Eye stye

I use Stye brand ointment available OTC at your local drug store. You can also use warm compresses multiple times a day. And be sure to wash your hands before touching your face and try to avoid touching that area at all.

According to my grandfather - rub a gold ring on it.

That said, hot compress seems to work best for me. Whether it's just water, or a tea bag, either works.

How long have you had it? If it’s been longer than a week, you need to go to a dr. Especially since you have swelling under your eye. You may need an antibiotic ointment. Warm compresses are the best home remedy.

When my son was young his pediatrician prescribed Vigamox drops. Holy cow that stuff works quick! I’m glad to see the price has come down because back then it was like $150+. Fortunately our insurance covered it. Today it seems the price is much better-

Vigamox (0.5% ophthalmic solution) typically costs between $16.59 and $25.76 for a 3ml bottle at most U.S. pharmacies when using a GoodRx coupon or similar discount programs. Without a coupon, the average retail price is around $78.20.

My sister used to get styes when we were growing up and usually took around 2 weeks to fully go away. The teabag method seemed to work because once she started with that it would get smaller each day. With Vigamox my son’s was gone within 48 hours - and it was a BIG stye!

I went to eye doctors several times during a stye practically begging for help and they would not prescribe eye ointment, drops, or anything else, just said to do the compresses 5x/day, which was messy and useless. (I did have some erythromycin eye ointment on hand, even the one that also has a steroid in it, and used it anyway, and nothing.)

I’d gotten so many styes I wound up self-referring to the Chalazion Clinic at Mass Eye and Ear and only then did I find a solution, thankfully. (Outlined in the thread I linked above). Once I got the Bruder mask and a prescription for Azithromycin drops (warning: not easy to get), things turned around quickly and I haven’t even had another since, and that was two and a half years ago.

It’s frustrating trying to get help with these things. (And I know my way around the medical system very well.)

My eye and how swollen and painful they would typically get. Styes were literally was blocking my vision, even when they went away, the lid swelling remained. (Now back to normal.)

Next time you go in, ask the doctor to check for demodex. If you have even a mild case, Xdemvy might clear things up so that you don't keep getting styes.

Thanks. I explained in the thread I linked above, I was diagnosed by an ophthalmologist at Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary as having blocked ducts in my eyelids which is very common, and why people get styes (especially when you wear masks for a living). The heat turns the hardened gland into liquid and then you massage the whole eyelid in order to clear the ducts.

Hypoclorous Acid spray works wonderfully for blepharitis and styes. Skin Smart is the brand I use.
I don't think Xdemvy is available in Ireland & UK (yet). If hypochlorous acid works for you, that's great. Others use tea tree cleansers. I like EyeEco, but there are other brands as well. Both hypochlorous acid and tea tree oil must be used on a regular basis to keep the mites at bay. Xdemvy essentially eradicates the mites (or at least the overgrowth). It is a miracle drug in the US.

@Pea-n-Me I suggested that you ask your doctor to look for demodex because it is a very common cause of recurrent styes/chalazia (especially in people with rosacea). Your doctor's explanation of what happened and how to treat it is valid. The question is, what caused the ducts to get blocked to begin with? If it is demodex and you can get rid of it, I would request a prescription proactively. Note: You started the other thread in April 2023. Xdemvy was FDA approved in July 2023.

Very true about Demodex. For me, every time I get sick and my immune system is under attack, I get a flare. I just got over the flu and sure enough my eyes were affected. Skin smart cleared it up and tea tree wash on my cheeks cleared the rosacea flare as well. Every time I’m sick the Demodex try to take over.

They can look icky, to protect your job maybe try an eye cover as you take care of it, but cover as little as possible. Drs generally say don't cover eyes but people can't lose hours or a job over it either.

I have seen stuff called Stye all the time in regular grocery store shelves so I might try that as one option

When I was a teen I had to have one lanced. I think the Dr had me use hot boric acid compresses for a while before lancing it but in the end my body just couldn't fight it, it didn't hurt it was numbed and then gone. I think Boric Acid eye wash works for a lot of people as another option. It seems like this is the ingredient in a lot of eye washes.

There is Bio True wipes my current eye Drs have me do now to keep my eyelids happy, I get dry eye and other inflammatory stuff so I need to be careful and this keeps my eyelids healthy, I don't do it all the time but I do it when I remember and that seems to be enough. This could help you not get another one in the future.

I am very familiar with demodex as many years ago my dog had a superinfection in a small area by her mouth after a stressful period and immunity was low. We successfully treated it with ivermectin.

All humans have demodex mites in our eyelids and eyelashes.

Again, appreciate the input but this wasn’t what I had. Mine likely was from working in an ICU during Covid and having to wear masks constantly that caused the oil ducts to dry out and clog.

I’ve bought it and it didn’t do much for me, unfortunately. Maybe a little soothing but didn’t help heal it.

The Bruder mask is the thing that worked best for me.
