First off -- thanks to Patti for pointing out that my original post was in the wrong area. I guess I need more help than I thought I did. :p

Now, I would like to try using eyelets in my Disney album. Is there a good how to site anyone can suggest? Maybe some tips to pass along? The only thing I know about eyelets right now is that hammering is involved -- noisy.

Thank-you!!

I haven't tried them yet either... but tips I've picked up are to use a wooden cutting board on a hard surface -- like the floor. Hammer on a table doesn't work well because the table gives. You need the cutting board for protection - so not to damage your floor.

It supposedly takes about 5 whacks of the hammer.

I watched Lisa doing it on QVC. It looked easy enough.

You need three tools to do eyelets. The first one punches a hole in the paper. You put it on the paper and whack at it with a hammer until you have an eyelet-sized hole. Then you put in the eyelet and turn over your paper. You take the pointy tool and put it in the middle of the eyelet and whack on that until the back of the eyelet is flat against your paper. Do not buy the overpriced hammer they sell in your LSS. I use a hammer from DH's tool box, or you can go to Lowes and get a cheap one.

They also sell eyelet setter kits in different sizes, but I like working in the standard size. There are so many colors and shapes to choose from, collecting eyelets can be as addicting as collecting paper! Good luck. I hope my directions have been clear. It is kind of hard to learn how to start, but once you learn how to do it, it's fun!

I suggest that if possible go to your LSS and hold a setter and possibly see if you can "practice". I was so afraid to start using eyelets because I didn't know how. It is no so easy. You can punch the hold with the tool or a simple 1/8 inch hole punch (paper shapers has a simple one that doesn't require any banging - LOL). I would practice on some paper scraps and please DO NOT practice on your kitchen table. I've heard many horror stories of eyelets imbedded or small holes in the table. I do use my scrap table, but I use a magazine and a self-healing mat under it. I also use a small cloth when I'm setting the eyelet to protect it when I'm banging the backside. Good luck. Eyelets are so much fun.

I probably would have just started hammering on my scrap table which is really our dining room table. That wouldn't have been pretty.

I saw last week that Michael's had a kit of tools for $29.99 and I wondered if I really needed all the pieces that came with it. And if not, did I really need to pay $5.99 for a small hammer? Now I know!

Thanks so much for the help. I plan to go to one my LSS tomorrow and pick out some eyelets and the tools. I'd go out today but it's only 10 degrees here today. Brrrrr! Too cold for scrapbook supply shopping.

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!

Just a few thoughts about eyelet tools

The advantage of the anywhere hole punch tool they sell for eyelets is that you can punch your hole anywhere on your page. If you want your eyelet dead center of a 12 X 12 piece of cardstock, you can put it there. With a hand held punch or a paper shaper you are limited to how far in on the paper you can punch your hole. I also like the Lucite mat better then the Memory Makers mat. There is too much give in the MM mat. And finally, I have the little hammer they sell for eyelets because it is small and light weight. It takes more whacks because of that but it carries much better in my tote.

Have fun collecting
