Fair Price For House Sitting/Pet Sitting?

What's the going rate for house sitting? We don't really have any family members that have enough spare time to be bothered feeding our cats twice per day, so I'd really rather just pay a house-sitter. Surely we can find a teenager whose parents we know and we can trust him or her?

What's a fair price? $10 per day? $20 per day?

We're in NJ and pay a vet tech $65 per night to stay with our dog. It's cheaper than boarding and much easier on all of us.

I think for cat caring that doesn't require walking and actually staying at your house you could get away with 1/2 that or may be less.

We have a teenage girl across the street who feeds our cats and fish twice a day for $15. She raises and lowers the blinds and plays with the cats too. She's thrilled because we travel around 60 nights a year.

You will receive a wide range on answers here. We have traded pet care favors with friends so it costs us nothing, but I am sure you will find somewhere here on the Dis that will say they would never pay less than 200 a week to a teenager to come stay at their house for a week.

Are you looking for someone to come by twice a day to feed pets, or to stay and give additional care? For a neighborhood teen to stop by and feed a pet or scoop a box once or twice a day, I think 10 a day is fine.

When you say "house sitting"... Staying over, or just coming over twice a day to feed the cats? For a teen to just visit briefly twice a day, I could see paying $20/day. To stay over, I'd feel like I had to give more than that.

We're too paranoid (I guess!) to have a teen do this sort of thing. When we're away, we have a service (insured/bonded) and they charge $100 per day to stay overnight with our two nutty dogs, and visit twice per day (let the dogs in the yard, feed them, clean up after them, etc.). In this area, that's standard, as nutty as it sounds.

I have three dogs, and I pay $20 a day for two teens (brother and sister) to come and live in my house and look after the dogs when I am away. They also have the use of my car. They are very good and reliable (I know their parents well).

One of my older DD best friends comes and stays with our dog when we go out of town. She and the dog adore each other and the friend would do it for free if I'd let her. (we have the no, you're family argument every time). I pay (force her to take) $25 a day + bonus $25 and a gift from where we went. Cats are fairly low maintenance, I'd say if they live in the neighborhood $10 a day + tip or token gift would be fine.

If they are just coming over to play for 30 minutes, check the house, feed our dogs, and leave it is $20 a visit I think. It may be $15. We don't really use that service. Overnight we pay $80 for 1 dog and $100 for both. Overnight includes 2 stop ins during business hours and then overnight someone stays over. These are through professional companies that are licensed and insured so they provide a little sense of security. I think we paid friends 50 to do it but the care isn't nearly as good as through the service.
