I am leaving next Thursday night. It is just me and my 6 yr. old ds. We are driving down with friends. My dh is paying our half of the condo, and my friends said I can pay them my share of the gas/tolls after we get back. I have 4 day PHP for both of us, 3 Q & C's, and 1 KLV for the RFC. I have a RFC $25 gc for ds to use in the gift shop for souveniers, and $5 in Burger King gc's for the ride down(not much, but it will help) I have also printed out some B1G1 free coupons for the local McDonald's. We are staying offsite in a condo, I will pack a grocery bag and take as much non-perishable food that I have stocked up on. I will be using a Brita water bottle.
All I have is about $600 to bring with us. We are staying for 7 days. I have to budget tickets for Universal Studios for the 2 of us, plus around $60 for our hotel room for one night on the trip home. Other than what I have planned on, any other suggestions? We will be eating at Sizzler one night, plus use our vouchers, other than that, we will be eating at the condo.
How would you work out your budget??
Thank you!

I'm not saying it can't be done, but over 30 people have already looked at your post and not answered. It is going to be hard to stay in your budget.

If you have $600, minus $60 for room and say $30 for your Sizzler meal, then you are already at $510. Buying your Universal tickets at the park is also not the smartest thing...they run $48/child and $58 adult (maybe you can find a discount.) So...if your tickets run you $106---your money is now at $404. That is not much for 7 days even with the vouchers you have.

You said you were taking a grocery bag---what exactly does this mean? Is this for all your meals in the condo? If so, then I would imagine that you have quite a bit of money---but, if you are planning to use the $404 to buy your groceries, then you may need to really check out the menus before you leave and make sure you get a good value so you can stretch your money.

I would put my spending money in 7 envelopes marking expected expenses for the day. Budget out each day separately and you'll be ok.

I wold recommend you bring lots of juice drinks or pop from home, too. You are going to get tired of water. Bring our own bev. will save a big chunk of money. Carry a couple into the parks with you each days will help the budget. Bring a small cooler for the car ride.

Also, do you have a triple AAA card to use at Universal Studios? just about all food and merch are l0% off with card. Slight discount on tixkets with it too. Go to the Universal Discount Board and look at the menus at Universal. Actually, food (like burgers, fires) are a bit cheaper there htan at disney parks.

Have fun,

herc.

OK, I am really stressing now more than ever, LOL. My friend sort of talked me into going on this trip with her, her dh, and two dd's. I didn't have much time to get money together. I was hoping to go with $1000 cash, but I suddenly lost my job and was not able to get anymore together.
Just to clarify, yes, I already have groceries packed to take with me. I have fruit snacks, pretzels, pop tarts, cold cereal, pancake mix and syrup, coffee, tea bags, sugar, tuna, plastic jarred fruit, Capri Suns, bottled water, and individual packets of salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup and mayo that I have been saving from fast food trips(the leftovers, I don't intentionally take more than I need) I figured for ds and I, I wouldn't have to spend more than $50 for the week in additional groceries. Is this unreasonable? We are going to be spending 3 days in the parks, I got one voucher for each day. We will go to one water park, and have 3 days or so "off". We will be eating breakfast at the condo, pack some light snacks, and eat a late lunch/early dinner with our vouchers. My friend has coupons for "kids eat free" for Sizzler, but I didn't plan on spending $30 there. Ds and I would be just as happy with hot dogs at the condo, so I could cut that out. Also, my friend has gotten her Universal tickets by agreeing to do a time share spiel, she said sometimes they offer discount tickets to Universal, which she would get and I would just pay her for them, although I know I cannot count on that. If worse came to worse, ds and I could just spend that day at the condo pool, we don't have to do everything with my friends. Our remaining dinners at the condo will be cheap, spaghetti and jarred sauce, etc. I really was only planning on budgeting for a few snacks each day at the parks, and a cheap lunch at whatever water park we go to....my friend knows my money situation and assured me $600 for the two of us will be fine...but I am worried now...
Thanks for your responses, I will just have to be VERY careful of what I spend...

I'm no expert by any means, but I see a couple of things...

1. You have 4 day PHP, but are only going 3 days? Are you saving a day for a reason? I'd use the fourth day, and skip Universal this trip. I ADORE UO, and won't go to Orlando without including it in our trip, but with your budget and time limitations, you'd have to pay virtually full price for a one-day ticket instead of using a pre-paid Disney day. Save UO for a few years when DS is older and you can experience the entire resort with the 5-day $90 ticket!

2. I'd Priceline the hotel for the return trip. See how well you do on the way down, and while driving determine where to stay going home. You have a week to call DH at home and have him Priceline a hotel in that area. That will cut your price way below the $60 off-the-street rate.

3. Additional cheap condo meals that you can bring from home and would work for two people: Tuna helper, mac and cheese w/ broccoli added, those all-inclusive chicken meals in a box, Chun King chicken chow mein.

4. Lunchables will be great for park days. Bring one each for you and DS, and one nachos one to pick on in addition to lunch.

5. I'm an envelope person! Separate your days and using your schedules and vouchers, split the cash up!

HTH! I think you can do it, but by the drive home you may be eating those ketchup packets for a snack!!!! LOL!!!

One more thing.....if you get sick of water, bring packets of Kool-Aid that already have sugar to mix in your water, or instant tea, or whatever. Also, they sell meal vouchers at AK for a counter service lunch. You get the lunch, plus 2 extra vouchers to use later in the day. One of them is for a snack (either popcorn or an ice cream bar) and the other is for a drink (either bottled water or a soda). They're very reasonable, only about $14.00 (I think, check allearsnet.com to make sure). If you're going to that park the 2 of you could easily split those.

