It's such a disadvantage for the Saints in the Superdome to not have them pump up the decibels. We were in the front row last year and I can honestly say that the noise was downright deafening.

I get the feeling this thread is about football, which I don't watch so I can't comment on that.

There was some crowd noise piped into the NHL playoff games (which I did watch). It was pretty minimal -- I didn't even notice it till we'd watched several games -- but it did make it feel more "natural." I've also watched televised high school hockey games where the crowd is much smaller and/or been in a mostly-empty arena while play is going on and it's... weird. Things echo and it just doesn't sound the same. So I consider the crowd sounds more like "white noise" and they didn't bother me much.

I don’t watch sports so I can’t say if it would bother me but I do have a question for those that do. Is the fake crowd noise only being heard by people watching at home? Or is it being broadcasted where the players can hear it?

If it is something they are doing to help the players get into a normal groove I could see it being helpful. If it is just being played over the TV for watchers at home, it sounds stupid to me.

When the Stanley Cup playoffs happened, they pumped in crowd noise, and it was underwhelming. The season starts on Thursday (WOOHOO) and I haven't heard if there will be noise pumped in or not. I assume so, but, we'll see.

As a wrestling fan, shows without crowd noise ten to suffer. WWE has tried to remedy that with their Thunderdome concept, with fans watching live on webcams and being put on monitors all over the arena. But there's no way their audible reactions are real. But I prefer something over nothing.

I havnt seen this yet.. Here in Germany the Bundesliga doesnt have it and its wierd... you hear grunts and the playing shouting at each other, but still cant make out what they say... I would like to hear fake crowds if that makes it better.... right now its eery and echoy, strange...

Are these fake crowd sounds only for the TV viewer or does it play in the stadium for the players too??

I don’t mind it. I think I would hate complete silence. And like a pp says, it brings a sense of normalcy.

If they don’t show the stands it seems like a regular game in 2019.
It would not be complete silence, you'd actually hear the players communicating, which I find more interesting than fake crowd noise.

I don't mind it. I thought it would be more awkward, but sometimes I forgot there weren't actually crowds there when watching a game, so I guess they did a pretty good job with it.

Hasn’t bothered me one way or another but I watch with the sound off 80% of the time. 100% when it’s Aikman/Buck.

I'd rather hear what is happening on the field than fake crowd noise. I believe some of the EPL broadcasts in the UK broadcast on two channels, one with crowd noise and one without. I would choose the one without so you can hear the players and coaches and get a new perspective on the game that you don't get in normal times.

I don't like it but it is better than complete silence.
That's just it - it's not complete silence. I would love to hear the chatter. AYSO does a "silent Saturday" where parents and coaches have to keep quiet. At first it's weird, then you start to focus in on the kids playing the game and it's amazing. Mic up the players, keep a finger on that censor button, and let's hear the REAL game! I would at least like the option of turning off the artificial crowd noise.

That's so cute that you assume that I watch sports.

I guess I'll see if I like it on Sunday for the Super Bowl. The only other sports I watch are The Masters, where noise isn't preferred and the Triple Crown races.

The NBA playoffs had the sound as well as virtual fans, which I actually really liked. I've watched a Raptor's game or two of this current regular season and they do have the sound-track but not the virtual fans.

Well, you did open the thread... :rolleyes1

I don't care either way - it's just white noise in the background for me. I suppose it's nice to hear the player chatter, but it's fine with me to have the crowd noise added in also.

Well then answer the thread question by stating how you feel about the masters pumping in golf claps and "Get in the hole" yells.

In football, I just wish they'd pump in realistic crowd noise when the team is behind 20-0 like FIRE THAT COACH!!! YOU AINT NO GOOD. BOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!
Better yet pump in GO FOR IT WIMP!!! Then if they don't make it. SHOULD HAVE KICKED IDIOT!!

As hockey is the only sport I watch (which I can't because I don't have cable or satellite), I long to be able to hear the ice rather than fans. I love the videos off TV they show when they mic up players. The sound of the skates and puck on stick, that's the sounds I want to hear. I wish they could mic up all players and just broadcast that, but as Dale Jr once said, "that's my work office and if you don't want to hear us cussing, don't listen." It just doesn't work for broadcasting sports.

As long as the fake noise doesn't drown out the sound of the players cussing, officials telling coaches to shut up, and teammates yelling encouragement, it's okay. But I have really enjoyed hearing what actuallying is being said on the field since the fans left the stadiums.

The fake crowd noise can be amusing at times. When they push the wrong button for a certain play in hockey, it makes me laugh. Hearing the players on the ice, twigs/biscuit moving and the occasional cussing is more entertaining.

I think I would like to see a game without it to see how I feel about it. TV shows have had laugh tracks for many years and it sounds odd when you hear a comedy without it. One other thing I have noticed is the TV game shows, now without audiences, seem to be telling contestants to whoop it up a bit more to compensate, and a lot of it comes across as fake enthusiasm and is not a plus for me.
