Expired nexus and late renewal?

Hi everyone.

My sister's NEXUS expired in August and she forgot to renew. Can she renew after it's expired? If she renews/reapplied, can she keep using the card while she waits for a new one? At least for things like faster security?

I know my renewal took almost a year. But I renewed before expiry.

Everything I have read seems to indicate the grace period only applies if you submitted the renewal before the expiry date.

How do I renew my Trusted Traveler (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI or FAST) membership?

You become eligible to renew your membership 1 year prior to program expiration. If you submit a renewal application before your membership expires, you will be able to continue to use benefits after your membership expiration date.

I agree with CanucksRock on the above, but if you read the extremely long Flyertalk thread on "Nexus Renewal Information and Processing Timelines" (don't know if we're supposed to link out to other forums), I'm sure I saw a few people who applied after expiry. I think it is worth a try, and then monitoring her account.
I applied for my second renewal in Sept. (due to expire just prior to our January trip and I was afraid of getting turned down for short security lines - I'm not sure airport staff will all accept the grace period) and was approved without an interview in late November, and got my card in early December.

Thanks. I renewed for my family about a year ago. My husband was approved just a few weeks ago and just got his new card. I was approved 2 weeks ago and am waiting for my card. My kids are still supposed to have interviews. But we renewed before expiry.

My sister applied yesterday. She was able to use the renewal link but it says pending review. So we will see!

I renewed in 2020, it took over 6 months. Wife in early-2021, got the new card at beginning of 2022. Kid in early-2021, still pending review status over 18 months later. Expired cards with renewal pending are now up to 5 years validity past expiry. Just wow.

I agree. The timelines are crazy. Nothing for my kids either. They probably need new pictures.

Check the website again. My husbands was pending for review over 8 months when they changed the status and just mailed him his card. This happened late November and he received the card last week. Apparently they are so far behind that they are re reviewing applications.

Sadly my son needs his photo updated, which means in person required. Adult renewals are doing ok
