We are sailing on the Wonder out of San Deigo on April 19th. For right now we are still planning on going, but are watching things closely with all that is going on.

My wife brought up a concern today I hadn't thought of. She is fine to keep the cruise booked but is hesitant to send our kids (ages 6 and almost 4) to the kids clubs. Her thoughts on this are we won't be there to help our kids not touch something another kid just handled after digging for gold in their nose, or other kids forgetting to wash hands after using the restroom. (Or let's be honest our own kids doing those things... :crazy2: 🤦‍♂️)

Has anyone sailed recently and know if they are doing anything extra in the kid clubs right now to help keep things clean?

It's our first Disney cruise with kids and we have been hyping our kids up on the club so they will be majorly bummed if they can't go.

try to relax. More people die from the flu. Maybe soon it won’t be the case.Try to enjoy.

I had the same thought and was thinking we may just skip kids club. Mine didn't use it that much last time anyway. I definitely don't want them eating in there!

Definitely NO ONE is allowed in the kid's club without doing the hand wash station.
It is fully automatic, so its a decent hand-wash, not the job your 5 year old does.

While adults aren't allowed to HELP in the bathroom, I'd like to believe they have someone monitoring the sink area.
(I'm not worried about other kids, mine have their own bad habits. How hard is it to flush a toilet, really???)

We are sailing on the same cruise and have a 5 year old that will be in the kids club. Havent seen any new precautions but they make every child wash their hands before entering and leaving. They are like little washing machines for their hands. THey have to put them in and the water swirls around with soap for a certain period of time before they can take their hands out. Thankfully (knock on wood) kids dont seem to be affected much by this virus.

them hand washing things are great. During open house I will wash my hands on the way out also. Not because I thought I needed to wash my hands again just loved them automatic hand washing things.

There is open play time with parents on embarkation day. You may want to spend a couple of hours with them so that they can see and do everything. To be honest, it is not that exciting. It really depends on the kids. Hit with some and a miss with others. If your goal is to spend quality time with the family then plan to minimize use of the club, on our last 7 night cruise, we used it for a couple of hours during our couples spa massage and for Palo dinner date night.

are you worried about coronavirus specifically? COVID19 does not seem to really affect children. Only 2.5% of all cases in China are in kids and only 0.2% have had severe symptoms (vs numbers I've been reading of like 20% severe symptoms in adults.) No kids have died from it anywhere.

If they are going to catch something it will be garden variety crud going around - by april 19th that should be winding down as it is seasonal.

Well cruises have had to deal with illnesses (like norovirus) for decades, so they should have it down.
I would think your kids would be at greater risk at school or daycare.

Agree. We just did our 6th cruise during the winter. My dd always spent a few hours in the club/lab each day on all of our cruises(all 7 nighters). None of us have gotten sick during or after a cruises. One year my dd did get sick about 2 weeks after a cruise when she went back to school.

I think they should have the same hand washers like they have in the clubs outside of Cabanas. Maybe then all people would actually wash their hands before eating!

Thanks everyone. We aren't really nervous, more just curious if they were doing anything extra since kids are generally less hygienic than adults.

No there’s no extra precautions. We can’t keep that close an eye on every kid and catch them picking their noses etc! The Club/Lab are no less sanitary than anywhere else on the ship in regards to coronavirus. There’s no reason for them not to attend programming, or even eat with us since we serve the food and we definitely wash our hands and wear gloves before serving.

They're probably not doing more than usual.

They may be sanitizing in there more than usual.
They use a low concentrate of bleach to sanitize twice a day normally, once there is an outbreak onboard that changes to someone constantly on that duty in each space, however, there is no outbreak onboard so don't count on it

There is always a CM outside the bathrooms, reminding kids to wash, if you hear the flush and they then appear a second later, they get asked to go wash their hands.

There is also a policy that anyone showing symptoms of illness is not allowed in the spaces. Any child that gets sick in the space gets isolated until they get picked up and sent to medical if needed.

So the clubs are usually some of the cleanest spaces onboard...

Now, the handwashing stations. They're great as long as kids keep their hand in for the whole time, however, a lot of kids (and grownups that come in) dont. So maybe always remind your kids, outbreak or no outbreak, to keep their hands in until it stops...

I wouldn't get too much comfort from hand washing--if a sick kid sneezes on a tablet or wipes his nose with his hand and then touches something, it won't matter that he or she washed their hands half an hour ago.

BUT I do believe they are pretty good about keeping kids who are sick out of the club. A coworker of mine was complaining about how her kid wasn't allowed in the club with a fever, and though I kept it myself, I thought, "Good for DCL"

The cast members are really diligent about having the kids wash their hands normally. Without knowing if they have stepped up their cleaning, I have always felt comfortable sending my kids. This particular virus is not hitting the child population as much either.
With that said, I'm a teacher so I know how impossible it is to keep hands from touching their own faces and then touching objects. My personal school has us washing the tables before a new group sits down and are not allowing shared supplies.
If I was in your situation however, I would let them attend. It's the kids' clubs my kids adore. We just booked for a cruise the summer of 2021 and the first thing my daughter made me check is whether she could still go or if she would have to move to the tween club (she's 10 now).
The clubs have open house that first day. You can ask the cast members and watch what their policies and procedures are and go from there depending on your comfort level.

While I think you are trying to give perspective, there is also a need to take reasonable precautions. On average there are 51 deaths due to lightening strikes annually in the U.S., but that doesnt mean you should be walking on the beach during the storm, because the risk is low.

This applies in so many areas of life. Our favorite neonatologist said "you can't keep her in a bubble, just don't do anything stupid." We were discussing winter lockdown with my 28 weeker about to be released from the NICU, but it's fitting in so many other situations.
