Explain "Use Year" to me please.

Looking at a SSR resale for 150 pts.

13 points coming on 10/1/08 and 150 points coming on 10/1/09

So those 150 pts coming on 10/09, when would i be able to book a reservation using those?? Does that mean i can't book until 10/09, or i just have to travel after that?? Can i book a reservation for travel 12/09 in January using those points??

Yes, you can book a trip for 12/09 in Janurary 09. You can book before you actually get the points.

You could also borrow the points and travel sooner.

Yes, you can book a trip for 12/09 in Janurary 09. You can book before you actually get the points.

You actually "get the points" ahead of time. Right now my online account on dvcmember.com has points up to the 2011 use year.

What it means is that the current owners already used 137 of the next year points (coming on 10/1/08) to make a reservation. That left 13 points in your Oct 08 (10/1/09 to 9/30/09) Use Year. The next time you will get points on Oct 01, 2009 and if the contract is worth 150 points (that's my guess), you will get all of them.

You can make a reservation during your Oct 08 UY, but you will have to borrow points to make one for more than 13 points. If you borrow the points from Oct 09, the number you will have coming on Oct 1, 2009 will be reduced by the number that you borrow. If you decide to cancel the reservation before you go, you would have to use those points before 10/1/09 or they would expire.

Yes. In fact, you can bank the 13 remaining points in the Oct. 08 UY into 09, so you'll have 163 points available to use.

I've got more complicated details on the DVC page on my website linked below, but I find it helpful to think of each Use Year as a pool of points for a "booking year". From 10/01/08 to 09/30/09 is your booking year. Any reservation for during that year must use the points for that year. Each year you start with a base pool of 150 points.

There are "sub-pools" in each pool as well. The most common is the Banked/Borrowed pool. If you bank or borrow points from one UY to another, they go into the new UY's B/B pool. Points in the B/B pool CANNOT be moved again - you must use them before the end of that UY or you lose them, so be sure to use those points first. You do not normally need to tell Member Services that, but if you bank/borrow points after making a reservation, I believe you have to rebook the reservation in order to use those points first. Or just book another reservation

If you decide to buy this, make sure you get the current owner to pay the dues for whatever remains in 2008 and 9 months in 2009 since you won't have those points to use.
