Can someone explane how to drive over there, as this is the first time we will have had a car, i know to drive on the right. but whats the weird rules on going through red lights and that? is there anything that i should know.
Also on motorways i seen cars overtaking on either side is there no fastlanes rule like in england?

Cheers

You can turn right on most red lights but not all of them but it will tell you if you can't or a local will be sounding his horn behind you LOL. I4 for instance you can pass on both sides. Its always good to have a good navigator with you they can give you some guidance especially when turning left!!! When you come to a crossroads you go in order you arrive at the junction. The one thing is the road signs are on you before you realise they don't give you much time to turn. Road signs are also over the road you are going over for example coming from sand lake road the sign for I drive will be across i drive and not the road straight on. (I don't think i explained that very well) It is so easy to drive over there when you have got your barings and the controls clear. Where will you be driving from?

Have some change ready for the toll booths, get to know your car before you set off from the airport & know where you are going. It's probably a good idea to get a map before you go so at least you will be familiar with the names of the roads you are looking for.:)

Few pointers....
1) You're not supposed to Undertake....if you are a Highway, the slow lane is the right lane and you overtake on the left. Be careful though as sometimes you might find the right lane branches off as an exit lane that you may not want !!
2) Most Rentals are Automatic-if you've never driven one before then remember that the car still moves if you take your foot off the brake.
3) Once you start driving on a Highway for 1st time, you may find yourself veering towards the left hand side of the lane initially. This is a natural left/right side of road thing so you need to concentrate and get into the middle of the lane.
4) As others have said, familiarise yourself with all the controls before driving off the forecourt. The MOST important 5 mins of your driving holiday will be the 1st 5 mins. If you can get through that, you will be fine.
5) Stick to the speed limits....fines are pretty steep for speeding.
Hope that helps

I enjoy driving in USA, it is easy peazy lemon squeezy, not nearly as scary as the edinburgh by pass every night!:scared1: now that is scary.

We had a car for the 1st time this year and although DH did the driving I was cheif navigator :) my job was to look out for the road signs and speed limits etc as they do tend to be dotted around and the speed limits change quite often. I couldn't work out any pattern as we have in the UK (ie 70 on motorways etc)

We took our Tom Tom with US maps which made things a lot easier but you can never rely on them completely, a lot of common sense is also required as it tried to take us into a restricted area of the Kennedy space center :scared1:

You can usually add sat nav to your car hire for about $11 a day.

The most important thing is know your car before you go anywhere. We have both driven an automatic before so were ok but if you have never driven an automatic you need to be sure that you have the feel for the car before you set of anywhere.

The roads are huge and so we had no problem really with traffic - overtaking etc.

Most junctions you can turn right on a red light (already mentioned) but everything else is pretty easy - same as here but on the other side of the road only with no roundabouts to worry about :thumbsup2

most importantly dont panic. take it easy at your own pace and enjoy :goodvibes
