So I asked all the kids and for once, they're clueless! :rotfl2::rotfl:

And someone here always seems to know the answer to every question anyone asks!

When I send a Private Message on FB, sometimes I'll get notified that the message was seen / read. It looks like this, in very faint, light print:

First, there's a check mark, followed by: Seen 12:08am

But, sometimes I don't get that notification, and yet the person will talk about the message later in person, or on the phone. Strange, or not???

Is it their setting that hides they've read it? I've looked for something in settings that will hide / or show that, but I can't find anything.

Anyone know? TIA :goodvibes

I think it only happens when you are online. If you are not logged in actively then it doesn't happen

If you have a smart phone and the FB app is open, it can also show that the message has been seen, when in reality it has not.

I get email notification of Facebook messages so sometimes I read them through there instead.

Thanks all for your replies.

For pyrxtc - I think you know what I mean ---

I'm trying to figure out why I'm sometimes told by FB that my message has been seen, and sometimes I'm not...?

Sometimes the chat window will pop up but I don't click on it, I just x it closed. I read it but facebook does not recognize it as read because I never clicked on it or opened it myself.

I was going to say the same thing. I have Facebook settings that send copies of the messages to my email account. That lets me view it in email without going onto Facebook at all. That's probably why they are marked as "unread." Reading the email copy doesn't flag the Facebook message as "read."

Plus, Facebook's viewed/not viewed is flaky. If you use multiple devices (smartphone, tablet, computer) it can flag something as already read when you haven't opened the item or vice-versa: shows as unread when you've looked at it several times.

Timing is also an issue: I think if you open an item very briefly (<10 secs,) Facebook doesn't consider it "read."

THanks, maybe that's it.

I'm just very curious about a message I sent to a 'friend' :) --- and it doesn't say it has been 'seen' --- when I'm almost sure she HAS seen it --- ?? :rolleyes2
