Faith, Trust, And 58% Less Pixie Dust: A 2016 Tinker Bell Half Marathon Weekend Trip Report!

That is so frustrating!!! Really, that stuff shouldn't happen. I mean, sometimes you need to change something about a flight, but multiple times? And connecting instead of direct? That just seems excessive.
Right?? I've had it happen with them many times before, I think every time I have booked a flight with them. And what gets me is, they never call or email to inform me of the changes. I just have to know to check! My credit card company actually called to tell me every time there was a change (since I booked the flights using credit card points), but United never did. :rolleyes2 Southwest seems to have that capability, why not United?
Awesome!! I'm jealous of this whole trip - I keep telling my husband we need to eventually go to Disneyland :)
Yes you do!!
I don't care much for Tink, but I love this! The pattern is a million times better than most Dooney patterns I've seen.

Can't wait to read more!
It seemed to be a very popular pattern for them...the crossbody bags were gone by the end of the first day, and everything sold out before the race weekend was over!

Walt's Park...briefly

From there I headed back to Bell Services to add the wristlet to my luggage (still no room text!) and then headed to Disneyland Park!

Ahhhh.....

I really liked this Tiki Room shirt. I should have bought it!

Oh, castle. <3

I grabbed a HyperSpace Mountain Fastpass - return time was 7PM or something. Tomorrowland was crazy crowded the entire weekend, so I didn’t stick around for long.

Of course, soon after I got into the park, I got the text that the room was ready. :headache: Less than magical timing! My phone battery was on life support at this point and I was sure that my mom would be arriving soon, so I decided to head to the hotel.

Stopped for a picture with Chipper on my way out!

Sign outside of Naples...you're better than this, Downtown Disney! :sad2:

(I'm going to sound like a crabby whiner, but this is such a huge pet peeve of mine - it’s a HALF marathon! There is no Tink Marathon!!!)

Grabbed a pretzel from Wetzel's Pretzels on the way and faced it.

And headed into the hotel. Look who was there! Goofy! On his way to open up Goofy’s Kitchen for dinner!
26891643131_8b1bd70801_z.jpg

There was a woman behind me who was excitedly telling her kiddo that, "look, look! It's Doofy!" I was sure I had misheard her until she repeated "Doofy" multiple times. o_O Come on, lady!

Got into the room (#2013) at about 4PM. It was about what I expected - terrible view (which...we'd paid for standard view, so whatever) but with some cute details.

I unpacked and separated out my race outfits - and plugged in my phone. Sweet relief!

Here are the race shirts:

They came with these shells that I can clip onto the shoes...I will likely never use them. I also had the option to buy a little pair of clip-on Flounders for $5 (I passed):

5K outfit! Quiz time - anyone notice something missing from the 5K bib (besides my bib number, which I'd covered on purpose to post this picture to social media)?

I found myself with an awkward amount of time to kill - mom was on her way from the airport (in rush hour, ugh!) and I wasn’t sure what to do with myself. I headed to Trader Sam's for a drink!
26891646791_2d98318324_z.jpg

Hippopoto-mai tai! I'm pretty sure the skipper was trying to kill me - MAN was this strong. I could only finish half of it, and I was even feeling that!
26891649921_ab1904f85b_z.jpg

Mom arrived and we went to the room to drop off her stuff (I gave her the wristlet - she was very pleased with it!) before heading to the expo to grab her bib and shirt. We each bought a phone case from Roo Sport - I thought this was such a cool idea but ended up not loving running with it. It's supposed to be worn on the waistband but as you'll see in my pictures, I ended up carrying it because it never felt comfortable to me. Oh well! My mom thought it was genius and ended up buying like 4 of them to give as gifts. :)

We looked around a bit before heading to Downtown Disney for dinner at the Earl! I got the club and mom got a pizza.
26891651161_e562b54b6c_z.jpg

And then it was back to the hotel room for bed! We were spent!
26891651521_337e5d0857_z.jpg

Since this was such a short trip and I would need to get up early 2 days in a row, I made zero effort to adjust to the time change. We were in bed by 8:45PM California time!

Up next: the 2016 Never Land 5K!

That's so odd you could still have gotten your challenge bib. You would think they would have put a big X on it or something that said deferred. Maybe if they caught someone running with a deferred bib then they cancel the deferral?!? Yeah, I like going to the expos later and not worrying about official merchandise, I've never been at opening of an expo, but don't want to deal with that waiting & crowds of it that I've seen posted.

