Hi,
DD is having a backyard circus theme birthday party. My niece and her friend are willing to paint the kids' faces. My problem is that i can't find just normal face paint anywhere (Michaels, Wal-Mart, JoAnn's, Target, etc.). Zany Brainy used to sell it, but they no longer exist around here. I found a recipe online using cold cream, corn starch, food coloring (and something else I can't remember right now) but frankly, I'd rather just buy some than spend that time making up different colors, finding containers for it, etc. The Halloween make-up stuff is extremely greasy and has warnings all over it about touching clothing, etc. It also comes in very small containers and limited colors (black, red, white).

What have some of you used for face paint? I have a feeling that all those fairs and festivals probably just used regular old water based crayola.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Not sure what you could use. My sister and I never had our faces painted a kids, we would break out from the stuff.

This may sound strange, but have you tried Borders bookstore? Our Borders has a whole section of crafts and I seem to remember that they had face paint. Barnes and Noble has the same thing in the kids section, I believe.

What about using water colors type paint?

Also be sure to ask the parents before you paint thier child. I know my DD would get horrible rashes when they did face painting at preschool, I finally had to tell them (and her) that she could not have her face painted.

Thanks for the idea about Borders. I will try to get there this weekend. I put that we were face painting in the invitation so parents would know. That probably sealed my fate that I would NOT be able to find some:rolleyes:

I've been considering face painting at my DD's upcoming birthday party. We went to WDW in September and she got her face painted 3 times because she liked it so much. I wish I could find something like that. It took a while to set/dry, which I would imagine was hindered by the humidity, but once it was dry, it lasted really well. In fact, the first time she had it done, DD even fell asleep before I could wash it off so she napped with it on and none transferred to the pillow case - much to my relief.

I also checked the Halloween make-up packaging thinking that might be a good alternative. However, after reading the warnings, I'm definitely hesitant to use it although I bought some to test on DD before we her birthday. I've thought about trying one of the more higher end toy stores to see if this is something they might carry.

Please post if you do find something that would work. Friends have used water paints and it's my back-up plan but it isn't as opaque so wouldn't show up as much on DD as did the thicker paint used at WDW.

We have stores named Hobby Lobby (like Michaels) here that carries it, but you probably don't have one near you.

The only other place I've found them was at a costume store. This place has professional quality costumes, party supplies, carnival supplies like cotton candy supplies etc.

If you have a store like that, you might want to give them a call.

You can use the little bottles of Folk Art or Ceramacoat or Apple Barrel paints that are found at Michaels, Hobby Lobby, etc.
They dry fairly quickly and are easily wiped off with soap and water. There are many colors and they are fairly inexpensive.

I use Watercolor Pencils - just dip the pencils in water & color away. The pencils make it easier doing the fine details too. I know Crayola has some.

I used to do this as a kid to pretend I had tatoos. Now my DD loves doing the same thing!

My son and his friends "paint up" for their college football games, and they use paint they buy in the craft section at WalMart. He has somewhat sensitive skin, and it doesn't cause any problems. He washes it off in the shower.

I love the face paint that our Childrens Museum has set out for the kids. Lucky me, they sell it in the gift shop! They are watersoluble crayons. You just get the crayons wet and then write on your skin. They dry completely and don't rub off. They come off easiy with water. We love them. This brand is Carand'ache of Switzerland, but probably any water soluble crayon sold in an art store would work. They don't actually say that they are meant to be for skin. You do have to keep getting the end wet as you draw, but they really work well. DS has sensative skin and he has had no trouble with these.

I hope you find what you are looking for!

Thanks so much for the replies and ideas. Guess how I will be spending part of my weekend!

There's a brand that Zany Brainy used to sell before they went out of business -- Klutz. They made all kinds of little "kits" -- face paint, how to juggle, necklace kits, nail art, etc. My daughter has the face paint and it works really well. Like I said, we got ours at Zainy Brainy but I just saw it at Barnes and NOble not too long ag.

My friend is the art teacher at DD's school. She does all my face painting for me. She just mixes up Tempra paint with a little dish soap (for easy removal) and away she goes. Super duper cheap!

When my DD was about 5 she got her face painted at a B-day party. She had a reaction to the paint and her face was red and puffed for days after.

Years ago I was a party clown (really!) We used just plain old kids paints in the trays. Washes of really easy. No, it's not the quality of those booths at the fair but it's cheap. You can also find face painting books that include the paints and some ideas at Michaels, at toy stores and at book stores. There are tons of halloween supplies in the stores right now and a huge variety of face paints on the shelves. They are pretty cheap too.
