False Negative COVID test?

I haven’t heard of any cases of false negatives or false positives here. My daughter had a test yesterday morning and got her negative result this afternoon. It was a very slim chance but she’s a hypochondriac so we felt it was better to test just in case.

WOW! Is all testing turn around that quick? We are at 7 - 10 days in most cases.

My daughter’s boyfriend tested positive with no symptoms. He got a call from the cdc and was told he could test positive for up to 6 weeks but is considered not contagious 10 days after testing or 4 days fever free (but he never had a fever). Did they call you?
Yes they did. Someone from my states health department also contacts me every other day to track my symptoms.

However in order to return to work even knowing all of that my employer still requires 2 negative tests to be allowed back. So that is their call to make.

What state are you in?

I got one of my tests back in approx 24 hours and my other tests have taken no longer than 48 so far. I am in Illinois.
California.

I can’t speak for the whole country, but I’m pretty sure it’s about 24 hours. My daughter didn’t need a referral or an appointment. She waited about 20 minutes, had it done, and then went on with her day.

don’t forget that I’m in a different country..

Last month my wife checked many of the boxes for Covid symptoms and her Dr wanted her to test...The PA who did the test told her that the test reports false negative about 30% of the time. She basically had no faith in the testing process.
I tested negative and my doctor said the same thing. 30% false negative rate. I still had to continue quarantine for that reason.

It took about 5 days for my results to come in, btw. This was in late May in Texas.

My mother, who lives in the same area, has more recently been tested a few times prior to medical procedures, and got her results within a day or two.

I think I'm in the same country as you, but a different province. In Ontario, the turn around time seems to be about 24 hours, too. My daughter had to be tested last week before she started working at a local long term care home as a PSW. About 24 hours after her test, she was able to log on to the provincial health site and get her results.

I’m in Manitoba. My daughter was able to log into our website to get her results.

A local company just got FDA approval last night for a rapid test via saliva. It's one that can be done at home and then sent off to the lab with results that can be tracked via an app in about 24-48 hours after the lab has received it. It's really needed. I have heard of issues with testing as far as timing of it and then of course turn around and false results. Turn around results is an issue here because of increased spread. The hospitals as they should IMO are getting priority whereas places like CVS have significantly increased their turnaround time.

From the company's website: "a saliva-based COVID-19 RT-PCR test that can be self-collected at home, work or any other setting. The test, shown in CRL’s EUA studies to be more sensitive and accurate than the standard COVID-19 anterior nasal swab test, detects the presence of coronavirus in the saliva of the test taker. In addition, the test is more comfortable and easier to administer, is not “technique dependent” and virtually anyone can self-collect an adequate sample for testing, with test results available in 24-48 hours of receipt at CRL. CRL Rapid Response™ is ready for immediate commercial launch, making it the first large-scale service of its kind focused on the American workforce. Testing is critical to safely helping America get back to work, which is why CRL is offering these tests to employers in businesses, universities, government agencies, nursing homes and other organizations. CRL has already lined up several partnerships for CRL Rapid Response™ testing."

*CRL= Clinical Reference Laboratory
*EUA= Emergency Use Authorization

I've underlined an important part regarding testing reliance.

Gosh I just hope this puppy is rolled out here quick. Maybe just maybe this will help us out here if it's more accurate, easier to take and less painful.

I currently have Covid. I tested negative at first, 2 days after my negative test I tested again and was positive that time.

My doctor said timing is critical on covid tests and you have to get the timing just right or it will read negative.

I’ll be taking another test in a about a week or so to see if I can get a negative so I can go back to work. A coworker of mine who tested positive a week before me has yet been able to get a negative to go back to work, so I am worried that I will keep showing positive as well. Coworker also had a much more mild case and far less symptoms than I have had.

Also worth noting, I have been sick for 3 weeks now. And I have never once had a fever over 99.9. It stayed 99.7-99.9 for over 10 days, my normal range is 98.6. My pcp said they haven’t seen a covid patient with a fever in weeks. Just wanted to add that bc I noticed you said the same thing about your temp.
In February I was sick with all the symptoms but it was not as wide spread and there was no testing, I did have a flu test which was negative. My co worker had a fever a week or so before me and it was 99.9 for over a week and thought she had the flu and tested negative. Her symptoms were much milder than mine but she was much younger. We both feel that we had it and she gave it to me. Its too late for anti-body tests and at the time they were not even available.

I am sorry you are sick. I hope you are able to get tested again and feel better soon. I have no idea about the false negatives.

So our governor (Ohio) tested positive today, then a few hours later tested negative. Who knows what to believe? But I know a number of people with symptoms who were unable to get tested who were told to assume they were positive...so I have very little faith in the “numbers” that are being reported.

We've had false positives around here, at least assuming that's what it was. An owner and employees tested before returning to work and they ALL got positives! Thinking that didn't make sense since they are all unrelated, they went to a different site the next day to test again and this time ALL negative.

My daughter tested last week after showing up for her dental appointment with a 100 degree temp. Then going home, taking her temp randomly and seeing that it hovered in the 99 range. No other symptoms, feels great, but her hypochondria kicked in and she had been around us and her grandparents two days prior. She did a walk up test in Washington DC and had her results about 36 hours later. Negative. She's going to go to Kaiser (her health care insurer) a few days before our beach trip in a few weeks and get tested. They are reporting a 24-48 hour turnaround.

My coworker is getting tested today because she is driving to Connecticut to visit her 100 y/o mother. We are in Virginia. She called around to CVS and Patient First who all offer testing w/o symptoms but told her their wait times were running 5-7 days (CVS much longer). It really depends on what lab they are using. She found another urgent care who tests in-house and she'll have her results in about 20 minutes. Prior to the trip, I think she needs a COVID test done within 72 hours and results back within that time.

That is WHY I asked if the testing was all that fast. A lot of states are having HUGE delays in getting test results.

They’re quoting 7-10 days around here as well. And DS has to get a test for school, that (back when they sent out that policy) was supposed to be done within 72 hours of returning to campus.

At that time, it would have been easy to do. (My DH had one before an outpatient procedure on his hand, and it came back, negative, within a couple of days.)

Apparently they are hearing the same from many places, as the school now says you can get it earlier and quarantine at home a few days longer instead.

But they are also testing the kids after they return - it looks they were able to get the saliva tests mentioned above. I hope everywhere has those soon!

Did you hear the Ohio Governor tested positive....then tested negative twice later. So much for trusting these tests.

it is frustrating that a person could test positive and then take another test and test negative. The nature of the beast I guess.
