In our state Medicaid is out of control, it's one of the top expenses. It just keeps going up up and away! I think states should focus more on anti-smoking campaigns.
As overweight people in the USA far outnumber (I was shortly tempted to write 'outweigh'
) the smokers, my guess would be that the cost to your health system caused by them is larger.I once read in an article by a sociologist that every group or society needs an 'enemy', a scapegoat, someone to project its hate onto. As in the USA -as in most Western societies- it is highly un-PC to mistreat the minorities of yesterday it's now the smokers' turn to be society's 'lightning rod' for bad vibes - especially as it perfectly distracts from the bigger health problem: FAT
But you're not alone: The same starts more or less over here in Europe as well. Even though I think it is good to put pressure on the smokers, there should a) be a limit to that pressure and b) there's other groups who could use some pressure too - aforementioned people with a weight issue for example.
