Hey guys - what is the deal with the 'Sword in the Stone' - in front of the carousel?

We've been to Disney World countless times - but have never really taken notice of this until the last time when went and saw some kids trying to take the sword out of the stone...

thanks,
jen

At one time, at least in DL, there was a small show that would go on where Merlin would pick a child out of the audience and, after much pomp and circumstance, the child is able to pull it from the stone. I think they quit doing this, at least in DL.

I would assume that you know this references the Disney animated film "The Sword and the Stone." I also think they used to have some daily event with it, but really haven't seen it in years. We do see people using it for a Photo Op by having their kids try to remove the sword.

They did this at WDW too, and dc'd it awhile ago

thought it still went on at DLR. it definitely ended at WDW a long time before it did at DLR if it ended there.

the sword is still capable of being pulled out by those destined to do so.

My husband and I took some time on our March trip to just watch the "action" at the sword and the stone. Many took photos, some tried to remove the sword from the stone. And as bradk mentioned, a few destined souls were able to pull the sword out a bit. :goodvibes

The DL show indeed went on much longer than the WDW one, but it too has been discontinued (at least for now) since sometime last year. Budget cuts and all that. :sad1:

It would be nice if they moved it into the new fantasyland area being built - to kind of balance all the princessy castley stuff.

DS was chosen out of crowd by Merlin in 2006 (near end of the show's scheduled run) during our first famiy trip. He was shocked to succeed in pulling it out and was made temporary ruler of the realm complete with king's crown, cape & medal of honor. Priceless!

My kids tried to pull the sword out everyday we visited MK in 2008. Of course on the last day my eldest was once again in a mood. While younger DS rode Peter Pan older DS begged me to take him to the sword. And yes, you guessed it he pulled out the sword. He gloated to his brother once he got off the ride. Younger DS asked if he could go over and try but he knew the chances that he too could pull it out were going to be slim. Well, not only did he pull it out but a Dream Maker was there and made him Prince for the Day. He received a patch, a sword and a certificate. All day long the CMs greeting him as Prince Andrew. It made his week and older DS was not happy. But DH and I secretly told ourselves that what goes around comes around. Finally after a week the younger brother wins a break.

Yes they can...I got lucky enough to pull the sword from the stone on a trip... My sister got a picture of my face and I'm in shock at it.... To bad she has the photo and I don't. I was a bit shocked that a thirty something man would be able to pull it out of the stone. Even better since my brother-in-law couldn't a few seconds before :rotfl:

My dd (3 at the time...in 2008) was able to pull the sword out of the stone. She tried it once, and then a CM came out of no where and told her to try it again. She went up and tried it again, and low and behold it came out. She thought it was the coolest thing! Then the CM gave her some magic pixie dust, told her to count backwords from 10 and throw the pixie dust up in the air to make the sword go back down. She did and it went down. She got a certificate and was named honorary princess of the day. It was super cute. Then she wanted me and dh to try, which we couldn't. She still reminds us that she is stronger than us. :rotfl:

My DS just pulled it out of the stone at MK yesterday! He was ecstatic, and the boy who before "hated" the movie has now requested to watch "The Sword in the Stone" on our long trip back home. And he's already throwing around his royalty, trying to tell us how to behave around him! :rotfl::wizard:
