! We camped in Halfmoon Bay State Beach. It was a lovely spot but the wind really can blow there! Wow! It is also a fairly open campsite, not private at all. We didn't spend much time here...quick visit to the beach and then bed.

Today we drove from San Francisco to Los Anageles via the I5. It was a long drive but we made it to Hollywood where we would spend the night in a hotel. We went for a walk and dinner 9 (Disney Soda Shop) and the kids were excited about a hotel room after sleeping in the tent for so long.

May 9th

The kids and I left Dad in Hollywood to attend his E3 conference and we drove to Anaheim. We left our hotel in L.A. at about 8:30am after breakfast and it was smooth sailing to Anaheim. Since we were way to early to check in and we wouldn't be going into Disneyland on this day we stopped at the Character Warehouse to check it out. We didn't end up buying anything (the kids had their own money to spend but decided to see what Disneyland had to offer before spending it).

We dropped the van off at the hotel, the Candy Cane Inn, at about 11:30am and headed to Downtown Disney. The kids had fun looking in the shops and watching the parrots at the Rainforest. After a quick picnic lunch out of the van we checked in and headed for the pool. We had a great time swimming around. The pool is small but it never got too busy while we were there, often we were the only ones. It is a shallow pool, only 5.5ft in the deep end. Our room was right by the stairs on the second floor close to the front. I worried about the noise from the stairs but it wasn't an issue at all. We were in a standard room (BCAA discount of $92/night) and it was big enough for all of us (DH would join us on Friday and stay we would all stay until Sunday). There was limited space for clothing though. The kids clothes went in drawers and I just lived out of the suitcase. Everything was clean and nice looking (and I'm a bit of a hotel snob.) The grounds were beautiful with lovely flowers all over the place.

After our swim we went to dinner at Millies. This turned out to be the kids favourite place to eat!

Oh, and I forgot to mention. On our was from San Fran to L.A. we forgot our double jogging stroller at the gas station (minus the wheels) and unfortunately someone took it just after we left (we drove 60 miles back to get it but it was gone) We were upset but make the decision to let our frustration go. I bought a single umbrella stroller from Target to use at Disneyland. Tasha does not walk well. She is our sprinter...not into long distance. The other two are excellent walkers so Jacquie ended up walking more then her big sister. I should have just bought the sit 'n stand stroller I was humming over but couldn't justify!

Thanks for the great reports. I grew up in the Bellingham area and have taken this same road trip with my parents when I was young, several times. They are great memories. I am sure your kids will also have fond memories of the family time together.

Loved your report...1 ?...How long was the drive from S.F. to L.A. via 5??

It probably would have taken us about 6 hours....unfortunately we had to backtrack 60 miles to see if your stroller was still at the gas station so it took us more like 8 hours!

Enjoyed reading your report ~ Thanx for sharing.
