Eye Glasses - Costco, Walmart or LensCrafters

I need glasses. I knew it was coming. Where is the best, most economical place to get them. All the options are an hour away, so I am leaning towards Lens Crafters, so I don't have to make a second (well third really) trip. I briefly looked at Costco, after my exam, but didn't really see anything I like but then again with my eye dilated, I couldn't really see anyway. Is the price between Walmart or Costco & Lens Crafters significant?

I haven't needed glasses since I was 8. So this is all new to me.

Thanks for the link. There are some cute glasses on that site. But I'm not sure online will work for me. I need to try the glasses on, I have no clue what type/style I want or that will look good on me.

You can upload a photo of your face and "try on" the frames online....

I have been a LensCrafters customer for many, many years. I have most recently purchased glasses in walmart and costco but I still like LensCrafters. The quality of merchandise and professionalism is unparrelled. Also, LensCrafters also have some bargain priced frames.

P.s. I don't believe in getting my eye exam anyplace that sells glasses.

If it's your first pair of glasses then you definitly want to try them on in reality as the size of the glasses doesn't always translate in the online images onto the face. I love zenni, but I bought a pair without checking the size and when I got them the bridge is only 16mm - I normally wear a 19mm but can go as small as a 18 mm and those 2mm made a huge difference. The pair I got literally hurts my face. I just can't wear them. Because the prescription is right I can't return them.

Don't go to lenscrafters, they are actually the most expensive place to buy glasses, even more expensive than your optometrist's office. I've had success getting reasonably priced glasses at BJ's, DH at Walmart and Sears. For the kids I've also done well at the dr.s office because his kids package was only $10 more than walmart's and I had the convenience of getting the glasses only 5 minutes from home.

If service and quality is more important than cost to you, definitely go with LensCrafters. I was a Lab Manager and Optician for LensCrafters for over 10 years and still have many friends and, funny story, my now BIL, was once my employee when he was in college, and is now a Store General Manager himself!

LensCrafters takes their training and skill of their employees very seriously. We used to have to, and I hear it is still the same, be ABO (American Board of Opticianry) Certified to make and dispense eyeglasses -we had to renew our ABO Certificates every three years with CEC credits - and even the Frame Stylists have had extensive training before going out onto the floor to help you pick out glasses and lenses. They ALWAYS have the backup of the Lab Techs and Opticians when the customer has special vision needs or has questions about lens types/best lens for their needs.

From my experience, no other "eyewear specialist" at Walmart, Costco, Sams, etc has ever been able to answer even one level up from the basic questions I had about lenses or frames. Since money was a concern for me in past years between leaving LensCrafters and recent years, I have tried JC Penny, Walmart, and Target. Because I know the business, I am able to muddle through on my own and get a decent deal and make sure the axis is correct on my lenses or that the Rx is within the correct tolerance, but I will be honest, I wouldn't trust my vision to the expertise and knowledge of store associates who are cross-trained to start checking salad dressing and toilet paper on Lane 6 when it is slow at the "Optical Center" in big box stores.

And nobody that I have ever worked with that came from anywhere else, or left LensCrafters to work elsewhere, has ever had good things to say about their former companies. I actually left there twice (for reasons other than because I was unhappy, including college plans, having a baby, moving, etc) and came back because of the integrity of the company. It's a great place to work and a quality place to purchase eyeglasses. The ONLY caveat is that it is more expensive. However, a little secret is...wait until the end of the month - that is one of their busiest times of the year and they ALWAYS have great sales to pull in business before year-end flex benefits expire!

ETA: Final price will always be up to you...as with any sales pitch, there are very nice, stylish frames on the low end of the $$ spectrum, and regular single-vision plastic lenses without A/R (anti-reflective) is perfectly fine, especially for a first time eyeglass wearer. Lined bifocals are more, and "Progressive" no-line lenses cost the most. They will try to sell you the "thinnest, lightest" Polycarbonate lenses, but they really are not necessary for any Rx less than +/- 3.0 because frames in style these days are small. And unless you have VERY sensitive eyes, glare will not be an issue, especially these days with new computer screen technology if you work on computers - computer screens used to be glass, so there was more glare then. It's a non-issue now.

If you have any other questions, I would be happy to answer them! Good luck!!

The staff at my costco has been there for more than 10 years. No, they do not stick shelves inbetween:sad2:

Got glasses last month, $139 out the door

A perk of your membership fee:thumbsup2

Costco, Hands down. I was able to get Rayban glasses with lenses and anti reflective stuff for a third of the cost of Lens Crafters.
DD needed glasses in September. She is 5. We were able to get her two pairs at costco for less than 1 and they both are guaranteed for two years. ( We got the second pair as a back up just incase)
Great customer service at our club and they know their stuff.

