? Extra adult room charge for kids

I went through this when my four kids turned 18+. Now they are on their own and pay their own way, so you'll get a break eventually. :-) Disney does keep track of ages in their system, but if you reserve a cabin at Ft. Wilderness or one of the DVC resorts then they don't count the extra adults. We have been DVC members for quite some time so that helped quite a bit.

I will try to update my "mindset". The fact that they are all in school has me struggling more with finances then weather they are called adults or kids. They will always be my kids no matter what their age but at this time I am still supporting them.

I think in parents mind kids at any age are kids. :) My parents always called my brother & myself kids even we were in our 40's lol. I still think of my son who is almost 40 my "baby" or even my kid but I know he is an adult & treat as such. And yes at times we help them out even though they should be helping us out:laughing:

Over 18 aren't "kids" anymore in the real world.
It is unfortunate that you are struggling with the fact that your children are adults, but they are. You need to update your mindset, for many reasons, including those far beyond Disney
Disney does keep track
Good Luck

I thought I read on here once before that the fee is applied because technically, anyone 18 or older can make their own reservation for a room. If more than two adults are in a room, hotels would be losing money if they didn't charge this fee.

Yes, this over 18 fee was one of the reasons that we bought DVC. We were in the college tuition years and the kids still wanted to go to WDW with us.

We wanted to slow down from our usual commando park touring to experience the resort amenities, so DVC made sense for us. Booking a deluxe was not something we would do. We had always stayed at the All-Stars or Carribbean Beach Resorts.

I am going with my three kids all 18 and above really don't want to pay an extra $240 for the eight nights. Has anyone had this issue does Disney give you a break if the adults are your children? Do they keep track of my kids age in the system since we have been there before?
Thanks,
Ellen

In your initial post, you didn't mention which resort you plan on staying at. Unfortunately with the exception of the resorts that were mentioned by PPs, you will pay for any adults 18+yrs in excess of 2 whether you stay onsite or off. This is not a Disney policy, but is common in almost all hotels. And as others have noted, no one cares who is related to whom- what matters is simply the number of adults staying in the room.

At least it's still a lot cheaper than getting a second room.

If you are finding that the extra $240 is too much of a financial strain, and your grown children for some reason cannot contribute to the vacation, then perhaps you should consider downgrading to a mod if you are booked into a deluxe, or to a value if you are currently booked at a mod.

Or, you could consider renting points and staying at DVC...there, the number of points needed to stay (and the price per point you negotiate with the owner you rent from) doesn't vary with the number of people in the villa...plus, you don't pay tax, either; plus, DVC provides free laundry (in the villa except for studios, and studio guests use laundry facilities located near the pools, w/out charge (except for laundry soap if you don't bring your own)...between tax and extra adult surcharges, this might be the way to go...

A DVC studio (OKW, SSR, BLT, AKV, VWL, BCV, BWV) sleeps four (a queen size bed and a pull-out sleeper sofa, except at OKW where it's 2 queen size beds)

A one-bedroom sleeps four, too (but you get a full kitchen, in-villa laundry, and a 'living room' w/a pull-out sleeper sofa along w/a bedroom w/a king sized bed...jacuzzi tub in the bathroom, too!

A two-bedroom sleeps 8

A grand villa sleeps 12

(Some of the resorts also have a sleeper chair which adds one more to their occupancy possibilities)...

Renting has its own "issues," so if you want to explore it I'd recommend hopping on over to the DVC boards and reading some of the MANY threads on the topic over there...there's no "set price" to rent...but the range seems to be $10-$12/point...point "costs" for a villa vary widely, too--but expect a low of 10 points/night for a studio at OKW to a high of 33 points/night for a Magic Kingdom view studio at Bay Lake Towers...

Good luck!

Ellen, consider the source. This same poster PM'd me last week because she was offended that I asked where to find "normal" stuffing. She was very upset by it. :rotfl:

I second that.:rotfl2::rotfl2::lmao::lmao::lmao:

I was surprised when we booked lodging at Yellowstone and had to pay for the extra person for anyone over 12 years old.

This wouldn't apply to all Disney resorts but if you rent points from a DVC member, you don't pay the extra adult fee. If the OP has a party of 5 (or more) then she would either need two rooms at a value or moderate, or a deluxe resort anyway. So why not rent points instead? The could come out to about the same for a DVC 1-bedroom as it would for a deluxe resort room and you would have the added luxury of a full kitchen plus laundry facilities.

I have been trying to rent points seems that week only Saratoga is available and I did not like it there when I stayed. We will not have a car and busses there seemed to take forever . Will be 4 of us Wyndom bonnet creek seems very inexpensive for two bedrooms never stayed off site means no extra hours and the cost of a car. Much more room then a moderate.

Omg, its so fortunate that the OP posted this question so you could help her solve her REAL underlying problem.

The disboards isn't just about trip planning anymore, its about getting to the heart of the issue and updating our mindsets.:rolleyes2

I don't think she has a problem with the kids growing up. Just having to pay that kind of money to share a room with them, just because they are over 18 now.

Unfortunately, that is the way that the system is set up.

The extra adult charge came into play when we did the math on some recent visits which led us to getting two rooms at a value instead of one room at a moderate or higher resort.
