Any else find that the family name history that they run for you at the UK pavilion is completely incorrect? Mine was off by about 200 years and the other things stated were nowhere near correct. Anyone else have them run your name and find errors in what they came up with?

I'm sure somewhere in there there is a disclaimer that says some thing like for entertainment purposes only. Don't try to use these documents to try to claim to be the 11th Earl of Sandwich (who is a real person and yes is part owner of the Earl of Sandwich at DTD) :goodvibes

They are just looking up your name is some database or a derivation of that name, not doing a full genealogical search.

Yeah, I know my family were fletchers (arrow crafters) for some lord and were granted a coat of arms for their service, etc, etc, yadda-yadda-yadda, so I found it interesting that the coat of arms they came up with showed a hand grasping arrows. Do I think that's the "exact" coat as issued by the crown? Probably not.

I know it is not an exact geneology, but mine was completly incorrect with facts that are readily available in basic history books. To tell me my family name doen't show up comming to the US on any records untill the 1800s. I asked to lady where they got their information. She said it was all done by Oxford Universty or something like that. well any basic research will show my family here in the first half of the 1600s settling CT for the British and then helping to remove them during the Revolution.

I know there are errors that will happen. It by no means affected me other than to give me a chuckle. I was wondering if anyone else found any glaring errors.

Like I said they aren't genealogists they are sales people trying to sell you some "coat of arms" or some tartan plaid if they can find some sort of Scottish link. Their "research" maybe some pre packaged
system that any shop can buy.

They just hope that most people that come in aren't as knowledgeable as you are. :thumbsup2

I wonder if some people come in and once they find their coat of arms ask to be someone else because the colors don't match the decor of their living room. :lmao:

Having done some basic research on my dad's side, and seeing the poor/unreadable condition of some of the materials, there is a 0% chance that something like this is accurate. Even a family member as recent as my grandmother was passing off an incorrect name for the ship her husband came to America on (the correct ship's record is searchable online from Ellis Island).

Many people have same name and not related at all. It was just not about your family, that is all.

I honestly don't think I would travel to Disney World to get my family's heritage. If I didn't know it (which I'm well versed), I could think of much better places to get the history.

I would put as much weight on a family history gathered at Disney World as I would on a fortune teller's reading on an oceanside boardwalk.

Hey! Are you trying to say that the fortune that was told to me by the lady in Atlantic City wasn't true???:scared1: Say it isn't so!!

I did this at the pavilion and got a nice explanation of the last name for my in-laws. It is generally accurate but of course, these are very generalized histories of the origins of most names. There could be an entirely different reason your name doesn't fit with those generalizations (different spellings, names completely being mangled when your relatives migrate to different countries, and of course, they don't know all your marriages and other names).

The place is actually another company that has other offices and one of them just runs out of the UK pavilion. I don't have the items I bought anymore (they were gifts) but they had all the information on that company and they have an online site as well as other locations.

They certainly don't make up the information for the names, but it doesn't necessarily mean that everything they say in there will pertain to you or your family. They do make a nice gift though and my in-laws really appreciated it!

We did a search on my DH's family surname (which is Italian) and found that his ancestors were stonecutters, which we knew already, so that part was true. The funniest thing is when we got a print out of his family crest or coat of arms (not sure what it was called). The main feature is a naked man riding a tiger! :scared1: Totally cracked up my kids and I. :lmao::lmao::lmao: My DH didn't think it was at all amusing. The naked guy in the picture looked just like his cousin Eddie!:laughing::laughing:

I haven't done it at WDW, but at Universal when they pulled up my name there were 5 main versions of it. And it's a VERY simple name!

Anyone that does a serious genealogy knows that these Disney type name searches and coat of arms are just very generalized. Thank the Lord. But it's still always fun to see your name isn't it? If they knew what my Irish great great grandfathers and great grandfathers were involved in, it would require quite a conversation with the children. :lmao:

I think it has to be just for fun. How could they possibly trace your exact family name? I know in my family on every side they've changed the spelling of their last names a number of times over the generations.

We looked our name up a few trips ago for fun. My kids thought it was hysterical that the family coat of arms was a big green chicken! Their dad....not so much. :lmao:

regards

Actually from everything we have researched we are all related. From two brothers who came over in the early 1600s. One eventuually returned to England and one Stayed. and we grew from there. We have been in contact with diffenernt Familys from around the country with our name and the ones who know their history all trace their Family to CT(so far we are all realated) , the ones who don't know don't know.

All I was asking is if those who know their family history and did this found any gross errors.

I always assumed the cota of arms were scams

I would hardly call the coats of arms "scams" since they are so easily researched on other web sites. And are recorded in historical records.

I would think that anyone who believes that they would receive detailed and accurate information of their particular branch of a family from a source such as this is the same someone who believes the information relayed to them by a WDW bus driver.

I think the whole family tree/coats of arms is just great if you take it for what it is: for entertainment purposes only. When we did ours we laughed our heads off at the differences between our family history and what was given to us at the Epcot store. I certainly wasn't going to get upset by it.

Maybe you would have felt better about your experience if they had a disclaimer mounted for all to see. Something like "Your family tree and coat of arms revealed while u wait. Nah, we're just messin' with ya." :P

If I was buying anything related to this, would make sure it is correct fist, and would not put a whole lot of trust in what is at disney.
But I have been to the shop, for us, the coat was correct.

People there are no lines to read inbebtween here. I am not heart broken. No need for disclaimers for me to "feel better about my experience"

It was a simple question asking if anyone else noticed glaring errors.

To be honest I thought it might have been a programmimng error and i was trying to see if anyone else noticed glaring errors.because mine was completly incorrect especially with the info comming from a major university
