I'm no expert or rule-guru on all things Disney....but, this is how it was explained to me. I don't remember where I read this....so, this is just hearsay at best.
A limited amount of Fastpasses are distributed each day. You can (according to some) use the Fastpass after the allotted time on the ticket ON THAT SAME DAY.....but, not before the start time.
It works this way....let's say Space Mountain averages 10,000 riders per day. WDW decides to distribute 1,000 Fastpasses for that day. So....9,000 riders will go thru the stand-by line. If I miss my Fastpass window....then, some lucky person that happened to be in the stand-by line during my Fastpass window was able to get on the ride a few seconds earlier. Then, if I return a little later....some unlucky person in the stand-by line had to wait a few moments longer because I was late.
As long as Fastpasses are not accepted from a different date....there will definitely be 9,000 stand-by guests that ride and 1,000 Fastpass riders on that day. The only number that might change is that some of the Fastpass riders will not use their pass and open up more spots for stand-by riders.
Even if all 1,000 riders decided to wait until 1 hour before closing to all ride at once....there will only be 1,000 Fastpass riders. In this scenario, the stand-by line would move freely all day long until 1 hour before closing when all the Fastpass riders would show up.
That's why I can see how Disney would allow people to show up late for Fastpasses. You are not cheating anyone out of a ride. There will be the same number of riders on that day whether you show up on time or not.
Now....accepting passes from another day would throw the whole system off....
My fix? Well...it would require too much of an upgrade.....but, it would be awesome.....
When you put your park ticket into the Fastpass machine....you are given times from the earliest available all the way until the park closes. You pick your time. Each time slot has an alotted amount of Fastpasses and will sell out when all the passes are gone. That way....I can get a Fastpass at 1pm before leaving the park for my afternoon nap...pick 7pm as my time....and come back to ride Space Mountain at 7pm (which is what I do now anyway).
Yes...I realize this doesn't "make more money" for Disney because I am leaving the park and sleeping in my Disney hotel room....but, I'm looking at it from a customer's point of view. Disney probably has a different point of view
I'm in the same boat with the others that stated. I will not use a Fastpass on a different day....but, I will use a Fastpass later ON THE SAME DAY if they allow it. If they don't allow it, I won't fuss, fight, throw a tantrum, or try to sue Disney.....it will just mean a little extra walking to go all the way across the park and catch my Fastpass window.
Now...if they start charging for Fastpass....I won't visit Disney as often. I don't like the whole "I'm richer than you and can afford it....so, I should be in the front of the line while you are in the back waiting for 2 hours for a ride." That's why I stay away from Universal....

We always ride all the rides we want first thing in the morning and get FP at ever availble time, that way we can ride again before we leave, or later when we come back. We are always prepared to take our late FP and crawl away with our tail between our legs if turned away, and we would never return late for Soarin'.
. I certainly wouldn't have the expectation that it would be acceptable or done all the time. Nor would I feel like I was entitled to use any FP I had any time I wanted.
troll here folks.
