My niece had her eyebrows waxed this weekend and thought the woman had done a great job, really pleased with the shape. However, the redness didn't go away. They my sister realized they had taken off skin and now she has small scabs.

I am worried because I use the same salon (Cost Cutters) just a different person. :scared: Has this happened to anyone else? I am wondering if the wax was too hot, too cold, or an allergic reaction. This has not happened before to her. I really want to go back there... they are reasonable and convenient.

BTW my niece is getting her license Friday, but hopefully makeup will cover it.

It could also be a bacterial reaction or an allergic reaction.

I have not encountered what your niece did. I use the same local salon for the past 8 years or so and they are wonderful. It costs a bit more but I don't care. They do a great job.

Is your niece on any meds? It could also be chemical.

Best bet - have her heal and if she decides to do it again, have her go to a repretable spa or salon and let them know her last reaction. They can adjust the tempature to fit her skin needs.

This happened to a friend of mine. She was allergic to the lotion they used after the waxing. She said she could feel it burning as soon as the lotion was applied. But the wax was fine. They did say that the lotion was different than what they had used before.

It could be an allergic reaction, or sometimes that can happen when they leave the wax on to long. I would go somewhere else, and mention it to them. They'll be sure to get it off quick then.

It sounds like the wax was too hot. Then putting the lotion on probably didnt help. Sometimes when the wax it too hot you dont know until the damage is done. Also if she was using any lotions that are skin renewing that can cause bad reactions. Horror stories of people getting their skin ripped off. YIKES!!

No she is not using any skin renewing lotion, but she is using some prescription acne mediation. I bet that was it.

Most definetly!! I would say its a safe bet for her to stop using it for a while before she plans on getting waxed again. But ask the tech. Those products can do a number on your skin.

Is she using any type of retinol, or acne medication? That will make the skin VERY sensitive, and rip it off.

It's not a bad job, sometimes skin is too sensitive for the wax. Sometimes it depends on the wax used as well.

OUCH! That has happened to me before. It was from the technician reapplying the wax to the same area...even barely overlapping where she has just waxed will cause this and yes it does just appear red at first and then you are later (usually the next day) left with the ugly scab.

Good news - it does go away. What to do in the future...simply tell the tech that she is very sensitive and to be certain NOT to overlap any wax! It happened to me several times before I actually got ugly about it and ask for another tech. Now, no problems.

When DD was taking Accutane for acne, the doctor told her specifically not to wax. Her skin was so fragile it would have ripped right off.

Or she should consider getting her eyebrows threaded.

Simply amazing how they do it!

I agree, I took accutane for three cycles, and definitely could not get waxed. I wasn't even supposed to be out in the sun, I had to wear hats and sunglasses.

Even pre-accutane, when I was on retin-a, and tetracycline, my dermatologist specifcally said no waxing.

Another factor to consider is that you cannot get waxed on the same 24 hour period that you've been tanning, so if she tried to combine the two that could have caused the problem, though most salons disallow this.

This happened to my daughter and we think it was because of her acne medication. My hairdresser was very upset that the technician did this on a teenager without checking about her medication.

My sister has had her eyebrows waxed numerous times in her teenage/adult life with never having a problem.
This past Wednesday she went to the nail salon and they asked if she wanted her eyebrows waxed, she said sure! By that evening her eye area was all puffy, red and starting to break out. By Friday morning her eyes were almost swollen shut. She made a Dr.s appt because she was leaving for a cruise on Sunday.
The Dr. gave her a steriod shot and antibiotics.
Why she had a reaction at this salon and not another one, I have no idea??

Twice- the first time before I was in a wedding and the second for my entire Vegas vacation in 2004. 2 special occasions!! :furious:

Both times they went over the same spot with the wax and peeled my skin off. I had scabs for 5 days. I try to never get my eyebrows waxed too close to a special event.

I've had that happen, it was from the wax being too hot. (using the bottom of the container from what I understand.) I have sensitive skin, and make sure to tell the esthntician (??) that before she starts. I go to a day spa now and that makes a world of difference from cheaper places. I am not red at all when I used to be red all day from cheaper places. It's worth it for the few extra $$.

Im not sure whether to be glad that everybody knows what to look for when getting there brows waxed,(sadly thru bad experiences) or offended that techs are not knowledgeable of their responsiblity.
Question: how many of you that get your brows waxed, does the tech wax above the brow?

I've had this happen...I do my own eyebrows and it was because the wax was too hot.
Lesson learned on that one......

This has happened to me too. I never knew what caused it. It has only happened the one time.

I've had to stop waxing my brows though because I now get a hive like rash for about 3 days after the waxing. Never used to.

Then my DD just went to have hers done. She also broke out in a rash this time. :confused3 Didn't happen to her a few months ago.

I had this happen to me. And believe me it wasn't a 'cheap' place. It was a well-known spa in one of the wealtiest locations in the US.

I thought it was just too hot wax. It hurt for a day or 2 afterwards but healed quickly.