I have never used United we always fly southwest because of the free bags. That sucks though that your flights were changed. I'm glad you had great luck with the shuttle transportation though.

I really need to get out to Disneyland. I love the look of the Disneyland hotel.

It is much easier to get through the expo when you aren't worried about merchandise.

My mom and sister both got he Ariel shoes. I got Dumbo.

What's the reason you don't like tink? Being a guy she isn't a favorite or anything of course but she's okay in my eyes.

Looks like a great lunch and glad you got the wristlet with the discount after the line died down.

I love the room and the view isn't bad.

I love how the characters walk more freely at Disneyland. The 60th outfits and decor are great as well.

Can't wait to hear about the races.

Yay, a trip report! Following along!

Yeah, DD26 and I are also OVER the race merchandise. We were at Princess expo opening and while we just had minor issues (getting practically penned in while trying to move away from the tank top rack with my tanks), we decided we would rather not deal with the crowds and would rather spend our money elsewhere. For Marathon weekend I think we have decided to arrive Friday night or Saturday since we are only running on Sunday and just wing it with expo stuff.

I also HATE when United does that! They took away my seat and messed up my flight on a way home from WDW last year so I was not able to check my bags for Disney to take them to the airport for me because I didn't have a confirmed seat! I guess I am spoiled but I was super annoyed that I had to take my bag to Bell Services and get back early enough for ME to pick it up, then lug it to the airport.

I LOVE your room! Sorry it didn't have a great view. I have only stayed at the GC and it was awesome but soooo pricey! I'm glad to see that the Disneyland Hotel rooms are so nice!

What a nice daughter, buying your Mama something you hate, lol! It's cute, although I am not a Tink lover either. And I LOVE your Ariel shoes!

Yeah it seems like they should have done something like that! I wasn't going to take it or anything, I just was surprised to see they actually had it!
I have never used United we always fly southwest because of the free bags. That sucks though that your flights were changed. I'm glad you had great luck with the shuttle transportation though.
Exactly, the free bags are SO nice. The only reason I booked United for this trip was because I could get direct flights - and they took that away for my return trip! Ugh!

The shuttle was great, only cost me $34 round-trip!
I really need to get out to Disneyland. I love the look of the Disneyland hotel.
Yes you do!
It is much easier to get through the expo when you aren't worried about merchandise.
Yes it is - I have seen the light! :worship:
My mom and sister both got he Ariel shoes. I got Dumbo.
If I didn't get Ariel, I would have gone with Dumbo for sure.
What's the reason you don't like tink? Being a guy she isn't a favorite or anything of course but she's okay in my eyes.
She's so awful in Peter Pan! She tries to trick the Lost Boys into killing Wendy because she's jealous! I think it's funny that they've sort of given her an image overhaul in the newer movies (from what I hear, anyway). But I only know her from the Peter Pan version, she seems like kind of a jerk!
Looks like a great lunch and glad you got the wristlet with the discount after the line died down.
Solid lunch for sure.
I love the room and the view isn't bad.
Yeah, I mean - the view is what we paid for, so I can't really complain!
I love how the characters walk more freely at Disneyland. The 60th outfits and decor are great as well.
They really do, so different from WDW.
Can't wait to hear about the races.
:)
Yay, a trip report! Following along!
Yay, thanks!
Seriously, I am just OVER the official merch! I was perfectly satisfied with the race shirts this time! Princess sounded like worst of the worst, I'm glad you guys got out okay! :rotfl2:
I also HATE when United does that! They took away my seat and messed up my flight on a way home from WDW last year so I was not able to check my bags for Disney to take them to the airport for me because I didn't have a confirmed seat! I guess I am spoiled but I was super annoyed that I had to take my bag to Bell Services and get back early enough for ME to pick it up, then lug it to the airport.
Ugh, what is up with them?! That is so annoying that they did that to you. They oversold BOTH of my flights for this trip and I got my seats changed both times (different outcome on the way home though).

I just feel like all airlines are terrible and I go through this cycle of deciding "I will never fly XX airline again!" I was like that with United a few years ago and it's starting to come back...circle of life!
I LOVE your room! Sorry it didn't have a great view. I have only stayed at the GC and it was awesome but soooo pricey! I'm glad to see that the Disneyland Hotel rooms are so nice!
I thought the view was more funny than anything else - we paid for standard view and that is definitely what they gave us! :)

GC looks sooooo pretty, but I'm with you, not sure about the cost!!
What a nice daughter, buying your Mama something you hate, lol! It's cute, although I am not a Tink lover either. And I LOVE your Ariel shoes!
:teeth: I'm a keeper! I'm glad you feel me on Tink, I know I'm not alone!!\

I love the shoes too. So glad I got them!

