We have an annual party for my DS who will be 6 soon. It really is more like a fall/pumpkin party vs. Halloween because we do not dress up. In the past we have painted the pumpkins and done simple games since the kids ranged from 2-4 but this year it will be primarily 6 year olds so I was wondering if anyone had any good ideas for games, etc. There are a few things I will repeat like the pumpkin painting, spider stomp which is putting a spider in a ballon and having them stomp on the balloon to get it out, and mummy wrap - not sure how I will do this one this year. Last year we just had them wrap each other up but maybe this year we will make it a race or something. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated.

How about rolling an apple with their nose? You could make it a race. rRolling an apple is harder than it looks because they aren't round.

You could play Pin the Nose on the Scarecrow.

You can have them paint with vegetables--corn, half a squash, potatoe cut into shapes. Use red, yellow & orange paints, mount the pictures in brown paper frames.

Use large vegetables to make music--pumpkins, dried corn, gourds, etc. Put on some Indian music and have a powwow.

A friend of mine has a "fall-o-ween" party that sounds similar to what you are planning.

Last year she had a game called "mummy the mommy" . It was a race with the toilet paper for the kids to turn thier moms into mummies. The first one to use up the whole roll of toilet paper (or was it 2 rolls?) and turn thier parent into a mummy won the game. It was pretty funny to watch - some of the kids got really dizzy going around and around thier moms!

Have you tried the Family Fun website? They usually have good ideas.

Thanks for all the ideas. I really like the one to use vegetables to paint a picture. Not sure if I will be able to do this and pumpkin painting at the party but it would be fun to do with my DS. I may try to incorporate it in the party too though because we will have all of the paints already out.

We are probably having a similar party for DS who will be 8 soon - his birthday is a week before Halloween and we prefer a fall party rather than Halloween themed also. We're using some of the ideas already mentioned on this thread (though I am glad you started it, so maybe we can get more ;)). We are also planning to tie powdered donuts onto a string and hang them. The kids would then race to see who could eat them quickest with no hands.

I've got to get to bed but I'm sure I'll be back to post more :)

Our VBS had a "country fair" theme one year -- they had a relay race shucking corn, which was really fun for everyone.

How did this work? What did they do exactly? Thanks.

Ok - I have a question regarding some games. We have a blow up sumo costume that is hilarious when you have it on. I am trying to think of some way to make a game out of it with 6 yr olds. I was thinking an adult would wear it and then the kids would do something. The only thing I can think of is put velcro on it and have them throw balls to stick but this would ruin the costume to use for Halloween. Also, thought of having them chase you but not sure if that would be much fun.

Also, looking for ideas do to a gross food game. Like put things in a box or bag and have them reach in to guess what it is. Any ideas for things to put in. I know spaghetti, grapes, etc. but looking for other ideas. Please remember this is for 6 yr olds so not too gross. thanks.

I did a fall themed party for my daughter last year and did pumpkin painting, but also had potato sack races (which they loved) and bobbing for apples (not likely to be repeated due to the germy factor).
I also had a scarecrow making section for the older kids - I took out some old clothes and pillowcases and bought some bales of hay for stuffing.\
I just saw that at Target they have alot of fall craft packages.
Just to note, I was at a party that had the mummy wrapping, but the mom bought a cheaper toilet paper and it kept breaking in pieces.

what about a gourd because the bumps on it might make it hard

You could steam a head of cauliflower for brains.

Well we had our party yesterday and it was great. The weather was beautiful and the kids had a great time. I think the game they like the best was also the simplest. It was a ring toss game where I put down a tablecloth on the ground, put candy, toys, etc. on the tablecloth and used some rings from another game. Anything they got in their ring they got to keep. Some of the other games we played were, spider stomp (spider in balloon & pop balloon), mummy wrap, bat toss which was 5 baskets and toss bats in them, witches nose, pumpkin passing, wiggle worm race, hay maze, pumpkin painting, & gross food game. It was a blast for the kids.

We went to a Halloween party last year and the host bought some of the mini pumpkins and hid them in the yard (kind of like an Easter egg thing). She made these really neat cookies that looked like witches fingers, very realistic. The cookies were tinted a light green and the "nails" were an almond. They were actually very tasty.

Glad to hear it was a great time! I love the spider stomp idea and plan to use that for our party - thanks :thumbsup2 What is witches nose?

This is what we had at our fall party today:

Pass the pumpkin (to music--whoever ended up with it got to keep it)
Guess the number of candy corns/pumpkins in the jar

Games for tickets (you win 1 ticket per game, need 3 tickets for a prize):

*Find the needle in the haystack (a pile of hay and big PLASTIC needles...were placed in the haystack).

*Corn husk ring toss

*Memory (make 5 matches, get a ticket)

*stick the nose on the scarecrow

Toss the pumpkin into the goldfish bowl (small lightweight craft pumpkins..you win the goldfish. These were donated by Petco).

Crafts:
Bracelet making (it was called something, but I forget..my kids just made bracelets)

Picture frames with the sticker-foam..fall themed

Leaf Wreath (glue fake leaves onto a paper circle. There was a ribbon that you also glued a poem to in the middle)

Make a scarecrow (paper cutouts, glue together)

Make an arrow (like an Indian arrow)--this was out of foam

There was a craft that made a card with a candy corn poem and on the inside the candy corn was glued in the shape of a star. We didn't do that, so no idea what that was.

And face painting.

The event was 3 hours--they had plenty of stations to fill the time. We didn't get to everything b/c I was tired and left after 2 hours.

And of course--lots of snacks brought by the parents.
