Family Board Game Ideas

No TV growing up so we played games a lot-mainly cribbage and Aggravation. They are both awesome.

Second Settlers of Cataan. Carcassone is similar but simpler-lots of fun for kids and adults.

Millesbourne-car chase card game-simple and fun. I also like Phase 10 and UNO and Blokus.

Oh, and latest fave is 10 Days in Africa. Simple to learn, plays in about 20 minutes, fun and you even learn a little geography.

My husband and girls LOVE Settlers of Cataan!

We play a lot of games! Here are some of the ones we play most frequently.

Parcheesi/Sorry (these are similar in concept, but we like Parcheesi better)
Sequence
Racko
Uno (various versions)
Skipbo
Life (various versions)
Mille Bornes
Ticket to Ride (we have the USA version)
Settlers of Catan
Blokus
Apples to Apples Jr.
Pictionary (we still have just the Jr. version)
Scattergories
Scene It (Disney version)
Dutch Blitz
WhooNu
Pit
Yahtzee
Rummicube

Dd loves Monopoly and we have 3 different themes of it, but we don't play it often because it takes a long time.

As far as Life goes, dd likes the original version best, I like the PoC version best, and ds likes the Indiana Jones version best. The rules vary for each game.

Does anyone have Memoir 44? I bought it for ds for Christmas.

Our fav's are
Scatagories
Taboo
Mexican Train and wildfire dominos.

I think I'm going to get DD apples to apples this year it seems to be a hit with everyone:goodvibes

Our favorites are Settlers to Catan, Ticket to Ride and Zoolaretta. They are longer, more complicated but great for older kids and adults.

Ok...since this is a Disney Board...I'll add one of our favorites....

Magic Kingdom Game
http://www.amazon.com/Hasbro-41489-Disney-Magic-Kingdom/dp/B0001GDOZG

It's basically a race to get into the park, hit 1 attraction from each land, and get out of the park. We like to play it when we are getting close to a trip as it reminds us of attractions we want to visit. The layout of the board is close to the layout of the actual MK map and it's a game that can be played in less than an hour.

Speed :teleport:

I am looking for a new family game. I love playing games but sometimes have to convince my family (dh, ds15, dd112). The kids love electronic things but I like a good old game. I am getting Balderdash this year so far. Am considering Pit or 5 Crowns (card game). Anyone have suggestions.

One of your kids is 112 years old? Man, you must be at least 130 or so! And you have a 15 year old? Having a kid at 115 must have been tough!!

I kid, I kid. :rotfl:

How about that new Scrabble Slam card game. Heard great reviews of it. Pictionary has a new one where you draw on a little man, something like "Who am I?" Scategories (sp?) is my fav.

Another vote for Banangrams!!! Our new addictions..we've played it almost everyday for the 1 1/2 weeks we've had it. I bought 4 to give as Christmas gifts.

I've got to check out this Bananagrams. They carry it at our independent "high end" toy store downtown...might have to take a run down there tomorrow. Sounds like a fun family game and a good spelling lesson too!

We just got Quelf, and we love it! I highly recommend it. :thumbsup2

They carry it at Target now, too!

You guys inspired me - when I ran to Target for my ONE last thing today I ended up getting two more games - SET and one I forget the name- something like Bet I Can Make You Laugh? Looked cute for all ages and we need that with a 4 year old around.

Your kids are old enough for some of our favorite strategy games, like Ticket to Ride and Carcassone. Both are really fun! Rummikub and Sequence are good too, although Sequence is only for 2-3 players.

more people can play sequence. you play as teams

We like the game Wits and Wagers.
If you like trivia with a little bit of betting, try it. Our kids and their friends all enjoy this game. We've played with kids 9 and up. The best part is you don't have to know the right answer to play and win.

This is a great thread! Many of our favorites have been mentioned, and I've jotted down some ideas for new games as well.

Thanks for asking the question OP :thumbsup2

If you're shopping on Amazon, Flinch (card game) is $4.99. It wouldn't get here in time for this Christmas, but it might be a good stocking stuffer for next year or something to set aside for Easter baskets. I haven't played it yet, but it looks like a good game with a lot of positive reviews.

We like the classics like Monopoly and Life, as well as Blokus, WhooNu and Sorry Sliders. :)

I went to Target this morning and bought Bananagrams and Would You Rather (WYR was on sale this week for $20). I hope my family enjoys them! They are kinda picky when it comes to games!
