My son's school has fall break in October this year. We are in CA. I'd like a 5 night trip somewhere for $2K total (room, flight, car) not including food, gas, or misc stuff, for my son and I. He's 6. Any ideas?

I think we need a little more information before we can really answer this question. Do you enjoy the beach, quiet little towns, or are you looking for more of a big city experience? Do you love, or hate, museums? What part of California are you in? Is driving possible or do you want to fly? What about the train? Do you have friends or family that you'd like to see? I always try to incorporate a friendly visit if I can. G

Just the 2 of us. No one to visit. Plane, train, automobile is fine. My son is not a museum guy. Likes to be active and to play. We are in Los Angeles. We love the beach. Towns or big cities are fine.

I edited out where I asked how many travelers because I saw that you already told us, lol.

Have you done a San Francisco trip? That could be fun for you both.

Are you looking to stay in California, or leave the state?

I would think about what places interested us and sign up for discounts in those areas (like Groupon and DailyDeals).

We've been there. It definitely was fun. We did a bunch of northern CA stuff a couple of years ago.

So I'm thinking Vegas. Cheap. I can drive there and we can stay at the Four Seasons at the top of the Mandalay Bay. We can see a couple of shows, swim and play, etc. There's also a children's museum there. He likes those types of museums. Vegas will still have warm swim weather. I've been a bunch. He has never been. He'd get a kick out of the lifts on the strip at night just like I did as a kid. The FS has some strip view rooms so I'll probably book that.