Joining in and I'm so glad you are doing a full trip report. Can't wait to hear all about it although it will probably only encourage me further to consider this race for next year. ;)

I feel you on Tink. I really don't like the Peter Pan movie for a whole host of reasons. There are some really terrible themes in it. Not that it would stop me from doing this run though.

I also totally agree on the Expos. We've never really bought tons of merchandise anyway, but honestly, we end up wearing the race shirts more than any of the other shirts we buy. I would certainly not mess with waiting in those kinds of lines for anything.

The hotel room actually looks really nice although yeah, the view...

Ready to read more.

but this is such a huge pet peeve of mine - it’s a HALF marathon
ME too!! I always feel like a mean person when I think that, 1/2 is a challenging distance, BUT it is NOT a Marathon-which is Epic!!!

Look who was there! Goofy!
So you got some magical timing!!!

MAN was this strong
YES! Love a quality adult beverage-getting what you pay for!!

Your room, and particularly the bathroom looks lovely.

I'm guessing that what is "missing" from the 5k bib is Tinkerbell? ("... although I wouldn't say I was 'missing' it, Bob.") I had a friend training for a 5k and kept saying he was excited to do the marathon. It drove me nuts because words MEAN things, people!

Joining in and I'm so glad you are doing a full trip report. Can't wait to hear all about it although it will probably only encourage me further to consider this race for next year. ;)
Well, you will need to get a Coast-to-Coast medal at some point!
I feel you on Tink. I really don't like the Peter Pan movie for a whole host of reasons. There are some really terrible themes in it. Not that it would stop me from doing this run though.
YES, I agree! I'll just leave it at that!!
I also totally agree on the Expos. We've never really bought tons of merchandise anyway, but honestly, we end up wearing the race shirts more than any of the other shirts we buy. I would certainly not mess with waiting in those kinds of lines for anything.
I used to be allll about the merchandise, but I'm trying hard not to care anymore. It doesn't make the expo experience so much nicer! And it's not like Disney skimps on the race shirts.
The hotel room actually looks really nice although yeah, the view...

Ready to read more.
:p Room was definitely nice with lots of Disney touches. I got what I paid for with the view!!
ME too!! I always feel like a mean person when I think that, 1/2 is a challenging distance, BUT it is NOT a Marathon-which is Epic!!!
YES!! I mean, I'm sorry...but 26.2 miles is a different beast!
So you got some magical timing!!!
Yes! I love that about Disneyland, you never know when you'll run into a character...even in the hotel!
YES! Love a quality adult beverage-getting what you pay for!!
He did NOT skimp on the alcohol, that is for sure!!
Your room, and particularly the bathroom looks lovely.
Bathroom was so cute - I loved it!
I'm guessing that what is "missing" from the 5k bib is Tinkerbell? ("... although I wouldn't say I was 'missing' it, Bob.")
Nope, she's there (by the "5th anniversary" banner)...but excellent Office Space reference. ::yes::
I had a friend training for a 5k and kept saying he was excited to do the marathon. It drove me nuts because words MEAN things, people!
Yes, exactly!! A marathon is 26.2 miles. A 5K is not a marathon!

Another pet peeve (and this is me being REALLY nit-picky)..."FULL marathon." Sort of repetitive? Just me? :teeth:

Yay California!

Revelation #1: runDisney expos are much, much more enjoyable when you don’t care about the official merchandise. ::yes::

Totally with you on this. We always look at the official merchandise (and my sister usually gets something), but we don't go crazy over it and there's never really a "must have" item, so we just go later in the day. We've never had the expo horror stories that I hear from people who are heading into the official merchandise area right when it opens.

And she LOVES Tink (I have tried to explain to her why Tink is awful...she won’t listen to reason :headache:).

I have a confession to make: I love Tink. She's obnoxious, like me.
I hate the new Tink with the fairy friends and all that, though. Tinker Bell is not supposed to have fairy friends. She's supposed to be a brat who is mean to everyone except Peter Pan (and is even mean to him sometimes). I hate meeting her in the park and she's all nice (although last time I met her I got her to be mean by talking about Wendy, so that was good).
Okay. Felt good to say that.

