Fall 2010 Dining Reviews - Updated 3/10

After my lunch at Tusker House, I felt miserable. Not sick, just hot, tired, and cranky. So I went back to All Stars and took a nap, which I think was the best thing I could do. After my nap I felt very refreshed, and decided to go to the Magic Kingdom for the Main Street Electrical Parade and Wishes.

I decided to make a detour on my way to the Magic Kingdom though, and go to the Polynesian for dinner at Captain Cook's. They had a few vegetarian options, grilled cheese, which I've had before, and is good, but I like to try different things each time I go to a restaurant, pizza, which I didn't feel like, and a salad, which sounded interesting.

The salad had a citrus dressing, and was full of cucumbers, tomatoes, wonton strips, blue cheese, and pineapple. I thought the combination of pineapple and blue cheese sounded really weird, but it was really good, and the whole salad was really excellant.

For dessert there was a self-serve Dole whip machine, though I have to question if self-serve is a good idea, since it seems like it would be messy with people trying to fill their cups up as much as possible, but I'm glad this was available as an option, since I usually don't like most CS desserts.

I actually meant to try to get around to eating here again just for that salad, but I never did.

I had never been to a water park before this day, at least not a Disney one. I was with my friend Cathryn today, and we wanted an easy day before Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party that night, so we decided to go to Typhoon Lagoon. I bought a one-day ticket, which I upgraded later to a water park annual pass.

The water parks are great, but the food selection kind of stinks. There seemed to be only one restaurant to really get an actual meal, though there are a few snack stands around, as well as a bar near the wave pool.

I don't have pictures of our meal, as I hadn't taken my camera. I didn't want it to get damaged, or worse, stolen.

They had a few sandwiches, burgers, a salad, and pizza to choose from. Which I guess is as good as some of the other park counter service locations, but not eating meat, nothing looked all that great to me, plus everything was made to order, so I couldn't get a wrap without turkey, which looked like the best thing to me.

I had the salad, without chicken, and honestly I can't even remember it that well, I think there was corn, black beans, and cheddar in it, almost like they were trying to make a south-western sort of salad, which might have worked, but I found it to be very boring. And the dressing, which was some kind of herb based, was much too thick.

Cathryn had pizza, her son had a burger. They ate their food. I don't think there were any actual problems with anyone's food, I think it was just a very boring meal.

Cathryn and I both got fruit for our dessert, which was fresh and was actually my favorite part of the meal. I have no idea what her son had for dessert.

So I'd eat here again if I had too, but the rest of the times I went to the waterpark I ended up not eating until going back to All Stars, were there was a much better selection of food.

All caught up thanks to the handy links !!!! Followed you over from Karin's thraed !!!
I like to do links in case anyone wants to just read a review quickly and skip over comments. And Karin's reviews are also great - I was able to get caught up on reading hers the other day!

Great updates again! Just got caught up with your last page of reviews!

Funny thing you should review Typhoon Tilly's today too! :lmao:

After a short break in our rooms, Cathryn, her son, and I headed over to Epcot for dinner at Coral Reef before Mickey's Not so Scary Halloween Party that night.

I'd been to Coral Reef twice before, and both times the food had been fine, but Coral Reef had never been a must-do for me, and though I was hungry and ready for dinner, I wasn't expecting more than an average meal.

We were seated on the upper level, which I actually prefer, since the lower level right by the aquarium always seems kind of crowded, and children like to come up right by the tables down there to look at the fish. I also really liked our server that night, he was very humorous and efficient.

For my entrée I ordered the pan-seared seasonal catch, which that night was swordfish.

It was a nice portion, perhaps a little more done then I would’ve cooked it myself, served over a wild mushroom and bay scallop risotto with parsley-truffle oil. The risotto was very creamy and rich, and I don’t remember if I even finished it or not, but it was delicious.

Cathryn had the pan-roasted jumbo sea scallops and mussels.

It was served with fregola pasta in a tomato broth, topped with shredded chorizo. We couldn’t think of what the shreds were, and dummy me forgot I had the menu in my bag. I tried a piece of one of the scallops and they were very well prepared. I’m not going to give this a rating since I only did try a bite, but I know Cathryn really liked it.

Her son had the steak, which I think he just had fries with. It also came with asparagus, which Cathryn and I ate.

For desserts, I had the cheesecake napoleon, which was the no sugar added option.

I liked this a lot. The cheesecake was very light and more like a mousse then an actual cheesecake. It was topped with a seasonal fruit compote, which tonight was berries, which accompanied it very nicely.

Cathryn had the almond gelato.

It was served on top of a granola-marshmallow cookie, (think rice krispie treat with just granola instead,) and passion fruit sauce. I tried a bite of this as well, and it was good, but with just a bite, I don’t want to give it a rating.

Her son had the chocolate wave.

I didn’t try it, but I’ve had this before, and it’s really good, and he cleaned his plate, so I can only assume it’s still really good.

I also had a drink with dessert, the Citronge Café.

This was in a chocolate-swirled glass with Patron Citronge orange liquor, Patron XO café liquor, white crème de cacao, and half and half. It tasted like a very boozy creamsicle.

So Coral Reef has moved considerably up on my list of restaurants, and I will defiantly be eating there again.

Great update, we tried Coral Reef once and we had an awful meal (my son chicken was undercook and my fish was really bad).
I love the pictures.

I would suggest giving it another try. They had just changed the menu, and everything we ordered we liked. Though undercooked chicken is a serious problem.

Ummmm..... hello??? Donuts? :confused3

Best darn meal of the trip! :thumbsup2

great reviews. :thumbsup2
At Coral Reef, I had the catch of the day with the risotto. It was so delishious. :)

Today I slept in after a late night, which ended with me falling asleep around 2:00 AM. It might have been even later then that. When I woke up I decided to go to Downtown Disney instead of a park. I didn't spend much time there, as the stores aren't as unique as they once were, and after so many trips, there wasn't really anything I wanted to buy. I decided to have lunch at Wolfgang Puck Express before heading back to All Stars to do laundry.

Wolfgang Puck Express has a huge menu, with great selection and variety, especially for counter service, I just wish it wasn't so far out of the way, otherwise I'd eat here much more often. I also love that they try to use as much organic and all natural ingrediants as possible. I've always found to be their food very fresh tasting.

I had the four cheese pesto pizza.

The four cheeses were mozzarella, fontina, parmesan, and goat cheese, with the goat cheese being topped on fresh whole tomato slices which were exceptional. The crust was nice soft and chewy, the way a pizza should be after the disaster of a "pizza" at Tony's a few days before. If I had one complaint about it, it would be that it was a little too greasy.

For dessert I had the creme brulee.

This was good. It was a basic traditional creme brulee, and I'd get it again, but it wasn't the best creme brulee of the trip.

I also love that I get served at a table, like a traditional table service restaurant, but it's only a CS credit on the dining plan. And they have cherry coke here, which I only found at two places, here, and the Mara at Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Ohhh! I am really enjoying your report as well! We are leaving in 2 weeks and this is giving me some great information! I can't wait to go to WPE now! I will make that a must do! :thumbsup2
