Expiring banked points during trip

Hoping someone can answer a few questions for me...

My in-laws had to cancel a planned trip for this year and in turn had to bank around 290ish points for next year, leaving them with around 720 points for 2012-January 31st 2013. We are planning a trip for January 2013 and plan on doing a 2BR at BCV. We have always taken our trip during the last few weeks of January (ex. this year we did January 17th-29th).

Problem is, next year MLK Jr. is a bit later, falling on the 21st, and this is a weekend we prefer to avoid. So our best option is to do the 24th-February 3rd. However, the 290 banked points will expire after January 31st. So this leads me to two questions...

The first 7 days of our trip (24th-31st) in a 2BR would easily use up the 290 points, then we would use UY points for the remainder of our trip into February. Can we book this trip and have that work out, or do we have to be completely done with traveling before the 31st?

IF the above doesn't work, could we book 2 separate reservations, doing January 24th-31st, then book another one for the 1st-3rd? Would MS allow this, even in the same resort, if we are willing to move rooms if necessary?

Any advice or answers would be great help! Thanks. :)

I believe you will be making 1 reservation but you must use the correct use years for each reservation- I am guessing your in-laws have a Feb use year. That means for your trip in Jan 2013 you will need to use 2012 points while days in Feb you will have to use 2013 points.

If you are staying in the same size room for both reservations you will not have to move.

Right, but we are allowed to split the reservation, right? And we would be staying in the same room type..

Side note: I live in Seattle now but grew up on th South Shore in MA... Abington actually, and my Mom just moved back to Weymouth last month (we lived there as well when I was in high school).. Small world! :goodvibes

For the January 2013 dates, you can use current points from your 2012 Use Year (no need to bank those) and any points banked from your 2011 Use Year. For the February nights, you can use points banked from the 2012 Use Year, current points from the 2013 Use Year and points borrowed from your 2014 Use Year.

There is no need to split the reservation. You can reserve it using the banked points for as many days as you can up thru January 31 and then use points from the following Use Year for the nights beginning on February 1. There is no advantage to two reservations unless you are changing resorts, views or room types.

Enjoy! :)

When MS books your trip, they should simply use the points that are eligible for each of the days of your trip.

However, I would just remind them that you want them to use up as many banked points as possible for the days prior to the start of the 2013 UY. It sounds like you won't have a problem using up all the banked 2011 UY points, so it should not be an issue. They should do it correctly, but it never hurts to remind them of exactly what you want them to do.

Once the reservation is made, be sure that you double check the account to be sure they were allocated correctly.

If you are asking about splitting the reservation for dining plan purposes (not sure why else you would want a split reservation) then the answer would be no- you are not allowed to keep the same view/room type and have 2 different reservations- they will automatically put it all together. They stopped allowing the dining plan splits last fall.
