We haven't been there in 2 years (I know - shame on us!). Previously the restaurant was in the back of the Mexican pavilion near the water. Now I am reading that you can get views of Illuminations from tables in the new Mexican restaurant.

How are they doing this? Did they gut the entire pavilion & move it up front where the display cases are? Or did they add something on or put it upstairs? Just wondering if this might be a better alternative for supper than the outside CS if we could get an ADR.

The original restaurant (San Angel Inn) is still there, untouched. The new restaurant is outside of that pyramid pavillion, across the walkway (on the lake). They built on the original counter service restaurant. The new restaurant is called La Hacienda de San Angel. We ate there in October, and LOOOOOVED it. The views are beautiful, and the food was the best we had all week. I would definitely recommend it!

Like the OP stated, it's 2 totally sepaprate restaurants. Mexico now has 2 TS (the original San Angel & the new La Hacienda) and 1 CS. La Hacienda is both CS & TS in the location of the old CS only place on the water.

OK - thank you for the explanation. As long as I can still get CS there, I should be fine - last time we managed to snag a table late & just eat & watch at the same time. I will say we had to get a table & then send someone to get in line for food as so many people were just sitting at the tables not even eating - just waiting for illuminations.

Hacienda did not replace the San Angel Inn. Totally different restaurants. La Hacienda is not inside the pyramid pavilion.

La Hacienda is both CS & TS

Not exactly. La Hacienda is TS and only open for dinner. La Cantina is CS and open for lunch and dinner. During lunch hours guests purchasing food from La Cantina may sit inside La Hacienda. At dinner La Hacienda serves TS meals and La Cantina continues to serve CS meals. At dinner, there is no indoor seating for CS and no outdoor seating for TS. They are two entirely separate restaurants that are located in the same area.