I’d done my homework by trying on a pair of the Vazee Pace shoes at home to figure out sizing, so I was ready to buy a pair of the Ariel shoes!

Yay Ariel shoes!! I keep wondering if I should have gotten them in January, but they're so expensive (and by expensive I mean "more than $30" ... I'm cheap). Super cute, though!

Lemme say, I am SO glad I went to pick this thing up - I actually ended up wearing it a ton over the course of the weekend, because it was chilly in California! Why do temperatures in the 60s in California feel cold to me, but 60s in Ohio feels warm? Life is weird.

Maybe the weather was just trying to give you an excuse to wear your super cute new sweatshirt!

Stopped for a picture with Chipper on my way out!

Okay. Here's my question: Why do Chip and Dale meet separately at Disneyland, but they're always together at WDW?
I don't know why this bothers me, but it does. I'm fine with either way, but can't they just pick one?

(I'm going to sound like a crabby whiner, but this is such a huge pet peeve of mine - it’s a HALF marathon! There is no Tink Marathon!!!)

Is this the point where we get to complain about people who call every single race a marathon?
Don't get me wrong, a 5K is a huge accomplishment. It's not a marathon. A half marathon is not a marathon. A marathon is a marathon.
If you're going to have a runners menu, you really should get the race right...

And headed into the hotel. Look who was there! Goofy! On his way to open up Goofy’s Kitchen for dinner!

Yay Goofy!

5K outfit! Quiz time - anyone notice something missing from the 5K bib (besides my bib number, which I'd covered on purpose to post this picture to social media)?

I know the answer already ... (that's what I get for following along on the race thread)

We each bought a phone case from Roo Sport - I thought this was such a cool idea but ended up not loving running with it. It's supposed to be worn on the waistband but as you'll see in my pictures, I ended up carrying it because it never felt comfortable to me.

My sister has the Roo Sport pouch. It took her a while to get used to it, but she loves it now.
She doesn't put her phone in it, though - she wears her phone in a holster clipped to her waistband.
I think it's cute, but I can't imagine that it wouldn't bug the crap out of me.

Enjoying the report so far! I like your approach regarding merchandise at the expo. Although I have never been able to make it over to the expo on the first day for any Run Disney race, I have no desire to deal with the crowds and craziness of trying to find merchandise. I have always tried to think that if it wasn't there or out of my size, then it wasn't mean to be. It was crazy enough trying to move around people the 2nd day of this past Princess expo. Glad I didn't get caught up in the craziness that was apparently the first day!

Ok, I have to take a break from reading this report to mention this. I have been singing the Tiki Bird song wrong my entire life.
I've been saying "Where the birds sing words and the flowers BLOOM" for literally forever. I've taught it to my daughter. I only now noticed that it's CROON!!! when looking at the pictured of that shirt you posted. I feel shame and may need to turn in my disney liscence.

Also it always amazes me how small the castle is at DL every time, even though I know the difference and I've been there.

First: I hate flights that get changed. Just hate that so much and hate having to figure it out. Totally messed up my first day at WDW this year. Next vacation I am making a flight day with zero other plans even if it means wasting a vacation day.
Second: I loooooove those Ariel shoes. I wear Brooks Ghost 7's that I always think have kind of a Tink or Buzz Lightyear thing going on with them (they are white with lime green and a lil purple), but I've been eye-balling the Ghost 8's for my next pair and in my head they are kind of Ariel-ish. Because all things need to be Disney even if they aren't, right? I'm hijacking your TR to make you look at my shoes now...
3185026-p-MULTIVIEW.jpg

Do you see it? With the red and the blue (hair and water)? I'm kind of digging them and am thiiiiis close to going to try them on.
THIRD) I am totally jealous of you getting to stay at the DL hotel and spend time at Trader Sam's. That looks so fun. Are you getting so excited for the counter-part in Florida when you get to go to the Poly later this year? The next time we go to WDW if we don't do the BLT again we want to do the Poly.
Fourth) Those look like the most comfortable "not-jeans" ever. I kind of am tempted just to keep them on hand for any long road trips or flights.

Looking forward to more...

Huh. You are right. There is a little Tink on it. After obsessively looking at your picture (I swear I see umbrellas when I close my eyes) I'm going to change my answer to no corral? Or is the corral just covered by your sleeve and I'm on the total wrong tangent?!
My sister has a Roo pouch and she even wears it to the grocery store and stuff instead of a purse. Shew loves it. I think it would get sweaty and gross that I never really looked into it. I use the running belts mostly but honestly I'm not a fan of those either.

