My lower eyelid has recently started twitching. It was only happening in the morning (weekday mornings), but I can see that it is doing it right now. It is becomming annoying.

I have been under a tremendous amount of stress at work lately. I really need a vacation - but have to wait until the middle of August.

I recently underwent two MRIs of the brain due to some unrelated issues, and both came back clear for MS or lesions.

Any ideas how to make this stop?

I have had that happen when I am both stressed out AND exhausted. Are you getting any sleep? Try to squeeze in a nap if you can.

The most common causes are fatigue, stress, and caffeine. It happens to me too and it is so annoying. The good thing is it eventually stops. Sometimes it has lasted a few days.

Get more sleep.
Drink less caffeine.
Lubricate your eyes with eye drops.

My mom and I both have this happen to us every so often. It is annoying, I hear ya! But at least for me, it goes away after a few minutes.

Are you using a new moisturizer or eye cream? I used Olay Regenerist Lifting Serum and it made my eyelid twitch. I guess what ever was supposed to make it "lift' made it twitch instead. :confused3

Eye Twitching - When to see a doctor:

By Mayo Clinic staff.

Eye twitch usually goes away on its own within a few days or months. Schedule an appointment with your doctor if:

The twitching doesn't go away within one to three weeks.
Your eyelid completely closes with each twitch.
Twitching happens in other parts of your face as well.
Your eye is red, swollen or has discharge, or you notice drooping eyelids.

Happens to me when I am stressed to the limit. It's my body's way of saying stop and take a breath. If you can't go on vacation right now- take a little breather. Relax this weekend.

Keep an eye on this. This is how my Blepharospasm stated. Just a minor twitch occassionally then it got to where is was all the time. I only have it in one eye (thankfully), but it took doctor's 7 years to diagnose it. Everyone kept saying it was stress. I kept telling them that it did not happen when I ws under the most stress. It would happen when I was completely relaxed.

I now get Botox injections every 4 months to control this. I was on medication for a couple years until it no longer controlled it. When I first started on Botox it was every 6 months. It has only been within the last year that it has gone to every 4 months. Blepharospasm is a form of Parkinson's, which is hereditary. My grandmother had Parkinson's.

Keep an eye on this.

Thank you for the inadvertent chuckle, and for your personal experience. You must have been very frustrated to be misdiagnosed for so long. Will the Botox permanently lessen the severity of your symptoms?

I get twitches all over the place! My head, temples, eyes, legs, feet...a lot of times I notice my legs or feet twitch when I am relaxed or my leg or foot is flexed. The only way I can explain what it feels like is that it kinda feels like the flutter of a baby kicking when you are pregnant. I have had them as long as I can remember. Sometimes I'll get one in my foot that makes my toes move lol.

I know it's annoying! Wish I could help!

what she said! :thumbsup2

Try magnesium supplements. I had the same thing a while back and the mag helped. And as a bonus, it helps with restless leg syndrome too!

I, too, have had it happen when I am under a ton of stress and exhausted. Taking a "me" weekend helped tremendously. I didn't worry about the housework, slept in on Saturday morning, got my nails done and had my husband take me out to dinner. Worked like a charm.

I didn't even realize what I was typing at the time.

Unfortunately the Botox will not permanently lessen the severity. Eventually it will stop working or totally paralize the muscles/nerves in the area. The only permanent solution is surgery to remove some or all of the muscles related to eyelid closure. I am putting this off as long as I possibly can. I did the same with the Botox. I was on medication for 2 1/2 years before I agreed to the Botox.

I had spasms in both eyelids, upper and lower, both eyes!

I had botox. Was a GREAT thing :)

I had it done twice, about 6 months apart.Haven't had to do it since (that was about 3 years ago).

I still get twitches once in a while, but nothing like before the botox.

i too get them all over...normally after i drink pop- esp. dark pop. i don't drink it a lot and as soon as i do, twitch twitch!

If you are taking a statin drug like Lipitor, Zocor, simvistatin(sp) it will make you twitch. I found that it was so bad it drove me crazy. I read on line that it could be the statin and so I stopped it (mine was in my hand) and in 24 hours it subsided and then in 48 it was completely gone. So then I took it again to see if it did the same thing and it did. I told the doctor so he changed me to another med but I now think it was the simvistatin not the name brand drug.

Various Possible Medical Causes of Unusual / Abnormal Eyelid Twitching / Eye Blinking - Brief Explanations

Well, in terms of medical explanations, under usual and non-congenital circumstances, the annoying and unusual / abnormal eyelid twitching / eye blinking would normally be caused by the not so serious factors as follows : -

# Stress
# Tiredness
# Eyestrain
# Caffeine
# Alcohol
# Dry eyes
# Nutritional imbalances
# Allergies

Next, under such situations, such annoying symptoms would usually come and go within a very short period of time and certainly the conditions would get better and better from time to time especially when certain related treatments are sought and administered to deal with the symptom.

However, under rare circumstances when the eyelid twitching / eye blinking symptom just get progressively and chronically and seriously unmitigated from bad to worse as well as seem to last permanently even when all sorts of related treatments are adminstered upon such illness to deal with it, such non-stop eye twitching / eye blinking symptom may then simply just manifest as one of the serious neuromuscular / neurological symptoms of :

# Tardive Dyskinesia (rapid involuntary uncontrollable eyelid twitching / eye blinking), which in most cases are caused by the neuromuscular / neurological side effects of certain powerful mind-altering medications and other neurological complications. Whilst the underlying mechanism of such a disease is such that the normal functionings of the neurotransmitters chemical dopamine which co-ordinates the miscellaneous human body movements in this case are disturbed, antagonized and disrupted in this case resulting in one's loss of control of human body movements, and in this case, one's eye / eyelids organ.
