Extra Drivers-All Family Members(Long)

OK, I am confused. I thought that family members did NOT pay the extra $5 a day for car rentals. I remember my son and husband being added to the res. at Dollar. We have Silver Dollar Club which allows you to have no added driver fees. I also remember my son and husband not paying with National. We belong to the Emerald Club. Dollar now tells me you can not have the fee waived if you use a discount? I used a discount code each time before. Is this something new? National said only the spouse, not other family members. Anyone know what the truth is? Everytime I ask I get a different answer. We will have 4 drivers in Oct., 2 DSs over 25, DH and me.

Dollar charges everyone in Orlando. Read the MRA, it allows for exceptions to their "plan".
National, according to the EC hotline allows all family members who reside in the same household with the same address on their license to drive at no extra charge.

Thanks for the quick answer. Hope you had a great trip. Was away a few days and didn't see any posts. Oh well, guess this means I will take the cheapest offer since we will be paying for 2 DSs as extra. Same last name, different addresses.

Avis allows spouses to drive at no charge at Orlando International. Not sure about other family members.

Yes, the same rules for underage drivers apply.

I copied this from Avis website. I rented last February at MCCO and asked at the counter about my wife driving and was not charged any additional fee for my wife - although the last paragraph implies that there are some additonal drivers that will cause an additional fee - a spouse isnot one of them.

Additional Drivers

The following individuals, if 25 years of age or older and in possession of a valid driver’s license may drive the car with the renter’s prior permission:
Renter’s employer (while on company business)
Renter’s fellow employee (while on company business)
Renter’s spouse or life partner

The above additional drivers are considered “authorized drivers” and need not be present at the time of rental nor do they need to sign an additional driver form.

Other individuals may be listed as additional driver’s provided they are at least 25 years of age; present a valid driver’s license; present an Avis honored charge card and complete an additional driver form. An additional driver fee may apply for each additional driver.

Forgot to mention that I am not an Avis preferred memeer either and ws not charged extra for my wife to drive. One time last February at Orlando International airport and also in 2001 at Savannah International airport. Each time I was verbally told that there was no extra charge by the agent at the counter.
