From what I understand, the lower you go in the ship, the less motion you feel. I am sure there is a simple answer related to science, but being a science challenged person, I am having a hard time with this.

Seems to me the further away from the water you are, the less motion you feel? Please explain to me

Thanks!!

It is kind of like being in a highrise when the wind blows. The upper floors will feel the motion while the lower floors don't move.

The upper floors of the ship have a higher center of gravity so you feel the side to side motion more than the lower floors.

Hope that helps :yo-yo:

Mom showed me the "physics" by holding a pencil at the bottom, and then moving the eraser in an arc, back and forth. The closer to the source of the movement, the less you feel it...

Her other recommendation was a window...seasickness is caused when your eyes see one thing (ie. a non-moving wall) and your inner ear feels one thing. She said that by looking out the window and staring at the horizon, your mind and inner ear mesh and that helps too.

:)

I am probably dating myself, but when I was a child, amusement park rides on big trucks would visit the neighborhood about once a week in the summer and for like fifty cents you could ride. One of them was the big ship shaped rocking ride thingie. (Most theme parks have some sort of pirate theme one now). It was a hollowed out boat that had rows of benches in it. For the best ride, you had to sit all the way up and as far to the points (away from the middle) as you could. All the younger kids had to sit in the middle bottom row, and they hardly felt the ride at all. Same thing with a ship. The higher and more towards the points you are, the more you feel the motion. That said, if you are prone to motion sickness, no matter where you are, odds are good you will get sick.

Wow!!! Not only do we have fun people on these boards, but we have smart people too!!!

Thanks!!!

It's funny that when a know it all hubby (me) tells his DW something, she knows that the facts will come out on the disboards. Good thing i was right :)
