Facebook question - hiding friends?

I have yet another Facebook question.

Everytime I get an update that involves a game, etc., I choose the option to hide the application rather than hiding the friend. My question is what happens if you click the option to hide the friend? Do you no longer receive their updates, etc.? What are reasons someone would want to "hide" a friend? Just curious and trying to understand how this works.

Yes, when you hide the friend, they no longer appear in your news feed. You can still choose to go to their profile to read their updates.

I hide tons of people. My reasons are usually because they're constantly posting game things or engaging in some type of political or religious ranting. Some people I've hidden because they're spouting some sort of drama. Mostly I hide them because of the games though.

Thanks for the quick response. There is certainly one person I would want to hide from my newsfeed. If I hide a friend, is there an option to "unhide" a friend if I later want that person back in my newsfeed?

I have my sister-in-law and BIL hidden. They are always posting political crap and I just get tired of reading it.

Yes, you just go down to the bottom of your news feed where it says "edit options."

I have about 40 high school "friends" hidden on my feed. I'm not really sure why these people are so into collecting old high school classmates that they barely knew, but I'm playing along. It's fun to see what they're up to, but I'm just not interested in seeing them regularly on my feed. I'm guessing they feel the same thing about me.

I haven't figured out yet how to let things go over my feed and not go to them yet, so I'm hoping they have me hidden as well. I've tried to keep everything from going over my feed and have all my privacy settings set (I think) but my sister tells me she gets stuff (like who I've become friends with) on her feed about me - so I haven't been successful.

I hide friends who just update too much each day. Especially if all they are posting is every tiny detail about their toddler's life. Bo-ring. Don't need it cluttering up my feed!

I just wish I could hid the game crap...I don't care to know that you just spent 30 mins gathering animals or one is out of the barn!

As far as I can tell, with the "new" FB, there is no way to hide that stuff from showing up in the newsfeed of friends.

You can hide games (and I do) or hide the entire person...no in between. :headache:

You can. When something like that shows up in your newsfeed, mouse over to the right and it will say "hide" or something like that. Then another box will come up and you can either hide the entire person or just the game. :)

You can block the application so that the game notices never show up on your news feed. You have to run your mouse over the top right corner of the game notice to find the drop down and select "block application". That way, you can still see your friends status updates, but not their game updates.

Right, but it's a neverending job. The more games you block, the more new ones crop up.

Thank you it worked! You have made my day:thumbsup2

You can't, as far as I know. If people want to hide the stuff you post, they have to do it. You can't hide it from them.

You can control the information that others see in your privacy settings. You can control it for one individual or you can put a bunch of people into a group and control the settings for the entire group [such as classmates].

From Facebook help on this subject ~ It appears you can create a list of friends that you want to have Limitations on what they can view on your pages.............

To add someone to your Limited Profile list, follow the steps below:

1. Select "All Friends" from the Friends drop-down menu.
2. Click on the "Limited Profile" Friend List in the left sidebar. If you do not see a "Limited Profile" friend list in this section, you can create one by clicking the "Make a New List" button and then naming the list.
3. Type your friend’s name into the "Add to List" field. You must be friends with a person to add him or her to the Limited Profile list.

To prevent users on this list from seeing certain content, please follow the steps below:

1. Click the "Privacy Settings" option in the Settings drop-down menu at the top of any Facebook page.
2. Go to the Profile section.
3. Select any Profile privacy setting and click "Edit Custom Settings."
4. Enter the name of your limited profile friend list in the "Except These People" section to restrict these users from viewing the profile content you selected.

Actually, you can. When you go to post, there is a little lock in the right hand bottom corner. Click on it and you can set privacy to whoever you want seeing it. I think you can make it permanent in your privacy settings at the top of your page.

I wish that my game threads were only seen by those friends of mine playing the games.

I hate getting crap from games I don't play so I can only imagine my friends must feel the same way.

I play farmville and I'm sure my non-farmville friends don't want to see my posts. So I saw on the farmville thread that you can click the lock and choose to hide the postings from certain people. What I did was take my friends list and designate each farmville or non-farmville. When I publish a farmville post, I click the lock and pick to hide it from non-farmville.

Yeah, I'm not getting Facebook at all. My sister is really into it, collecting all the friends she ever knew from elementary school through college and then some. Plus, she plays all those stupid games and I couldn't care less about her farm or her aquarium. I have about 11 friends and most of those are family.
