Factoring DVC into retirement

Dean, the rental business you mentioned doesn't really exist anymore. The websites that I used to use are littered with RCI exchanges for prices I could not afford to try to match. When a two bedroom BCV is listed for $1500 for 7
Nights... Well you get the idea.

The first thing you need in retirement is security. The last thing you should have is something you don't need. I agree to wait until your plans are more settled before buying more points. BUT if the OP has enough discretionary cash then DVC is sure a fun product to own, especially purchased on the resale market.
That has not been my experience. As a minimum, one could rent through David's site for $10 a point and on this site among others. However, the point was to discourage adding on extra points now for much later in life, not to encourage buying to rent. IMO, even in the best of times, owning to rent makes no sense financially.

I used to rent my points out for way more than that!!! In the olden days before RCI, BCV was such a commodity that if I had 5,000 BCV points it wouldn't have been enough. I would get about 10 inquiries a day asking for the BCV. Now I don't get even a nibble.

I am going to use my points going forward. Longer vacations and bigger villas are in my future. I already have two 2 bedroom villas reserved for November and December. Plus I will have points to bank. I am going to continue to use my points for family vacations but the problem is nobody has enough vacation or $$ for airfare.

As I stated, that has not been my experience. I'm routinely at or just over $13 a point and have had no problems. I haven't rented here in a long time and never did that much, I feel DIS is too much into social engineering as it relates to controlling rentals.

Without a doubt we plan on using our points vice renting, For us DVC is an investment in our relaxation.

Using myself as an example, we had 450 points, 150 at OKW, 200 at AKV, and 100 at VGC. I had thought about buying more so that my four kids could divide and share them eventually. I wanted each of them to have at least 150. I found out this past Aug. that I have stage 4 colon cancer which is incurable, and I don't have much time.

Sending lots of pixiedust your way, dclfun! :tink: ~*+~*+~*+~ :tink:

For us, we now use our DVC pts indirectly in our retirement plans. We use our DVC stays as our home base to visit 55+ communities near WDW.

We look at the homes/models, meet with residents, visit surrounding neighborhoods, check out the health facilities, etc...If we purchase & retire to one of these communities, I will try to still keep our 210 pts to vacation other places.

We have 500 points that we'll use for long stays to get away from the winter, but when we bought and added on, we did it for our current use and enjoyment. Who knows what the future holds?

Retirement was never a big factor in our DVC plans. We have always planned to move/retire to Florida. At that point, our points will be used for short trips to WDW or to take our grandchildren (hopefully) and then transfer the points to our kids - if they want them.
