Guests Say Bed Bugs Found In Orange County, Disney Hotels.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- Bed bugs are infesting some high-end, Orange County resorts and some of the most well-known hotels are paying customers to stay quiet about it.

Even the most popular hotels are not immune. One family said they were bitten by the bugs at the Disney All-Star Movie Resort. They backed out of an interview after they said Disney offered them $5,000 and a free trip to keep quiet.

:worship: :scared:

Doesn't sound like they stayed very quiet, did they?

No matter what hotel I'm checking into, the first thing I do is check the bed for bedbug evidence. It can happen anywhere.

I don't think Disney offered the family anything to "keep quiet". It's a normal procedure to refund money or give something extra if a guest has been inconvienced.

The article also said there are three reasons for the increase in bed bugs. Certain pesticides are now banned, more foreign tourists are visiting (the bugs get into luggage and travel well - it's NOT because these people are dirty), and it's been a very mild winter so fewer bugs are killed naturally. The article also says it's not an issue of cleanliness.

I also wonder how much attention this article would have gotten if the headline didn't mention Disney?

What do you look for?

Has anyone read an article stating exactly where overseas they know these bedbugs are? I hate generalizations like "foreign". Foreign could mean Antarctica and I think it would be too cold for a bedbug to survive there. I have never heard of a bedbug here and never seen one either.

Thank you for mentioning that one can have bedbugs and be clean. One can have roaches and be clean as well. I would be horrified to bring home either since we don't even have roaches in Naples, so I understand everyone's concern. Off topic, but I would love to sneak a few squirrels home with me. We don't have those either. Could I offer a few rats or bats in exchange for some squirrels?

This is absolutely so disgusting I can't believe it. If Disney has a problem with this and is being quiet about it, they will be sorry. If you stay in a hotel room that has bed bugs, you will bring them home to your house and NEVER get rid of them. I just read an article about a couple who stayed at a hotel in NYC, brought bed bugs home with them, and haven't been able to enter their own bedroom in over a year. I am going to WDW in June and I am now going to ask Disney directly and IN WRITING if they have had ANY reports of bed bugs at my resort. I do not think this is something they can lie about. If there really were any bed bugs at All-Star Movies, they are still there, folks. Unless they closed the entire building, replaced ALL mattresses, carpeting, furnishing, and linens, removed all wall paper, repainted, and had the building tented and sprayed they are still there, which means they are on the clothing and in the luggage of every single person who stays there.

I think that this is an overreaction.

From the website of Harvard University.

What do you do if you find bedbugs.

"Don’t panic. Although bed bugs can be annoying, they can be battled safely and successfully if you adopt a well-considered strategy."

From all I have read and seen about bed bugs they can be picked up anywhere and yes Disney is included and so is Italy google the words bed bugs Italy or Disney if you really want a good gross out. This is not the first report I read about someone at Disney getting them. I believe it was on 60 minutes or one of those shows that I heard about this first. In reality you could get lice, roaches or other such things anywhere including sending your kids to school. Some people go on vacation to rid their house of lice and stay in unsuspecting hotels without even realizing they could leave them behind. It is up to you if you will let that stop you from traveling. We can get illnesses and lice just going to the grocery store. We can't live in a parinoid state every day. I don't mean to gross anyone out it is just every day reality. It won't stop me from going to Disney.

That's our wonderful responsible media providing unbiased, non-sensationalized news.

Not sure what's worse, the media or the public buying this stuff.

loco4dis, do you really expect any hotel that might have bed bugs in some of the rooms to announce it to the press???

I know you will get nothing in writing from Disney so if bed bugs bother you then you might need to stay somewhere else. The problem with that is since they didn't name the names of every hotel in Orlando that could have them you are on your own.

If you find any I would call the front desk or speak with a manager and see what they will do for you.

:thumbsup2 ITA!!! That won't stop me from traveling! It's like saying, "I'm not going to ride in a car because I might be in a wreck" or something like that.

Family Paid By Disney To Keep Quiet About Finding Bed Bugs In Hotel

Bed bugs are infesting some high-end, Orange County resorts and some of the most well-known hotels are paying customers to stay quiet about it.

Does not surprise me. My friends stayed at Disney last year and had horrible service with torn, shredded towels, bedspreads, shower curtains.

Needless to say, after they complained to their TA and to the CMs they were reimbursed part of their expenses.

You know, if they are going to give one family $5,000 and a free trip, they should do it for everyone who finds bedbugs... just sad.

Oh great.... I know it's posssible to run into this problem anywhere, but I'm really sad to hear it's happening at Disney. I fear I may never sleep once we get there.

I don't like "reality" sneaking into my disney vacation! It's not right!:scared:

How exactly do you check for bed bugs? The thought has never really crossed my mind before if I'm honest :confused3

I'm not sure how true this is but I heard bed bugs like warmth. If you pull the sheets and blankets off the bed and blow the mattress with a hair dryer this will attract any bugs that might be hiding. I think that will bring them to the surface.

This is from the U of Kentucky Entomology Dept. It has lots of information on bed bugs.

http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef636.asp

Concerned travelers may want to check their bed for telltale signs of the bugs -- a common practice years ago. This would entail examining the bedsheets and upper and lower seams of the mattress. Some professionals also suggest removal and examination behind the headboard, a frequent hiding place for the bugs in hotel rooms. If bed bugs are detected, travelers can request another room. Concerned travelers may also want to elevate suitcases off the floor (e.g. on a luggage stand). Inspecting or vacuuming luggage upon arriving home is less useful since it is hard to detect bed bugs inside a suitcase.
