FAA makes Disney a no fly zone.

I believe they have been a no zone before and this doesn't surprise me with the amount of drones out there now.

Too bad this won't prevent the "Jesus Saves" air writers.

Or maybe it will. Depends on the airspace I guess.

This is just an update to an existing TFR. It is nothing new. A similar TFR exists for all major sporting events, including but not limited to NFL, NCAA, MLB, Racing, etc. Here is the full text of the DISNEYWORLD TFR:

"FDC 4/3634 ZJX SPECIAL SECURITY NOTICE. DISNEY WORLD THEME PARK, ORLANDO FL. THIS NOTAM REPLACES NOTAM 9/4985 TO REFLECT A TSA WEBSITE UPDATE AND ADDITIONAL INFORMATION CONCERNING AIRSPACE WAIVERS. FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS IN THIS NOTAM COMPLY WITH STATUTORY MANDATES DETAILED IN SECTION 352 OF PUBLIC LAW 108-7 AS AMENDED BY SECTION 521 OF PUBLIC LAW 108-199. PURSUANT TO 49 USC 40103(B), THE FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA) CLASSIFIES THE AIRSPACE DEFINED IN THIS NOTAM AS 'NATIONAL DEFENSE AIRSPACE'. ANY PERSON WHO KNOWINGLY OR WILLFULLY VIOLATES THE RULES PERTAINING TO OPERATIONS IN THIS AIRSPACE MAY BE SUBJECT TO CERTAIN CRIMINAL PENALTIES UNDER 49 USC 46307. PILOTS WHO DO NOT ADHERE TO THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURES MAY BE INTERCEPTED, DETAINED AND INTERVIEWED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT/SECURITY PERSONNEL. PURSUANT TO 14 CFR SECTION 99.7, SPECIAL SECURITY INSTRUCTIONS; ALL AIRCRAFT FLIGHT OPERATIONS, INCLUDING UNMANNED AND REMOTE CONTROLLED AIRCRAFT, ARE PROHIBITED WITHIN A 3 NMR OF 282445N/0813420W OR THE ORL238014.8 UP TO AND INCLUDING 3000 FT AGL. THE RESTRICTIONS DO NOT APPLY TO THOSE AIRCRAFT AUTHORIZED BY AND IN CONTACT WITH ATC FOR OPERATIONAL OR SAFETY OF FLIGHT PURPOSES, DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND AIR AMBULANCE FLIGHT OPERATIONS. FLIGHTS CONDUCTED FOR OPERATIONAL PURPOSES OF ANY DISNEY WORLD EVENT AND VENUE ARE AUTHORIZED WITH AN APPROVED WAIVER. AN FAA AIRSPACE WAIVER DOES NOT RELIEVE OPERATORS FROM OBTAINING ALL OTHER NECESSARY AUTHORIZATIONS AND COMPLYING WITH ALL APPLICABLE FEDERAL AVIATION REGULATIONS. ALL PREVIOUSLY ISSUED WAIVERS TO FDC NOTAM 4/4985 REMAIN VALID UNTIL THE SPECIFIED END DATE BUT NOT TO EXCEED 90 DAYS FOLLOWING THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THIS NOTAM."

This seems to be a positive move, perhaps preventing some of the wacky banner planes. Disney friendly, only requring waivers.

It won't. The ban is for 3000 feet and they sky write at about 10,000 feet and they are not over Disney property.

I imagine this is more about drones (a big issues in many places right now), helicopter tours (we've seen more and more of this at Disney) and the advertising banner planes.

Considering the potential for terrorist threats on the happy place, no surprise this is permanent now.

I wonder if this is intended to prevent helicopter fly overs for independent website construction updates on new attractions?

No. As I said above, this is ONLY an update of a TFR that has been in effect for a long time. I think the only change is the language about drones. It's a safety concern. The FAA does not issue rules to prevent industrial spying. Nor can a company request a no-fly rule be promulgated without a good (read national security) reason (or for airshows, etc).

Weren't drones banned by the FAA a couple months ago? I thought they could only be flown in certain places in Alaska and one other state for testing until the FAA could make rules for their use.

Too bad this won't prevent the "Jesus Saves" air writers . . .

IMHO . . .
1) Now, now, now.
2) Let us not be so quick to judge.
3) There are LOTS of folks who like the skywriting.
4) After all, some don't like "small world", yet this isn't condemned.
5) Fortunately, one does not need to view the skywriting.

So this is odd......

it is defined as a cylinder shaped zone centered over Bay Lake with a 3nm radius.

So MK is well protected from low flying air traffic.
EPCOT is just inside the radius.
AK and DS are just inside at the edge.

You can fly pretty darn close to 2 of the parks.

And when you view the Aviation Sectional Chart, the drawing is so poor that you could interpret that DS and/or AK are outside the zone.

I disagree completely. Most folks hate the skywriting. I wish they would ban it.

I know I'm at disney when I see it :thumbsup2...we're normally in the contemporary pool...its just another attraction..that thankfully I don't need a bleeding fastpass for.
:beach:

I am curious what made them decide to do this.
I guess there will be no more air planes in the sky doing "Jesus Loves you"
designs.

Do not mention the "J" word, I repeat, DO NOT MENTION THE "J" WORD!

Back away, back away

I'm a Jedi, are you allowed to mention worshipping that J word or is that off limits too?

It's a real religion.

Even though technically now Jedi is Disney since Disney bought Lucasfilm.

I love seeing the sky writing, in fact everyone I saw when we were there stop to take pictures. If something so little inspires and makes so many feel good, Why would you want to take that away? Selfish, is all I can think of.

I don't think it's selfish to expect that I can enjoy my vacation without being exposed to propaganda (unauthorized advertising).
I came to Disney to see Disney, not to see other organizations illegally advertise.
If Disney wants to do their own skywriting, then fine, I'm sure that will be nice and in the true Disney spirit, aka friendly to all.

You're kidding, right? You came to Central Florida and were hoping not to see any propaganda during your vacation? The mind boggles...

There is nothing illegal about it. I'm not saying I support it, but it is not illegal. In any way.

I must say I was surprised by the skywriting the first time I experienced it, but it is amazing to me that it bothers some people so much. I'd much rather have the skywriting than billboards, because the skywriting goes away after a very short time. You have to pass billboards every day. But in neither case is anyone forcing you to look at the skywriting or the billboards.

I'm using the term propaganda to refer to a specific type of message that isn't always appealing to everyone. I'd be more specific but we're not permitted to discuss that kind of thing on these boards. I didn't come to Central Florida with expectations of not viewing any advertising, but I DID pay thousands of dollars to be immersed in a Disney-friendly environment, one that I should trust would be friendly to all patrons. What everyone chooses to do on Sunday is their own business, but I'm not happy about having it inserted into my vacation. I don't personally see a vacation as a time for theological discussion, but for those with curious children, it's going to be, whether they like it or not. It's shortsighted and rude to assume everyone will enjoy something that could be controversial. That's why businesses usually choose to screen their advertising.

Illegal in the terms of Disney, or more specifically, in the terms of following the rules. Illegal in the sense that one usually needs to pay for advertising on another's property. Flying over and advertising "above" someone's property is shady, cheap, and deliberately circumventing that organization's established advertising model. If I'm declined as a vendor at a festival, renting a plane and flying over it to advertise is lame. It's going around the system.

Billboards are OUTSIDE the parks. In a designated advertising space.

Regardless, the update isn't going to prevent it, so for the meantime, these advertisers are free to force their message into my vacation, whether I want them to or not.
