I've decided that NYC will be our family April vacation. As much as I would love to stay in the City the cost, parking and lack of pools at the hotels, as well as a fear of being "stuck" in the city should anything happen, has me thinking outside of the city.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction? Hartford, New Haven, CT, Anywhere outside of the city? Also, I need to figure out how to get INTO the city, (ie: train, subway, etc)

Thanks so much!

Hartford I would think is too far. How far outside the city do you want to be? If you stay somewhere in Westchester County NY, like White Plains, you would be a quick train ride away from NYC.

we are staying here

Ramada Inn Rochelle Park Paramus Area
375 W Passaic St
Rochelle Park, NJ

US
we got a great price on hotels.com

This is a great place to stay.

It's on the other side of the Hudson river and looks at NYC. You can get in and out of the city by a Ferry boat. The hotel will shuttle you to the ferry. There is a movie theater in walking distance plus a ton of places to eat and great shopping (tax free in Jersey). The room are a little pricey but the have a small kitchen and are HUGE. We use to live in the area but when we went back to stay for a visit we stayed here and really loved it.

Thanks for the suggestions.
The Homewood Suites looked great, but no pool!
The Ramada has gotten terrible reviews on both Tripadvisor and Obtiz! I don't normally go solely on reviews, but they all have the same complaints.

Any other suggestions?

I would like to stay somewhere that is accessible by train/boat/subway to NYC and that has an indoor pool

We LOVE this hotel! The rooms are huge and the walk to movies and shopping is very short.

Will you have your own vehicle?

We are going up for Spring Break and staying at the Residence Inn in Elizabeth, NJ. We plan to drive to Staten Island and park then take the ferry over (I know this is a long way to do it but the kids love riding so close to the Statue of Liberty plus parking for the ferry here is much cheaper than parking in the city or at the other ferry lots in NJ).

There are several hotels around Newark, NJ airport that have very reasonable rates - about $100 a nite. Not sure which have indoor pools but you could search on the websites of each hotel chain. You can also take the hotel shuttle to the airport and then take the AirTrain/NJ transit into the city.

How about the Embassy Suites in Secaucus, NJ? I believe they have a pool, free hot breakfast, manager's reception, and I believe there is a shuttle that goes into Port Authority. Shouldn't take more than 15 - 20 minutes if it's not rush hour. We're 20 minutes from Newark Airport, and it's not a nice area at all.

We just got back from our trip and wanted to add that the Residence Inn in Elizabeth, NJ DOES have an indoor pool and hot tub. We had to stay an extra day because of the bad weather and the younger kids spent most of the day in the pool while the older girls walked around Jersey Gardens mall across the street.

Our rate was only $106 for a 1 bedroom suite which had a queen bed in the bedroom and a pull-out sofa plus a full size fridge and microwave.

I would highly recommend this hotel!:yay:

We stayed in Secaucus NJ for two trip. Very easy bus ride into the city.

we always stay at Marriott in times sq or in financial district. They both have valet parking I don't know about a pool though I've never looked.

I would highly recommend the Hilton Garden Inn Secaucus/Meadowlands
875 Route 3 East Service Road Secaucus. We stayed there 3 years ago and it was great. Rooms were nice, very reasonable and there is a pool. Bus into the city right at the doorstep. Lots of parking (don't think there was an additional cost) Coming back was a little tricky, you had to cross a fairly busy road, but it certainly wouldn't stop me from staying there. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!