Yay California!
Yaaayyyy!!
Totally with you on this. We always look at the official merchandise (and my sister usually gets something), but we don't go crazy over it and there's never really a "must have" item, so we just go later in the day. We've never had the expo horror stories that I hear from people who are heading into the official merchandise area right when it opens.
Yeah, I went back and looked later, but I wasn't as maniacal about it as I have been in the past! It was so relaxing and nice!
Well, I don't think you're obnoxious. :teeth: You're allowed to like her! I agree that it's weird that she has fairy friends. They were playing some clips of the movie before the 10K and the fairies were fixing a boat or something and I kept wondering why they needed the boat - can't they fly?? I don't get the fairy thing.
Yay Ariel shoes!! I keep wondering if I should have gotten them in January, but they're so expensive (and by expensive I mean "more than $30" ... I'm cheap). Super cute, though!
They ARE expensive!
Maybe the weather was just trying to give you an excuse to wear your super cute new sweatshirt!
Yes, that's it! Disney Magic! :wizard:
Okay. Here's my question: Why do Chip and Dale meet separately at Disneyland, but they're always together at WDW?
I don't know why this bothers me, but it does. I'm fine with either way, but can't they just pick one?
Ya know...that's a good question!! Aren't they always supposed to be a pair?? :scratchin
Is this the point where we get to complain about people who call every single race a marathon?
Don't get me wrong, a 5K is a huge accomplishment. It's not a marathon. A half marathon is not a marathon. A marathon is a marathon.
If you're going to have a runners menu, you really should get the race right...
YES!! I so agree with this! I have heard people refer to "the 5K marathon" - no! It's a 5K! Or a marathon! Not both!!
Yay Goofy!
Yay! We're buddies.
I know the answer already ... (that's what I get for following along on the race thread)
Yep, yep!!
My sister has the Roo Sport pouch. It took her a while to get used to it, but she loves it now.
She doesn't put her phone in it, though - she wears her phone in a holster clipped to her waistband.
I think it's cute, but I can't imagine that it wouldn't bug the crap out of me.
The sole reason both of us got them was to hold our phones. My mom thought it worked really well, but mine bounced around a lot. :confused3 Of course, that's what I get for breaking the whole "nothing new on race day" rule!
Enjoying the report so far! I like your approach regarding merchandise at the expo. Although I have never been able to make it over to the expo on the first day for any Run Disney race, I have no desire to deal with the crowds and craziness of trying to find merchandise. Glad I didn't get caught up in the craziness that was apparently the first day!
Yeah, I just don't think that the craziness is worth it anymore! I have sooooo many t-shirt and whatnot already, so I really don't *need* any more of this stuff!

SAME, to all of this!! I saw the words on the shirt and was just like, "...wait, what?!" Then I went to the Tiki Room later in the trip and listened a little more closely...yep, the flower do, in fact, BLOOM. :faint:

That castle sure is tiny...she is sooooo pretty though!! :lovestruc
First: I hate flights that get changed. Just hate that so much and hate having to figure it out. Totally messed up my first day at WDW this year. Next vacation I am making a flight day with zero other plans even if it means wasting a vacation day.
The friggin worst. I mean, I know we "sign" a contract saying that they can change, but it doesn't seem right!!
Do you see it? With the red and the blue (hair and water)? I'm kind of digging them and am thiiiiis close to going to try them on.
::yes:: I see it! And I get it - I had an older Garmin that I really liked because, as Mr. Ariel484 point out, it was Buzz Lightyear colors!! Behold this giant picture that I cannot re-size:
Forerunner210_HR_025.2.jpg

I'm also a Brooks gal for running, so I brought these purely for "walking around" in and whatnot. :)
Yeah, staying at the DL Hotel was sort of a "treat yoself" moment for me. :teeth: That was my only Trader Sam's visit, though! I maybe shouldn't admit this on the DL board, but I will anyway: I like the WDW counterpart better. More effects and whatnot. Definitely excited to go there!!
Fourth) Those look like the most comfortable "not-jeans" ever. I kind of am tempted just to keep them on hand for any long road trips or flights.

Looking forward to more...
OMG, they are!! I love them so much, they were so great for travel days!
Huh. You are right. There is a little Tink on it. After obsessively looking at your picture (I swear I see umbrellas when I close my eyes) I'm going to change my answer to no corral? Or is the corral just covered by your sleeve and I'm on the total wrong tangent?!
