Usually, we drive when our 3 kids are along and fly when it's just dh and me. Driving with the kids hasn't saved us any money over the past year. In fact, driving was more expensive than flying for our October trip. So, why do we drive? Well, for many reasons. One, we leave in the late afternoon. The kids watch a movie or two then fall asleep. Dh and I take turns driving through the night. It's rather peaceful. Two, we can leave when WE are ready rather than when the flight is scheduled (or NOT scheduled as has happened to us on more than one occasion!!). Three, we live more than 2 hours from the nearest airports -- which is also in a different time zone. Thus, to make the morning flight to Orlando which leaves at 7 am, we have to leave home at 2:30 AM. Yes, AM. That means we don't go to bed anyway. (Note: Dh and I were able to fly out at night for our July/Aug. trip. We did not arrive at our WDW resort until after 1 AM. Still not good with kids.) Four, I've been bumped or had a flight with my kids cancelled one too many times. Being stuck in Atlanta, Norfolk, Pittsburgh (You get the idea?) with 3 young children for upwards of 12 hours one time is NOT my idea of fun. Also, these unexpected layovers can become QUITE expensive -- meals, entertaining toys, alcoholic beverages to calm adults, etc. I could go on and on, but I won't. Enough said. Needless to say, we will be driving to WDW in December.