Really??!! Eyerolls in response to an opinion that was given to the OP, and you are a moderator?!!?

"Sticking shelves in between" what, may I ask?

"Big Box" means Walmart and Target. Costco is a club store.

Glad your staff has 10 years. It helps.

As with any business, those "in the know" usually have inside trade information that others do not.

Still doesn't compare to LensCrafters. JMO

I like Costco--seems like the glasses we've gotten from them are a good value (DD22 recently got 2 pair that averaged about $160 each). Certainly not the cheapest out there, but they have nice frames. My Costco has an optical store specific staff, or at least it seems that way as that's the only place I ever see them working. They do have to send out, so there is a week's wait for glasses.

I have gotten my glasses at Costco for about 15 years now.i have been very happy. Have only had one time I was not happy and they redid my glasses free of charge. I wear progressive, get Transision lenses, I also get the light weight lenses. The price cannot be beat. I usually pay around $280 My husband wanted me to look for different frames the last time I got glasses. We went to LensCrafters. They quoted me $580. There was no way I was paying $300 more. I have never had a question that Costco optical employees could not answer.

A friend recommended 'Americas Best' and i used them for both of my kids glasses & have been happy with them. Great deals & nice glasses. For myself I got good ones at the Dr but they make me nervous because I dont want to scratch them so I use the Zenni ones (recommended on here) in the house- they are comfortable but the metal chips so not really good for hard ongoing use but perfect for backup & such

So it sounds like Costco is pretty good & reasonably priced. No way am I willing to pay twice as much, to save $15 in gas. How long does it usually take for Costco to get in the glasses after they are ordered?

What are opinions of glass vs plastic lenses.

I have to wear sunglasses outside, should I get a separate pair of prescription sunglasses? Or are the transition type lenses good for this?

Costco has a very good optical department. I have been using them for over 15 years as 3 people in the family wear glasses. The service and price can not be beat. My ophthalmologist takes care of my eyes and has always been impressed with the quality and price of my glasses. My daughter's presecription had changed twice in a year and they filled the 2nd prescription for free. I had gotten progressive lenses which made me dizzy when I walked and they replaced those lenses for free. (I even received cash back because the progressive were more expensive!) I have been dealing with the same Costco employees because they have been there since I have been there. They have seen my children grow up.They are Professionals.

I did use Lenscrafters once. I only had a few days to get replacement lenses due to a vacation. I was only purchasing lenses and they were double the price of an entire pair of glasses. They were also good and professional but expensive. They also tried to sell me a pair of frames which were so over priced.

I never felt pressured to spend more at Costco.

I find that return time depends upon the year. They usually say 1-2 weeks. I have put in the order on the weekend and had my glasses by FRiday. When schools start, they seem to have more orders so it takes a few more days. But never have I had to wait 2 weeks.

I can only remember everyone having plastic lenses. I don't know if they do glass anymore.

I got my youngest daughter transition lenses. She loves them because she doesn't have to change glasses. She is 12 years old. I have a separate pair of sunglasses. I have had them many years now. The frames are in good shape so when I need new lenses, I just replace the lenses.

Good Luck.

our experience at Costco has been very positive also

I've had 2 experiences with Costco for myself and 3 experiences for my daughter.

Daughter - contacts and glasses - everything just fine.

Doctor at Costco - excellent.

Myself - 1st pair of glasses - loved the style and the prescription was filled without a flaw. Price was below what I had previously paid.

2nd pair of glasses about 12-15 months later - could only find a very basic style as I require a titanium frame. Ordered it anyway. It took over 3 weeks to fill the script. Each time I enquired after the first 10 days, I was told twice that they were having trouble filling the script because the lens kept breaking - I have a very strong prescription and will soon need cataracts done. When the glasses came, they were perfect - only thing I did not like was the plain jane frame, but that was the same problem I had encountered elsewhere - lack of choice in titanium frames.

I've also dealt with lenscrafters, our eyes, pearle vision, Sears optical and various smaller independent dr's offices.

Costco was great and less expensive.

Lenscrafters was great and expensive.

None of them have a great selection of titanium frames.

(I have the reaction to the nickel in the frame where the frame deteriorates and turns green very quickly reacting with my skin.) Most plastic frames are too bulky - the bigger the frame the thicker my lens.)

No matter where I go it costs in excess of $300 because of the lens.

We go to our eye Dr for our exams then come home and order glasses from Zenni. Been very pleased with every pair we have ordered.
