Don't think this thread is a duplicate is it? The other thread says the exchange rate has hit $1.60, not fairfx.

Great rate, but im still sticking by my prediction of $1.65 - $1.70 by August, when we can get our fairfx card! :thumbsup2

Pay day today so I have just put $80 (£50 worth) on my card while the rate is good.

What is the Fairfax card?

It's a pre-pay Mastercard that is accepted anywhere a normal Mastercard is accepted. It works in the same way as a PAYG mobile works in that you 'top-up' with credit and then the money is deducted from the card when you buy something. The beauty of it is though that you 'lock' the rate when you top up. So for example I have just added £50 worth of dollars onto my card at a rate of $1.60:£1 which gave me $80. Even if the rate was to drop on Monday to $1.50:£1 I would still have that $80 on my card so I would be better off. On the other hand if the rate goes up to $1.70 I am slightly worse off than if I had waited.

As well as using it as a credit card you can also withdraw money from cash machines but there is a $2 charge for doing so.

The card is issued and backed by Newcastle Building Society so your money is relatively safe.

You can get more info at www.fairfx.com

Hi, does anyone know the max amout you can withdraw for $2?
I was going to get some currency to take with us aswell, but at the rate fairfx is offering, it's probably better to just load my card and withdraw the cash over there! Travelex was offering $1.5575 today, and M&S $1,5443. Big difference!!

Hi, does anyone know the max amout you can withdraw for $2?

I withdrew cash in Walgreens and you could go up to $400,please bear in mind wherever you draw cash from Fairfx will charge you $2,but the cash machine will also charge you-Walgreens in my case was also $2-so $4 total(but it will ask you if you wish to continue with the transaction).
Personally i would always take a little cash with you to start with :thumbsup2.

I,along with David(wickesy)+others highly recommend this card, apart from the withdrawl(spell?)charges there are no other charges with this card. You can use it for something large or as little as the price of an 8 pack of Mountain Dew-yum :thumbsup2.x.

Thanks for that advise:thumbsup2 I have some cash left from our last visit, (shock horror!!!):scared1:but if I were to withdraw $400, and be charged $4; that's still only a $ per 100, and the difference between the fairfx rate and the others is more than that. Or am I completely barking:confused3 Could be too much sun!:)

Also, as said before on here a few times, it often doesn't even charge you the $2. I've used the card in the UK quite a few times to withdraw money and have never been charged. I know people have posted on the dis about not being charged either. :D

You should always assume you will be charged, but you may not be. :D

No probs :thumbsup2,i always withdrew the full amunt so it worked out cheaper than withdrawing smaller amounts.
I was also shocked to come home last month with aprox $600 :scared1: .x.

This sounds better than The Post Office card and Nationwide. I am serriously thinking of getting one of these. Are there any drawbacks apart from the withdrawal charge?:confused3

Only that you have to look after it because if you lose it or it is stolen you will have to cancel the card and be left with no access to your money while you are abroad. The way around that one is to get a second card and the balance can then be transferred from the lost/stolen one to the 'backup'.

Also you will either have to keep track of the balance left on the card by noting it down on a piece of paper or make sure you have internet access so you can check it - personally keeping the receipts and totting them up at the end of the day works for us.

I pretty much say the same as David when it comes to these cards :thumbsup2.I had 2 cards, one with the majority of our money on+another with about $100 on,which we kept in the safe at reception. So unfortunatley if our main one was to get lost or stolen,we had another to transfer funds over to :thumbsup2.

I did'nt pay for Net Access, just kept every receipt no matter how small the transaction was for the day,and added them all up in the evening+deducted from the amount which was on my card to start with, only took 5-10mins out of my evening-no hardship.x.

You don't need to keep receipts or add things up. I would get it totally wrong if I did that! lol

Text 'Fair bal (last 4 digits on your fairfx card)' to 60040. It'll tell you your balance.

You can also top up on this number by texting 'fair (amount of dollars you want, eg 50) USD' to the same number.

Thanks for that, I wasn't sure if that was up and running yet. :thumbsup2
