Is Cozumel a good port to explore on our own? Any suggestions on what to see and/or where to eat? Does the ship dock near the center of town or do we need transportation? Thanks!

You dock right in town on DCL at Punta Langosta. We did not want to commit to a formal "beach break" excursion in Cozumel, so we got off the ship and went to Pancho's Backyard for lunch and margaritas. Then we shopped at Cinco Soles and then we went to MEGA and bought at few things we needed (we were on a 15 day cruise). We planned to grab a cab and head to Paradise Beach, but locals get in free on Sunday, so we assumed it would be extra crowded, plus the weather was not that great.

To be honest with you, we have never done a cruise ship offered excursion ever...even in places like Columbia, we hired a private guide and saved a ton of money and got to see way more than if we had just done a ship excursion.

On Cozumel:
DW and I rented a jeep and went out on our own. You can get away to some of the out-of-the-way places and just do what you want. If, you speak Spanish, DW is fluent, it helps as the locals will treat you special and they gave us multiple recommendations/tips/discounts/etc.

We usually visit Paradise Beach on our own when in Cozumel. It is about a 15-20 minute cab ride away.

Cozumel is easy to do on your own. Cab prices and destinations are posted, no haggling with drivers...

We arrived in Cozumel just head of a storm that cancelled most excursions. Consequently, we wandered around town, browsing the shops, enjoying a snack at a sidewalk café, and watching the waves crash again the shore. We enjoyed the day, even though we didn't get in the kayaking and snorkeling we'd originally planned. Ever since, we've enjoyed spending occasional port days wandering around the towns instead of going on an excursion.

we have done both.. but i like just wandering in cozumel. If you have a long stop like we did then rent a cab and go to the beach but I love to haggle os shopping is fun there for me?!!