I say you should/could do a timeshare tour or 2 yourself and get the Universal tickets free. Or take cash for the tour if you decide to skip Universal. ;)

Since you are going with friends, your transportation may be restricted. If I were in your shoes, I would plan on going where my friends went, and simply budget for the one day at Universal Studios. I may be in the minority, but I think $600 is enough. I have taken 4 kids to Disney(in a studio plus at the BWV) for 5 days with $1000, and brought home half of that. We had AP's, a few Q&C vouchers, a few VKL vouchers(we used at Rainforest Cafe), and I packed enough breakfast food for each morning, and a few quick items for dinners in the room(basically a box of easy mac, sandwich bread/pitas, deli meats and cheese), and a few snack-type items. We drove, and had enough room to pack lots of bottled water and soda, but you could easily purchase these items once you arrive for about the same price as home. I went to the Winn-Dixie near Disney and picked up fresh fruit, milk, and juice(I spent @$20), and picked up a pizza at the Pizza Hut nearby for our first-night dinner($20), and a big salad from Olive Garden($14---and it lasted through 2 meals). We made lunch our big meal some days: we ate at Tony's in MK, Teppanyaki in Epcot, and had dinner at Rose and Crown in Epcot one evening, so I would not say we ate at budget restaurants. We took advantage of the meal certificates at AK($12 each for me and oldest DD, and $6 each for the 3 younger kids): for @$50 we had lunch, a drink, and a snack later. For you, it would be less than $20. We packed a small, collapsible rolling cooler for the waterpark with sandwich fixings, fruit, and water bottles/sodas. When we left Blizzard Beach, we went to Rainforest Cafe for an early dinner(4-ish)using one adult and 2 children's VKL vouchers, but we could have easily gone to Peppermarket Grill and used our Q&C vouchers instead. We used our Q&C vouchers at Tangerine Cafe for lunch and Beaches and Cream for dinner: I used 2 vouchers for 3 of us at Tangierine Cafe, and added 2 kids meals(hamburgers--$3.50 each w/drink), and I used 3 vouchers at Beaches and Cream and added a bowl of chili and a coke, and we waddled out! We had Mickey ice cream bars a few times, but we always took our own water bottles into the parks(except for AK). The kids had their own Disney Dollars for souvenirs they earned before we left... I suggest you do this for your son for 2 reasons; kids tend to spend more carefully when it is their own money, and it keeps you from spending your limited money. We allow our kids to spend their money on anything they want while at WDW, but when the money is gone, they get no more(and I am much better about doing this than my husband). Our single biggest expense was gas($115...we own a gas-hog), the meals without vouchers totaled less than $250, and the groceries for the room and a few incidentals(mainly Mickey ice cream bars)was another $50, plus pizza and salad the first night($34). We ate a fast-food lunch on the way down($30), and Cracker Barrel on the way home($40). Our room(DVC), like yours, was "paid for" before we left, we had tickets like you, and a few meal vouchers like you. Even factoring in the day at Universal($90-100 total) and the $60 room, I think you will be fine with the remaining $450, considering you will have a kitchen. All I had was the "kitchenette", and we managed to have breakfast in the room each day.

Based on an earlier post I'd say $400 for 7 days is enough. The key is to make sure your meals are big ones. Have a robust breakfast even if you don't want it. Same for lunch. Light snacks won't really cut it, park days can be long...I would plan to buy one lunch and split it...not necessarily what you want but anything that comes in big portions like a chicken salad or burger and fries. I found it was cheaper to eat well.

You didn't say where you were staying. There is public transportation in some areas so the two of you could choose to catch the bus to Disney instead of going to Universal and buying more tickets. Also some timeshares have timed group taxi service available to either set of parks. This would probably be cheaper than buying two Universal tickets. I did this once from Westgate Lakes to Universal. Going the other way to Disney was slightly more expensive. If your friends are flexible maybe they would be willing to drop you off at DTD in the morning or pick you up in the evening...especially if they have to drive by it on their way to Universal. Then catch a taxi or public transportation the cother way. But its important to figure out how public trans will work before you leave...and if they are picking you up it would be best if you both had working cell phones.

I think the envelope idea is great.

Sizzler should not cost that 30 dollars to begin with. I would say more like 20 dollars or less and with a kids eat free coupon. I would stop the Florida Tourist Place and pick up all kinds of coupons food places.

I know the Sizzler have a all eat breakfeast buffet for 3.99 that's cheap.

I don't eat alot in theme parks I usally do breakfeast and dinner.

To save money eat meals offsite as much as possible that will dave big dollars alone.

Bring lunch into the parks with you save money. Do chicken saland and crackers in a can and do not have be in the fridge. Bring a can drink in with you to drink. Do lunch for less then 2.00 a day. These comes in different varity to.

You can find 5 dollars off coupons US in the tourist books that they have out to save on tickets.

I like the envelope idea...that will help me with my budgeting issues for sure. I will be putting up my budget here for approval by you guys sonn. We weren't able to do UO just for the same reasons but we did have the 4-Day hopper tickets. My situation is a little complicated too but when I get it half together on paper I'll pass by you guys for your expert advice.

You can do it...I like Casey's for a Light dinner...I split a Lg Hot Dog and fries with my boys, and watched Wishes it was the best $8 meal the 3 of us had. Get a guide book from the Librabry, and pour over it on the drive down...there are many hints in there. Most people budget $1000 for a week for 4 people (w/o vouchers) as MIS pointed out and you will do fine. Bring the Snacks, PB/J, water bottle and a few meals quick meals as a backup. But it sounds like your friend knows the circumstances and might work with you. Having fun is FREE!! Also many BK will take the Mc D's coupons. Let us know how you made out!!!
