Explain Transferring Points to Me

Just bought at BWV contract that is pretty stripped for 2016. We have our yearly vacation later in the year of 2016, and rather than renting points to stay, I was thinking about maybe getting some points transferred. Never done this before, so not sure how this works. Have a couple questions:

1. I assume the transferred points only give you 11mos availability to that resort, correct? Meaning, if I get SSR points transferred in, that does not give me my 11mos window at BWV? Likewise, if I get VGF points transferred, that would give me the 11mos window there.

2. Is it better to transfer these points in, or rent? I figured transfer since I can control the reservation

3. I don't want to really start borrowing points already, so is this (transferring) the smart thing to do?

4. How does the transfer work, and how long does it take to show up on your account?

Any other advice is appreciated!!

Adding to the info in the link, as to renting or transferring: finding someone to rent a reservation from is usually easier to find than a transferor who will transfer the number of points you actually need. When you rent, the owner makes a reservation in your name (which can be linked to another reservation you make with your own points for other days of the same trip). The one who is renting to you can rent multiple times (up to 20) in a year and face no issues with Disney. A member can transfer points in or out (but not both) only once per use year, thus making renting the preferred option for many owners who do rent.

Transferred points retain their home resort and use year. Unless you have a contract that matches exactly, they will not show up for online booking, so you'll have to call to use them. This can put you at a disadvantage, since online opens up an hour before the phones.

Only one transfer is allowed per membership per use year; either in our out, not both. This makes some people less inclined to transfer their points. I expect transfers to go at a premium.

Also, your contract with Disney specifically prohibits compensation for transfers. Transfers are immediate, and Disney will not intervene if something goes wrong with payment.

Yes, but I'm hearing I can transfer points for $15/PP--which will allow me control of the reservation. I think David's is around that PP cost--and there is a fee for priority booking at certain resorts (which will be our resort choice and our time of vacationing too).

IMO DVC doesn't like transferred points but they allow them. Your account won't keep track of them, you can't use them online and MS often has trouble using them. We transferred once and MS had delays making our reservation and at one point told us that we didn't have any transferred points and we had transferred the points from one of our contracts to the other so we knew that they were there somewhere.

We no longer transfer, you might have better luck.

David's is a rental broker. The terms you are seeing on his site relate to rentals where the owner makes a reservation in your name. That is also true of other sites you may find where an organization is offering DVC vacations for rent. You may be able to find someone who can transfer points to you for the resort you want but then the issue becomes how many points since the transferor usually has one set of points that he needs to transfer and must transfer all of them because of the single transfer rule. Thus, for example, if you need 30 points and find someone who has 50 to transfer, that person is usually not going to transfer just 30. It is just usually easier to find a rental where the owner makes a reservaiton in your name, including because there are brokers offerring their services to act as the middleman for those looking to rent. Also, if you actually need to make the reservaiton at 11 months out right near 8 a.m. on line, you cannot do that with transferred points. You need to call MS at 9 or after to use transferred points.

Exactly.

They might not mind the fact of transferred points (after all, if they did, they wouldn't allow it), but they don't allow money to change hands.

I'd rent, but actually I'd just borrow. You own those points, why pay MORE for something you can use for "free" now? We started out with a bang, borrowing like crazy. That went on for a few years, then there was just a natural lull in what we wanted to do, and in Feb we'll be just about current. We have not been harmed by starting off by borrowing. So I'd just borrow. Use your points, not someone else's, until you don't have points to use. That's my opinion. :)

I would borrow points. Put off the renting until you really need to. Life's short, eat dessert first...
